  1. I finally read the book on Friday and loved it. The show is different, but I still like it. And I love Wendy. So glad she's sticking around.

Jason George is in everything lately. I love it.

And since when can you say "shit" on Lifetime? LOL, that's awesome.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

  2. I think I've found my new obsession lol

  3. That was actually surprisingly good!

I already love the sisterly dynamic between Ingrid and Freya (Ingrid is my favorite and hilarious). I can't wait to see more of that and for them to finally realize they can do magic and use it.

Overall, it has a few flaws but I'm sure it will even out in the weeks to come. I'll definitely keep coming back.

I had very low hopes for this show because I hate this series of books (I do love the author's Blue Bloods series, but this one isn't good. It's a poor spinoff of Blue Bloods). Anyways the show is about a thousand times better than the books. I'm so pleased so far

  5. a lot of potential. I really like the characters...except Dash's brother. Not a very interesting guy whose name I completely missed. Loved the cat. Hope this wasn't her 9th death. (the hitting the cat with the car scene was a highlight. What a curse! Your child dies and you're immediately ready to give birth again? Yeep I am hooked.

  6. Really liked it. Well, as much as you can like anything when you're sitting next to someone who broke up with you less than a day before. Definitely gonna rewatch it again today. I liked the cast. Ingrid is nothing like in the book aside from the skepticism but I loved her, she made me laugh out loud once or twice.

  10. It was a good pilot, a tad too melodramatic at times though. I like the cast and Jason George seems to be in everything I watch. Most characters were very enjoyable, especially Wendy and Ingrid. Not a fan of the Freya/Dash/Killian love triangle.

  11. It sounds like a new version of Charmed ( how can not make a distinction ?) but the pilot was pretty good ! I'll keep watching.

  13. If just the house doesn't have the same color as in Charmed, everything else is super!

  14. The back story to the main characters, and hint of back story to some of the peripheral ones (i.e., Killian, and the ex-boyfriend from the painting), is the most intriguing and well thought out part of the show for me. I got a kick out of seeing Jason George on this show. The show had quite few things that surprised me. There was a lot of skin (i.e., almost nudity) being shown, and some of the language was also a surprise for me, and the scary factor from the black magic was much less PG than what I saw on Charmed. I don't remember Army Wives being so risque. Anywho, I was okay with that aspect of the show too. I found the pilot an entertaining episode, with some flaws, which I hope will be fixed in later episodes.

Some things I didn't like and hope they change:
    - Julia Ormond's accent. She sounds nasal when trying to force that American accent. I think her French accent is quite nice, and would prefer hearing her speak American English with a French accent, than a nasal American English. Her onscreen sister, Wendy, could do a quick throwaway line to Joanna about how Joanna should speak in her normal accent instead of this made up one.
    - White flower turning red - Did Ingrid really not notice that her sister's white flower totally changed into a different flower that's red? My sister and I laughed about it during the commercial break because we would totally notice that in the same situation. It makes Ingrid seem oblivious or stupid. Don't get me started on those two not noticing the flowers that caught fire.

    - Alternative option to IVF is witchcraft? - When did witchcraft become a viable alternative option after IVF fails? Normal people would've thought of surrogacy, or even adoption. I just thought that was weird. Another weird thing? Leaving that witchcraft star on the library floor. I mean, if I was a regular patron, I'd be like "Um, I'm not coming back to this library again".

I'm probably being too hard on the show. It's just the pilot, so I'm holding out hope that some of these plot holes could be explained later somehow, or at least tighten up the show's writing and directing more. I'll probably come back to see the second episode, because the story and premise is interesting to me.

  15. Nice review, playdoc. Why not repost it somewhere like IMDb or Television Without Pity where people actually read and comment? SpoilerTV is great for spoilers, but not exactly conducive to extensive discussion

  16. Thanks for reading and for your suggestion. I mostly visit SpoilerTV only, and rarely visit a couple other sites for spoilers. I don't really need to post my comments everywhere or need an extensive discussion. I just wanted to share my thoughts here, and if someone reads it and wants to discuss, I'm game. So, thanks again for reading! :)

  18. Ok, in that case I'll respond here. Overall I enjoyed the pilot, but couldn't look past some cringeworthy moments which stemmed from both the acting and the story itself. I just barely tolerated the over the top sexualized nonsense between Freya and Killian. They established Freya and Dash haven't known each other long, but I really can't root for infidelity in a relationship. Plus, who cares. If I wanted cheesy melodrama I'd watch a soap or read a drugstore novel. I'm only tuning in for the badass witchery. Couldn't give a **** about the hackneyed love triangle.

Regarding the whole fertility storyline...it appears the writers were looking for a way to introduce Ingrid to witchcraft. I think it's a bit too on the nose that she did her dissertation on post-colonial witchcraft and whatnot, but being the skeptic that she is she was all too quick to jump on the bandwagon and suggest doing a fertility spell. It would have been far more organic had the friend suggested it at a bar after a drunken night out, moping about how she'd never have children of her own. That actress was pretty terrible and her instincts/delivery was just off. And yes, it made no sense to reconvene at the library to perform the spell (and then not remove all traces of doing so). Also, talking about such personal matters in the library made no sense either.

It seems rather silly that the shapeshifter was able to break into her home with a simple skeleton key. The episode description read that an "ancient enemy" was intent on ending the Beauchamp family line. In that case, being a seemingly powerful witch, why couldn't Joanna put a protection spell around her house? Or at least have a halfway decent security system?

Speaking of shifters, that evil Joanna makeup was awful! At least hire some decent prosthetics people. Freya's ex-lover from another lifetime's (phew, that's a mouthful) sunburn was just as laughable.

I think the pilot suffered from pacing issues. Since this show only has a 10 episode order (versus the more traditional 13 or 22), they're trying to advance the plot as quickly as possible. Unfortunately it comes at the cost of organic character development. That is something that cannot be sacrificed if you want the audience to grow to genuinely care about the characters and the situations they find themselves in. There was also a lot of lazy writing. The number one rule in writing a script, screenplay or novel is to show and not tell. Here the characters are doing the opposite, by telling and not showing. For example, Ingrid declares "I'm a rational skeptic. I'm a wallflower."

They need to turn down the camp. I wish this show took itself a little more seriously and had a darker tone, like the Dark Shadows revival series from 1991.

  19. Wow! Thank you for the detailed response and review! I really enjoyed your review because these were all thoughts I had while watching too! My sister and I were laughing it off during the commercial breaks. You know how, when you watch a CW show, despite the premise, you have to be a bit wary because that show may get that CW touch to it? That's how I felt about this show. I was intrigued by the premise, but wary of the Lifetime touch that may affect the show. I've decided that if they continue with all of these flaws I also see, including scenes that are sexualized, with no sense of reason or even a decent segue; I'll just have to accept this show as a campy Lifetime version of a witch show. I'm not sure I'll stick around to watch the show regularly, if they don't work out some of these problems though. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
