I liked it, I wished it was longer. I would have liked more scenes with the people of Roanoke. This ep felt too short. I liked the use of the old language, too.
Sam W did suggest that the Roanoke colony disappearance was caused by a demonic plague and the word "Croatoan" might be the name of the demon that caused it. Both SH and SPN are filmed in Van and deal crudely with some similar subject matter.
Damn you, major league baseball! I liked seeing Katrina more. The call to Oxford was interesting. As insufferable as he is, Morales has a point. Haha, plastic stymies Ike. The Middle English was lazy!
A slow roller of a episode made excellent by the acting of the cast, especially Nicole Beharie (Abbie) and Tom Mison (Ichabod). When Ichabod went down with the sickness Abbie was able to carry the load herself and get it done..................Abbie has the stuff from which heroes are made is what this episode established! 3 long weeks until the next episode "Sleepy Heads" which looks great by the way. 4 A RIDE THAT WILL LEAVE YOU HEADLESS, I am Nobody!!!
Some things about this show I love, but others confound me! They really try hard to make Ichabod look smart by making everyone else look incredibly stupid. It really lowers the level of the show and lowers my enjoyment.
A little boy dressed in clothing from hundreds of years ago appears and speaks a ancient (and now dead) language from the Middle Ages and Abbie's first theory is that he was kidnapped and taught Middle English? Seriously?
Death of the Four Horsemen has come and they know others will follow. Then a mysterious virus appears and they do not immediately think of the possibility that it could relate to another of the Four Horsemen, Pestilence? I'm not a detective, but it certainly was my first thought.
Although Pestilence is considered to be the rider of the white horse... not black. Maybe they wanted some separation from Death's "pale" horse?
- I did like Roanoke Colony being brought into the show's mythology. Always been fascinated by the disappearance of the people and the one clue, the word Croatoan carved into a tree. Sadly they just skimmed over it. Understandably... - I enjoyed Crane's commentary on what constitutes "old" to him. - Also nice to see the Captain back Abbie when push came to shove.
This was the weakest of the episodes so far to me. There was less humor throughout, but the drama did not really increase to balance that fact out. Because of that it felt slow to me and a bit flat.
So, tonight I really listened to Icabod's voice over narration for the episode and, for the first time, i really heard.... the guy who awoke 250 years after he died is seeing things *he* wouldn't have believed if he weren't seeing them with his own eyes. that just struck me as funny.
Am I mistaken or do paramedics use apparatis that keep them from putting their mouths on patients in the field? You know...so they don't catch the plague?
Figured the ex was going to more than walk through a room and say 'hi'. I'm guessing the school investigation won't be his only query.
This ep didn't blow me away...It was too simple and predictable for me. But given how much I love the characters I enjoyed watching none the less.
Kind of disappointed with the episode. With only 13 episodes, I didn't expect to see another COTW. I don't like howthey introduce us to so many things only to resolve them in the same episode. I would like to see more progress with the storyline.
The show could really benefit from a 2 or 3 episode arc where they struggle to figure out what is going on and Ichabod does not have the answer on the tip of his tongue as the first clue appears. Ya know, actually do detective work.
It all seems so formulaic and routine right now.
Step 1. Mysterious event occurs that no one believes possible.
Step 2. Tell Ichabod the details of the case.
Step 3. Ichabod reveals that when he was 16 he took a Summer extension course in that very topic on a whim.
Step 4. Research said topic and find the answer within minutes despite the event being an enigma of ancient origins just minutes ago..
Step 5. Save the day while being heroic and witty.
best summary and completely nailed the, rather sadly, formula of the show. for me, and my love of this genre, I just wish it had more meat on the bones and depth in the soul. there might, hopefully, be a turn around but i am already getting bored with it.
There was a single thing that bugged me about the Roanoke thing. If they all died as the result of some sort of plague, why were there no bodies to find?
It's so weird, but so far I like the odd number episodes way more then the even numbered ones! XD Of course I loved this one with the plague and the time bubble with "lost colony" (on an "Island") extending into purgatory! Nice to know one of the other 4 Horseman. Really interesting stuff with Katrina and Moloch--looking forward to learning a little more about why she is stuck there...
Because they some how were persevered and time traveled to modern day.
I think Roanoke is an extension of (or a bridge between) Purgatory, which is why the other Horseman would have been able to use it to cross into this reality, as Tom left the Island and started to spread the plague... It's also why I think Ichabod could finally get back in touch with Katrina, because basically a portal was opening.
I'm hoping that all of these puddle-deep episodes do build to something.. All combining with factoids from each episode into something larger, grander, smarter! I just highly doubt that will happen by how the first 5 episodes have gone.
Basically we have had the pilot, the episode with the Hessian loyalists and Moloch, and 3 self-contained COTW episodes that have been "solved" that will have very little carryover.
I was hoping that the shortened season would lead to more serialization and deeper stories, but so far 60% of the 5 episodes in this 13-episode season have been COTW with very little myth arc..I really hope the second "half" of the season has much more meat to it, because the first 5 episodes left me hungry,,, in a bad way.
I did like the use of real history, at least touching on real history to make their personal mythos on it a bit more believable.. .
I can understand Abbie not quite believing that she is the all important Second Witness, but for her to week after week to continue to just not grasp obvious aspects of the supernatural side of the cases is frustrating even if the actign is marginally better.
"I'm surprised you did not like the Moloch episode. It was by far the best episode after the pilot to me."
I liked it in terms of the mythos (it opened doors and gave clarity), but I disliked it because I felt it was all action and not very character driven. It felt too slap-bang for my tastes.
But I agree with you on Abbie! It's at a point where she just needs to be more on board instead of all of this contiual doubt, as you said there has been enough supernatural events that should prove to her that something "bigger" relating to God and his enemies is happening!!!
You might be interested in reading this,it might answer your question on COTW,and more? http://www.vulture.com/2013/10/why-fox-sleepy-hollow-breakout-hit.html
I have a question to someone who knows more about english than I do. Did they really use middle english in 1587? Shakespeare wrote most of his plays not long after that, and his work is in early modern english, so that doesn't make much sense. On wikipedia I found that " The Middle English period ended at about 1470", but I don't know how much faith I should but in that. Any thoughts?
That's part of the mystery. My take on the explanation in the episode was that when they disappeared they didn't literally go to Sleepy Hollow. Virginia Dare took them to another plane and, when Thomas, escapes the town appeared in Sleepy Hollow.
"A little boy dressed in clothing from hundreds of years ago appears and speaks a ancient (and now dead) language from the Middle Ages and Abbie's first theory is that he was kidnapped and taught Middle English? Seriously?"
I took that weak speech as Abbie shoveling sh....hokum for the benefit of the CDC guy standing there. Ridiculous theory yes, but easier for the CDC dude to swallow than...I'm from the 1500s and have been living in an alternate universe for several hundred years.
I can agree with you easily about them stretching Abbie's skepticism for too long. It's at the point where instead of looking like healthy 21st century skepticism it looks like blind (stupid) stubbornness.
It feels to me the writers are still settling in; like they're still trying to determine out what's going to work for this show. It does feel like this show is more COTW (I think network execs stil kind of think are scared of the dreaded arc story.) I didn't realize that the 13 order was a final order for the season. I was expecting a back nine announcement. I'm hoping that the early season 2 pick up means the writers will be able to settle in and delve more into the big picture aspect of the story sooner rather than later.
Yep 13 episodes is the planned full season. Generally with short run seasons like that there is a lot more serialization. So part of the problem is admittedly the series not matching my expectations .
I think they can settle in and keep me as a viewer, but I am a bit scared by the article Laura linked above. It sounds like they are adamant about each week having a COTW with closure. It is very hard to find a balance of good seasonal serial arc when each week needs to have its own self-contained story with closure. With so few episodes it (the lack of serialized arcs with deep story) becomes that much more obvious to me.
I'm looking forward to the moment they decide to leave Abbie's skepticism behind! I understand her back story and her reasons for the skepticism, but at some point (I think we are there now) you seem stubborn, childish, unintelligent, and a bit delusional if you continue to avoid the realities in front of you.
Yeah, I wasn't too happy when I read Laura's article either! I'm still hoping though it's a bit of lie to please the network, because I think so many times first seasons are that way and then by the time we get to second or third season is when we see the writers have leeway in writing a more serialized show...
I do like it, but I wish it would get more serialized. I'm hoping this is just a pitch for the first season to draw a bigger audience in and then next season things will start to change...
Ya, Me too! I hope Kurtzman & Orci hold true to their words "Its definitely going to get crazier,i mean a lot crazier." I suspect it will happen when John Nobel joins in the fun, which i believe is the next episode...
Sorry to burst your bubble there but SPN is filmed in Vancouver and Sleepy Hollow is depicted as a town in upstate NY but it's filmed in North Carolina.
Might explain why Revolution left NC to Texas for season 2 lol..jk
I only skimmed the article, but between the comments about the emotional lines that carry through and the comment about not enough soaps on television the article make me think they're doing the same thing Supernatural did its first season (and I am only talk about their first season so please don't fuss at me about where their story has ultimately gone.) Supernatural designed their first season to be primarily COTW as they laid the foundation to their arc story.
The COTW elements don't bug me as much as, what feels like, the off pacing. Abbie's refusal to get in the groove and balance between Abbie and Ichabod as they work the cases (what someone referred to as making Ichabod the only smart person in the room. Given that the season is *only* 13 episodes...I'm a little worried. But for right now...I'm willing to go with them. (long as they improve)
I have that complaint with almost every proceduralish-serializedish show I watch (there are some exceptions though... POI for instance I actually think often works better with the standalones because they are so good, but it depends). I also wish Sleepy Hollow gets more serialized but I am more than willing to endure this stage in order for it to get the ratings initially, as Fringe did.
So - Purgatory is a forest. The same as Supernatural. The guy from the CDC played an FBI agent on Supernatural. Croatoan virus. Croatoan is tied to? Roanoke. I'm the only one seeing all of these?
Yes, lol That blonde guy played Frank on TVD but you don't see me connecting every piece of evidence. I love SPN as much as the next fan, but how bout we keep The CW away from FOX, just for tonight? lol
I liked it. A lot!! I'm team Ichabbie all the way. (Can't help it, i love their pairing, partners, friends, potentially future couple, w.e they totally work) But i was happy to see, okk i wasn't "happy" but i didn't MIND seeing Katrina..I would really like to know what she's keeping from Ichabod....W/e it is, she seemed VERY upset about it, in a guilty sort of way...I didn't like that feeling. I loved the beginning..."Some new clothes wouldn't hurt." Squeee, is this a tease?? Writers have you heard my plea?? Will he get one nice suite?? lmao Abbie you can take him to Party City for all i care, and get him a new uniform. lol....I liked that Abbie found a way to cure Ichabod and Thomas, or does Thomas count at all cuz he was already dead?? Ok he was turned to flesh once he crossed over but still he would've just been dying again, am i right? LOL W/e she kicked ass. I liked that Ichabod said "Let's go home." Clapping hands!! He's adapting to the 21st century...he does belong in the here and now. Happy sigh, there's soo many things i want him to try...A movie, the beach, theme parks, hahaha i'm excited FOR him. I loved the promo that they showed (don't think i'm not rewinding it over and over). It seemed like a roller coaster ride of non stop fun. And b/c my eye sight is so sharp, duh of course i saw the hand holding between Ichabbie!! However, the only thing that really caught my attention, was what he said in that moment. I think he's going to sacrifice himself, so that the Headless Horseman can be put to rest permanently. Which is why i can see Abbie crying at an intense level. I don't like that and i hope they find a loophole asap to break that link between them...oh one more thing i need to add...Luke is getting on my nerves!
agreed, if you are going to have short seasons, which i sometimes like, you need to keep the writing and plotting tight and confined, none of which is really happening here. i feel it will all be backlogged/rushed in the last episodes.
I think def those things are true, but in most Spiritual texts, any kind of story about enlightenment usually does use "the forest" (Man in the wilderness"/Stanger in a Starngeland/Paradise Lost) concept in relation to anything "alternate".
I don't think it's all coincidence. Even on the Black List, which is similar at times to Alias, I see John Eisendrath (an Alias writer/producer) writes/produces and Isabella Rossellini gets a stint.
Even in Sleepy Hallow give Orci, Kurtzman, and Olin's influence, there are times where this story with Jennifer and Abbey is reminiscent to Sydney and Nadia and Rambaldi artifacts along with dancing around the number 47 all provide some very similar ideas...
"A little boy dressed in clothing from hundreds of years ago appears and speaks a ancient (and now dead) language from the Middle Ages and Abbie's first theory is that he was kidnapped and taught Middle English? Seriously?"
Yeah, I was hoping she would get a little more with the program by now, but I do think her acting was better in this episode, despite being such an average and unimaginative character...although she did figure out the Baptizing thing allegedly through "God", so she wasn't a total loss.
"This was the weakest of the episodes so far to me. There was less humor throughout, but the drama did not really increase to balance that fact out. Because of that it felt quite slow to me and a bit flat."
I really liked this one, episodes 3 and 1, but not so much episodes 4 and 2. (so I guess I should expect not to be found of episode 6 :P )
" I did like Roanoke Colony being brought into the show's mythology. Always been fascinated by the disappearance of the people and the one clue, the word Croatoan carved into a tree. Sadly they just skimmed over it. Understandably..."
I'm hoping that all of these little things build to something, but it was neat of them to use actual history here. I don't know if they will give the word some false etymology and continue to use it in some way. I hope we will eventually get away from the procedural feel.
the show is trying to be and is a fun romp at times but this is often a sacrifice on the alter of good writing/plotting. a lot of it which is just lazy in many respects such as Ichabod being a panacea. he knows everything, does everything and there is little left for others to be or do but the heavy lifters and scene fillers. there is no effort made to really discover anything or work out the problem when Ichabod is a walking encyclopedia and happens to had met this person, saw this event etc... I hope they break out of this mold and try to actually write beyond using him as a crutch.
also people like Abbie are highly trained, and I am assuming educated as she was going to go to the FBI, and yet she nor her know it all companion can't make a simple deductions because everyone is going around trying to be quippy and up the non-existent tension. and not knowing basic information that anything 6th grader should know, like Roanoke, is just a ridiculous conceit on the part of the writers and again making Ichabod look like the grand sage and Abbie a moron. I get they like doing the exposition/flashbacks but found this one a bit hard to swallow.
the idea they had for Roanoke, up until the end where it feel apart and made little sense, i was beginning to like and did appreciate that Abbie came through with some sort of solution to the problem even if it was founded in no evidence and was just a random speculation built on the obvious plot thread of her having "faith". But in the end the whole episode felt like a pointless exercise designed or basically written around this conceit that did payoff all that much and was again tropey.
Standout Trope: the typical having a crisis moment for a non believer in a church scene.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
God, I love this show so much. Ugh at the three week break. DAMN YOU BASEBALL.
ReplyDeleteOh God, I tried to resist, but I hardcore ship Abbie/Ichabod now. She was worried about him!
Did Katrina cheat? Is that what they were implying?
Love their Roanoke explanation, too.
I liked it, I wished it was longer. I would have liked more scenes with the people of Roanoke. This ep felt too short. I liked the use of the old language, too.
ReplyDeleteThe running time was short a couple minutes.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if she cheated. I think she may have sold her soul to Moloch? Or tied her soul to something Moloch needs to succeed.

ReplyDeleteCool! I haven't read very much on Sleepy Hollow so this is perfect! Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeletePS: Sorry about your headache! I've been having really bad ones too! I think mine are allergy related :/
Your welcome! Ya,i think this one is also allergy related too.I'm glad your liking Sleepy Hollow! :)
ReplyDeleteBut Famine is supposed to be the black horse. They've messed with the four horsemen. Another mess up.
ReplyDelete"Pale" should have been palomino (or something like it), not white as white is supposed to be Pestilence as you said.
Palomino is the first thing that comes to my mind as pale - and I think one was in Ichabod's dream in episode 2 - it was so dark it's hard to say.
I wonder if Famine will have the pale horse?
Here's hoping War at least has its proper "red" horse (a chestnut/sorrel would be the best option).
I enjoyed the episode. I always find a bunch of stuff to like in every episode, even the Sandman one, which was probably my least favorite.
ReplyDeleteGood thing I'm not a history buff. I'm already nit-picky about the Four Horsemen and which horses they're riding.
I think Katrina sold her soul to Moloch only to save Ichabod.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode, it's becoming a regular thing so I'm happy for it.

ReplyDeleteagreed, if you are going to have short seasons, which i sometimes like, you need to keep the writing and plotting tight and confined, none of which is really happening here. i feel it will all be backlogged/rushed in the last episodes.
ReplyDeleteI think def those things are true, but in most Spiritual texts, any kind of story about enlightenment usually does use "the forest" (Man in the wilderness"/Stanger in a Starngeland/Paradise Lost) concept in relation to anything "alternate".
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's all coincidence.
Seriously?"
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was hoping she would get a little more with the program by now, but I do think her acting was better in this episode, despite being such an average and unimaginative character...although she did figure out the Baptizing thing allegedly through "God", so she wasn't a total loss.
ReplyDeletealso people like Abbie are highly trained, and I am assuming educated as she was going to go to the FBI, and yet she nor her know it all companion can't make a simple deductions because everyone is going around trying to be quippy and up the non-existent tension. and not knowing basic information that anything 6th grader should know, like Roanoke, is just a ridiculous conceit on the part of the writers and again making Ichabod look like the grand sage and Abbie a moron.
