It was girls night out in New York City, as Person of Interest tackled a playboy in danger.
Reese and Shaw fighting over who gets to row the boat, supposedly undercover on a date, was quite brilliant. I love the banter between the two of them, especially since it never seems to cease.
At first, Murphy appeared to be a simple guy. Shaw sees him change his look, and find a new girl to be with, while Reese finds pictures of multiple women in his apartment. A simple guy? I suppose if you classify stalking as simple...
Reese perhaps encountered the situation of his wildest imaginations, with Carter, Shaw and Zoe all in the same room as him, modelling very flashy dresses. Finch was his usual awkward self, while Carter's doubt as to how Shaw was alive was... limited. She's been with the guys too long to know that they fake deaths. And, she expected to need her gun. The weapons that the three had were fun, and as per usual, Finch was doubtful of the thing he hates. Reese's line of "You just look... angry. All the time" to Shaw quite possibly was the best part of the episode. In fairness, he's right. Her look at Murphy upon entry to the club was menacing. How is she ever meant to get guys like that?
Fusco's usual self resulted in a complaint about the bar's prices, but compliments to the view, quite possibly accepting the "rip-off" price just because of the club's added benefits. His role has been reduced hugely from last season, but he's still a fun character to have around.
Trigger-happy Shaw. Maybe I'll call her that in every review I do. "Should I shoot him yet?" and "Then we can finally shoot him." were two of her best lines. She really needs some self-control. We do learn that she's not a date type of woman, which isn't really surprising. What is surprising is that any men she does happen to meet don't end up dead. She finally got to pull the trigger.. but not on Murphy, which is unfortunate in her mind. However, her exchange with Carter complimenting each other's aim was humouring.
The target on Murphy's back was put down to a complicated love relationship with the daughter of a billionaire. Murphy's impregnation of his daughter stopped the relationship, despite an abortion, which was blatantly obvious that it would be faked, and put a hit out on him after seeing Murphy at the daughter's funeral.
The Machine decided to give Finch another number, presumably Root's number, while Murphy made off with his child. How's that for timing? Reese meanwhile knocked out Wellington with minimal difficulty, an unusual trend on the show.
It was nice to see a little emotional moment between Murphy and his son, and I was shocked that he had the self-control to not tell Alex that he's his father. Of course, it was decent of him to let the POI team settle this in the correct way, as Carter did by submitting Alex's birth certificate into evidence. Everybody wins! Well, except Wellington.
Bear's role was much improved on than last week. Multiple mentions and Shaw playing ball with him made for fun viewing. He gained a new collar at Shaw's expense which impressed Finch. She even took hm out with her towards the end of the episode. Bear's possibly the best part of the show - he needs a decent role every week.
Root's continued confrontation with Dr. Carmichael was fun to watch. I find it interesting that Root has no idea what will happen.. yet at the same time she does, and she's happy to let it happen. I am still unsure as to how Root is controlling the Machine as well as she is with just her voice. It's awesome and cool to watch. Root is scary. Her knowledge of what would happen in her escape completely freaked me out. She escapes, just how she said she would.
Hersh was back and looking for Root, something that is to be expected since she has direct access to the Machine. His conversation with a mysterious woman on the phone yielded no leads as to her identity. The show has had success with her hidden identity, but I think it needs to be released at some point. Perhaps the Christmas break episode. Anyway, back to Hersh. He tried to kill Root, but failed, instead Root shot him. Root lets him live, shockingly at the request of the Machine. The episode ends with Finch entering the mental hospital to see the chaos, and informing "Mr. Reese, we may have a problem."
Overall I enjoyed the episode. The main storyline was strong at times, but waned in its ability to keep me interested. Fortunately, sub-plots like Root, Bear or the partnership between Shaw, Carter and Zoe made for brilliant viewing. 8/10.
