Charlie’s speaking Mandarin and the gang is huffing gasoline... so it seems that David Benioff and D.B Weiss, creators of HBO’s
Game of Thrones who co-wrote this episode, knew just the right amount of weird to bring to the table. In “Flowers For Charlie” the gang shows up to volunteer for a scientific experiment and Charlie seems to be just what the science bitches (R.I.P Country Mac) running the test are looking for - they’ve developed a pill that can apparently make someone 7x smarter than they are, and while it’s been tested on a rat (one whom Charlie helpfully offers to bash) they now need a human subject. So as Charlie begins popping smart pills the gang is left to take care of “Charlie work” back at the bar - there’s a rat problem, and no one’s quite sure how to take care of it. Always Sunny this season I’ve said the same thing, but its worth repeating: the show is on a roll this year. I’ve heard complaints in the past that recent seasons stories have gotten too over the top at times, but there’s nothing normal about these characters, and embracing the utter madness that they seem to naturally create and attract is the fun of it all. Still, the funniest material comes not from any given situation but from the character moments that let each actor shine in their unique roles - Dennis’ plan to ‘seduce’ the mouse out of hiding, Sweet Dee's wild enjoyment of huffing gas (“
Ohhh, you guys! Yes! That’s really good gas!” / “
Pass the gas!”) and Charlie’s spider-centered super project are all great.
So, does the pill really work or is it just a placebo? And how the hell does the gang catch a rat without Charlie? You’ll have to tune in to find out, but I can promise that as with any great Charlie-centric episode there’s a cameo by the waitress and a whole lot of cheese. Excited yet?
