Homeland - 3.05 - The Yoga Play - Review
Oct 29, 2013
Homeland ReviewsThe Yoga Play, Homeland’s fifth episode to its third season was tense, really tense; it was very informative, but also quite slow in terms of story.
After last week’s reveal, I was left wondering, who’s in? How many people know of Carrie’s triple agent mission? Now we know the possible involvement of one more character. Quinn didn’t know. Were Saul and Carrie the only ones involved, and maybe possibly Virgile, or is this mission bigger than they are letting on? Since Saul’s going on a fancy duck hunt, he intrusts Carrie’s safety to Quinn, therefore revealing him "The Plan". Pretty smart move Saul, it’s pretty obvious Quinn’s crushing on Carrie pretty hard and will therefore do pretty much anything to guaranty her safety.
Just like many of you out there, I am quite pleased to see the end of the teenage wreck of a relationship that was Dana and Leo’s. Jessica went to Carrie for help, and it was kind of a heartfelt moment. Mainly because we could reminisce how great the first season’s plot was. Jessica asks and of course Carrie goes out of her way to help Brody’s family. As one Jessica would say, “She’s in love, who knows what she’ll do.”
I really enjoyed the Carrie doppelganger in The Yoga Play, took me by surprise. The Yoga Plan was basically a tactic to shake off her surveillance in order to mentally abuse some FBI agent to help bring Dana back home. The plan was great; it’s use, not so much.
Once the FBI started to give a crap about Brody’s daughter, it wasn’t very long before America’s Worst Driver and his girlfriend got in a fight. I am not sure I understood what Leo actually did, but important part is he was responsible for his brother’s death and Dana didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. She is now back, in what is possibly the world’s most depressing bedroom.
Saul basically had the crappiest of days possible. He goes duck, or geese, hunting with people he doesn’t seem to appreciate, at all. When he thinks he will permanently be head of the CIA, the job is given to a petty Senator I am pretty sure we will all grow to despise. He then came home earlier, only to find his wife in the middle of what looked like a pretty romantic dinner with a “colleague”. How innocent can a date be when you’re wearing a nightgown? To top it off, Carrie gets taken from her home by the Iranians.
Lover boy Quinn managed to let Carrie get taken from her own home. Even though Quinn doesn’t seem to see this, I am pretty sure this was an important part of Carrie’s infiltration mission. After making her strip and searching for bugs, the Iranians took Carrie to “The Man”. This means her demands from last episode were heard. If she had been made, why go through all that trouble? Why not just kill her on the spot? They are taking what appears to me to be reasonable precautions to keep their identities and location secret. Saul’s right, she has always been alone. She needs to be, if this mission is to be successful.
As for Brody, I am pretty sure he will come out of the darks to help his daughter when she’s at her all time low (possibly with Carrie’s help). After the end of this episode, this might be sooner than later.
Why did Carrie look so shaken up?
Is Saul going to get sidelined by the new director of the CIA?
The man told Carrie she looked good probably because of all the yoga, do you believe this means she’s been made?
Why was the man creepily looking at a little boy and his mother while eating his sandwich?
How much did you enjoy the diversion yoga play?

Carrie and Brody were the heart of Homeland. So far season three has been like bypass surgery, maybe needed, but not much fun.
ReplyDeleteNice story. I think this post will encourage many people to adopt Yoga as their daily practice.

Good review, although I still found the episode lacking. I want Brody back, I just feel the show uses way too much filler when he's not around.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, I prefer the current Carrie storyline to the Brody one - how much fun is it to watch him trying to stay hidden? (Honestly, they could have skipped that Tower episode and just left us wondering: Where is he? How is he? and I probably would be more intrigued.) The interaction between the two of them - or at least their storylines - is when the show shines. I'm all for touching Saul/Carrie scenes (he's a much better father figure for her than her own dad), but we need to get back to Carrie/Brody scenes...or even Brody/Jessica scenes. Here's hoping it doesn't take all season for Carrie to clear Brody's name for the bombing. Let's at least get them back in the same country and interacting. Maybe they decided Damian Lewis doesn't deserve another Emmy, so they just aren't even going to put him in any episodes this season. lol
ReplyDeleteBTW, what about Carrie flushing her meds instead of taking them? Again. I wish they'd just get over that - I'm tired of them using it as a plot device. Wouldn't it be more of an issue if she had been taking them and now is being held by the Iranians and doesn't have access to her meds?
I agree with you about the Brody storyline, but I don't think he'll come out of hiding before the end (or close to) and its a shame! The Carrie/Brody scenes is what made the show awesome!
ReplyDeleteThough I am kind of ling the Quinn/Carrie bond that was developing, how about you?
Also tired of the back and forth crazy Carrie....
They show his family when he's not around and nobody seems to care much for them. Hopefully he'll be back with Carrie soon enough (though I doubt it)
ReplyDeleteAgreed even during the Brody centered episode, Homeland lacked the chemistry these two had. But I am still enjoying most of the episodes so far, not you?
ReplyDeleteYes, I do like Quinn. I wasn't so sure at first, but I like how protective he is of her and that he wouldn't kill Brody because of what it would do to her. However, I'm curious about that nurse and his kid and whether they will show up again at some point.
ReplyDeleteLove the show!

I find all the episodes well written and interesting. There are so many great characters in this show, I guess it's difficult to give them all screen time.
