CBS knows witch way it’s headed this pilot season.
The network has ordered a pilot script for a reboot of Charmed, the long-running, magical-sisters drama that ended in 2006 after eight seasons on The WB
According to Vulture, which broke the news, the project will be written by Chris Keyser (executive producer, Party of Five and Lone Star) and partner Syndey Sidner, and will reimagine the Aaron Spelling series that starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Shannen Doherty (who was replaced by Rose McGowan at the end of Season 3).

Are you kidding me with this, CBS?
ReplyDeleteNo.
Just stop..
ReplyDeleteThis is just a terrible idea. The show is STILL on TV everyday, on Netflix, and only just ended 7 years ago. What the hell, CBS? This just pisses me off to no end.
ReplyDeleteReboots, reboots everywhere...
ReplyDeleteBroadcast television is gradually eroding, as the networks feel more inclined to produce "safe" remakes and spin-offs instead of original, yet "risky" programming.
Reboot but only 10th sezon with orginal trio and make 11th ;P
ReplyDeleteI loved Charmed and like witch shows so I would try this if it becomes a series by I hope they don't mess up Charmeds legacy/greatness.Charmed fans have been asking for a reunion forever or a continuation withChris,Wyatt.I do wish networks would stop remaking, revamping ,rebooting every 70-90s show possible(I did like 90210&Melrose Place 2009 though).
ReplyDeleteYes, unless it's the original cast as leads coming back. We don't need any reboot. Maybe try mashing a movie with all original leads
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me with this, CBS?
ReplyDeleteNo.
This look like a CW idea not CBS...
ReplyDeleteI loved the first time around so I'm not sure how I feel about this. It would have to be something spectacularly special to make me want this.
ReplyDeleteUgh, no thanks. I'd prefer something new over all these spinoffs and reboots.
ReplyDeleteno way, not sure how i feel about it but I don't think they should mess with such an awesome show and even try to make it better or just as good
ReplyDeleteMy thought exactly!
ReplyDeleteNO WAY. I don't like it when they try to reboot shows just b/c they can't come up w. something original. Don't mess w. Charmed.
ReplyDeleteDo reboots ever succeed?
ReplyDeleteI admit: I was hooked on the original, I know it was full of horrible writing and set the show back to status quo after almost every episode but it became a guilty pleasure of mine.
ReplyDeleteRebooting is not the right approach tough, the only reason Charmed became so beloved despite it's obvious flaws was the likablitiy the actresses had. Milan, Combs, McGowan and Doherty had. These four (well three...technically) were what kept people watching, not the plot wich was often rather 'meh'.
If they REALLY want to bring it back they should do it with the original cast. Have the kids of the Charmed ones be the new heroes and the old main characters train them, bring back Doherty, who now I thing might've tones down the ego thing a bit, and McMahon (Cole...in case you forgot...the awesomest character on that show) and you'll have me watch despite how awfull it'll be.
Yes: I'm that shallow. I want three (or more) hot chicks and a badass demon fight other demons, screw the plot at that point
This is why network TV is eroding.. who greenlights shit like this and thinks it's a good idea? They saw some successful witch shows so thought why not bring one back from 10 years ago? The big 4 need to start being open to creativity. This is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteWant them to stop trying to be safe with new shows? How about people stop watching those 50 different cop dramas and comedies? Anything that is even slightly different or original is getting cancelled because people aren't watching them. As broken as the Nielsen Ratings are, they still show a disturbing trend. People just aren't taking risks with original TV shows, most of them are sticking to the tried and true.
ReplyDeleteNetworks may be highly annoying by only looking at the numbers, but those numbers wouldn't exist without the viewers.
Isn't this way too soon for this? And it's not like nowadays' reboots are any success to begin with...
ReplyDeleteseems just a little too soon..... I'm a bit surprised that CBS is looking to do this
ReplyDeletethis has to be a joke you can not mess with classics , first murder she wrote now charmed why are networks doing this they cant just leave a show thats finished alone.
ReplyDeletewhats next a reboot of LOST.
Charmed was a messy show, if this reboot is darker, at least a little more serialized, and better acted, I fully support it. I always felt Charmed was a great concept that failed in its execution. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteUh, I'm torn.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, I loved Charmed despise its flaws because it had such a charismatic cast. So I'm not really interested on seeing it without those characters.
On the other hand, Charmed, as a concept, had so much potential that was never realized on the Aaron Spelling show, a setting like Charmed is ripe for a deep mythology that we never got to see.
So I dunno.
Kudos to CBS for trying something other than a procedural cop show but this is not the way to go...
ReplyDeleteNo. Please no.
ReplyDeleteIs this the year of reboots? I really don't know how I feel - I loved it when it was on (one of my childhood shows) but I'm kind of weary about this reboot. I need more information before I say 'WHY?! Are you crazy?!'
ReplyDeletenext in line - roboot of desperate housewives? or simply
ReplyDeletereboot of friends? all with new casts!
eg: buffy without sarah michelle
gellar is not even buffy! so, charmed without those 3 girls (women) is not even a charmed! original casts make a show, a show!
how can networks become too stupid nowaday? most reboots had failed miserably - knight rider? charlie's angels?
If the original cast is back, I'm in, but if they're not, that's a NO WAY for me.
ReplyDeleteWhy not a reunion instead?.. I'm kind of skeptical but a little hopeful at the same time about the 'reboot' - Witches of East End is brilliant and it fills the Charmed void but I'd like a similar show to what Charmed was. Why not create a brand new magic/witch show with new mythology rather than do a reboot its much more interesting that way.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I seem to be in the minority...
ReplyDeleteI have no issue with CBS wanting to do a show about 3 witch sisters.
I thought the original Charmed was camp gold, but hardly good TV. The writing was mediocre, the plots were cliche, and the action sequences were at times laughable. The actresses had good chemistry with one another though and were (pun intended) quite charming. I honestly think it owed a good deal of its success to the wardrobe department. The leading ladies might be great actresses, but they could certainly wear their clothes well! Sad, but true. Admit it.
As for a new series about 3 sisters that are witches....
Okay maybe it should be called something else, but if they did have an original title you know everyone would say "it's a Charmed rip off!"
Plus, in all honestly... wasn't part of the mythology of Charmed that there was multiple past "charmed" sisters before Prue, Piper, Pheobe and Page came along? Why couldn't 3 new sisters carry on the legacy?
Let's just hope they find a theme song that fits the story without misunderstanding the lyrics! XD
So odd to use a song about growing up a gay man without acceptance by your family or society...
How Soon is Now? by The Smiths lyrics are...
"I am the son and the heir" - not "sun and the air" as Charmed pretended it was to fit the required Wiccan nature elements.
Oh, and can everyone remember the 'Buffy reboot' scare? That never happened, I doubt this will either.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah and there was an Alias scare a couple of years back as well.
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeleteCharmed was dumbed down and skimmed over most of its plots like many shows on the CW. If the CBS series delves into the source material more, and takes the show to a more mature place it could be as good if not better.
My feelings exactly.
ReplyDeleteToo true.
ReplyDeleteI read an article about 5 years ago (I think) about people saying they want something different and the reality of what they want.
The article sourced a study done showing a number of clips of possible shows and movies with unique and original plots or styles, and a number of shows that were almost the same as other shows with just a slight twist to make it different.
By large numbers the group preferred the similar shows compared to the original shows.
The article summed everything up by saying that even if they say the do, most people do not want something new and different, they want something vaguely the same, but slightly different to what they are already comfortable with.
That is why we keep getting gimmick shows.
A cop drama with a fake psychic, a cop drama with a genius, a cop drama with a writer etc...
If its was a reboot i wouldn't want a retelling of the same story. Take the basis of 3 witch sisters and create total new personalities and storylines.
ReplyDeleteAnother idea is doing a sequel. I always wanted to know more about Wyatt and Chris. Obivously the actors aren't available but piper is only part time on PPL so she could come back part time and tell the storyline of young adult Wyatt and chris.
That would be a massive mistake, they need people who are better actors. Holly Marie Combs is great but she couldn't be a sister, she's too old. They're ALL way too old by now.
ReplyDeleteNo! Leave it alone CBS, it's hardly what I'd call old anyway.
ReplyDeleteI remember a while back there were three different shows on with the same premise: The Mentalist, Lie To me, and another show that I can't recall the name of right now. They all had the same thing in common. I kept expecting a new show to be introduced called "The Face Reader".
ReplyDeletethey can focus on their children and have the originals sisters pop in every now a then to help theirs kids Wes Rasmey as Wyatt again Drew Fuller as Chris again Melinda played by Amy Davidson Shelley Hennsing as one of Pheobe daughter Ashley Leggat as the other daughter Mackenzie Rosman as the other daughter Charlotte Arnold as Paige twins daughters Corey Sevier as Paige son
ReplyDeleteOh yeh I like it
ReplyDeleteHow do you see them bringing back Doherty, I mean she died.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe is alive in the canon comics.
ReplyDeletewouldn't be the first ressurection in the charmed universe
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right
ReplyDeleteI wish they would try the new 'different' shows. Too many good ones keep getting canceled, cause of the ratings not being good enough. Maybe people just want boring tv.
ReplyDeleteReboot? Why not be original and make a witch show with a different plot?
ReplyDeleteI don't know...if they really want to do this, I'd much prefer a continuation with the Charmed ones kids all grown up (if they could get the actors that acted as Chris and Wyatt on board).
You are right, it only had what like I think 8 full seasons? Must have been terrible for all those people watching :P
ReplyDeleteIf it was Phoebe's daughters, I could go for that.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind them bringing on Pipers sons thow ;)
ReplyDeleteCharmed was the first show I became a fan of. I was 11. It was sometimes silly and campy, but it had a lot of emotion in it too. That's why I loved it.
ReplyDeleteA lot of older shows were lighter and campy. Many of the classics, I find.
I don't think that's the same for everyone. My shows are all across the board, though mostly in "genre" as it is called improperly (supernatural/sci-fi shows).
ReplyDeleteSome examples:
Heartland - a Canadian family drama with horses
Arrow & Agents of Shield - superhero/comic characters
Supernatural - hunting ghosts, demons, etc.
Person Of Interest & Nikita: Spy stuff
The Mentalist - Done too often, but I love the characters and the Red John plot this year is great.
Hannibal - Is a crime drama based on a movie, but the style of filming and plot makes it more original.
The Vampire Diaries/The Originals - Vampires, romance, dark stuff.
OUAT & Grimm - Basis on fairytales
I have several other shows, including comedies like Melissa and Joey on ABC Family.
That would be my preference, I love Chris and Wyatt. Honestly Chris was who first got me into the show.
ReplyDeleteFor me the downfall was the last season. Outside a few episodes like the awesome series finale, Season 8 was awful, imo. But otherwise I loved everything about this show. I even accepted the fairies.
ReplyDeleteYeah, proven by all the cop shows and their spin-offs. There doesn't need to be 2, 3 or more spin offs for a show. Occasionally 1 for a good show is fine, but not more.
ReplyDeleteHow is that possible?! Prequel?
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way with variety in genres and styles..
I like finding new shows different from things I watch too, but the few new and unique shows that come out each year tend to get cancelled. Sadly.
Thankfully a few cable networks have been putting out a nice selection of more unique programming.
What? It ended like 5 years ago? That's just dumb.
ReplyDeleteWish they would reboot Stargate SG1 or Babylon 5. How bout Farscape or Alias? I'm tired of vampires and witches...ba humbug.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I am afraid they would ruin one of my most beloved shows I always wanted to see the next generation of halliwells; Chris, wyatt and their sister and cousins work together. It could be interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt's because the original content doesn't get viewers. While we are still transitioning to new methods of counting viewership the safe bets will be on air for a while.
ReplyDeleteNot A Good Idea Charmed Is An Inspirational Series And To Reboot This Show Would Ruin It.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that CBS would copy a series that was on another network to make it one of their own. It means that the they lack confidence and have no idea how to create new series. I'll always cherish the original Charmed series (with Alyssa, Holly, Shannen and Rose), but I would never follow this reboot idea. Please CBS come up with new ideas. Most of the shows on their network are getting older (and will eventually end), it's time to start now.
ReplyDeleteThis Is CBS.It would end up as procedual show or a comedy.
ReplyDeleteI say no to this.Haven't networks learned their lesson with TV reboots by now?
Sequel! You can find it out reading the comics :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Charmed. I grew up with this show. I don't need a reboot.
ReplyDeleteWill the same actors plays as the characters or new people with new storylines? Is like going to be a reunion. I dont get what reboot means
ReplyDeleteThis is too soon for me. While I didn't watch the latter seasons of Charmed, the first seasons were some of the first real television I watched. It's what got me hooked on American television (together with Alias) and dragged me into the online fandom world.
ReplyDeleteMaking a reboot IS a massive mistake.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone share this?
