I could not care less about Sarah's backstory... I hope they don't dive too much into it. And I am not impressed with them bringing Sarah back from the dead and making her Black Canary. That being said, this show is really picking up. I love how Felicity and Diggle inch a bit closer to learning Oliver's backstory... the character relationships between Dig, Felicity, and Oliver are the heart of this show.
I am not against there being TWO canaries(laurel has to have a start somewhere), but one should REALLY have been in the past, just like Yao Fei was in the past. Having them both in the present cheapens the moment when Laurel becomes that.
Laurel is the fake Black Canary. The only tie she has to the character is the name, and a name is meaningless without the personality or capabilities to back the name up..
At this point there is no way that Laurel will ever be able to fill her sister's shoes as Black Canary. Laurel as Canary will never be Green Arrow's equal (or superior in CQC).
Ideally, Laurel as we know her on the show would never have existed, and Laurel would instead have been lost with the Queen's Gambit like Sara, as played by Caity Lotz.
Wow, someone who agrees with me. I figured I'd get a lot of hate for not having the same opinion as the majority, but not that someone would agree with me haha. I can't understand the reason for bringing Sarah back from the dead other than to make love triangles and die all over again to add drama... and season one set Laurel up soo well for being the Black Canary, I thought for sure it was leading to something big for her. But brining her helpless-to-kick-ass-crime-fighter sister back seems like a strange move.
It now feels like a free for all, if a young defenseless woman can come back from the dead after 5 hellish years and be a crime fighting machine, everyone from the island that was associated with Oliver at some point will most likely find their way to Starling City and cause trouble. Maybe that was the point... I don't know. But I'm actually enjoying this season more than I thought I would.
Laurel is also a fake BC, as the real BC is Dinah Drake. When the comics started to write BC as a younger character, they retconned the story to make the younger BC Laurel, daughter of the original BC.
I think this season will be about Laurel's 'crucible' in order to bring her to a place where she could find the will to go off and seek the training necessary for her to become the BC.
I agree, she is spiraling big time and it's only the start of the season. As annoying as she is sometimes she is a strong character who is more than capable of eventually being the Black Canary.
Sara was mixed up with some insanely dangerous people, and she's probably a member of the League of Assassins. As such, she is a match for Oliver (as Black Canary is supposed to be). Laurel... downward spirals into a substance abuse problem and picks herself back up by deciding to become a vigilante? A Laurel Black Canary would always be a faint shadow of Sara's far more capable original. Martial arts lessons would be no substitute for real world experience with the League of Assassins.
Really, the only claim Laurel has to the Black Canary mantle is her name. Sara has the skills, a backstory, a relationship with Sin and with Oliver. Plus she has an actress who can actually act and who has chemistry with the leading male. Laurel has none of these things.
Look buddy, I'm not here to argue with you. I'm not that person who gets online for the sole reason of starting a quarrel with someone I don't know. I am here to express my likes and dislikes about this pretty kick ass show with others who may or may not feel the same. You like Sarah as the Black Canary and I don't, that's okay.
Please keep pretending that things like character development do not exist.
Laurel has the correct motivations and personality to BE Black Canary, she needs the push to be it and this storyline just might be it. Also apparently both sisters were trained in martial arts and spared in their spare time with each other, so combat proficiency argument is null and void.
Yes, I'm well aware of what the writers have said. Doesn't change the objective fact that Laurel is not the first BC, which is what Jo and I were discussing. This show is going in another direction with the mythology, which is fine with me. Calm down with the caps man, it's only a TV show.
Good point, but Laurel definitely has the passion and drive to be the Black Canary. Just because she wasn't shipwrecked doesn't mean she won't eventually be the Black Canary...
...maybe they brought Sarah back just to kill her off permanently and that is what pushes Laurel to find it in herself to be the Black Canary... at this point Sarah's her purpose on the show is a complete mystery. We'll just have to wait and see... the writers are not exactly writing this show based primarily off the comics.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It obvious why Quetin is in great danger......
ReplyDeletelooking forward to it

ReplyDeleteCaity Lotz!Black Canary is the best Black Canary. We need to keep her.
ReplyDeleteFELICITY <3
ReplyDeleteI want to see the Extended promo. I'll be staying up for that.
ReplyDeleteSorry not gonna happen. You might like her and all but she still is nothing but a fake.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.

ReplyDeleteWell I wouldn't say "fake" she was the second Black Canary, her mother Dinah was the first... if I remember correctly
ReplyDeleteActually, there were 2 versions of the BC in parallel universes. It was this they retconned to make them mother and daughter during the Silver Age.
ReplyDeleteohh okay cool, I didn't know what. I've been having to catch up on all my Green Arrow knowledge when this show got picked up.
ReplyDeletelol, no worries. I've been doing the same, as its been many years since I was into the whole comics world. :)

ReplyDeleteExcuse you? that's like saying that Tim Drake is fake Robin because Grayson was the first.
ReplyDeleteDinah Laurel Lance might have taken over from her mother, but she IS Black Canary. Legacy characters is a thing in comicverse.
The writers already stated that Caity's Canary is NOT "THE" Canary and that that will always be Laurel.

ReplyDeleteDAMN, this show! I am freaking obsessed with it! Love it, this looks great! Looks like we'll get Sarah flashbacks which is awesomeee!
