Arrow - 2.01 - City of Heroes - Best Scene Poll
10 Oct 2013
Arrow PollsSince this is our first Best Scene poll for Arrow this season, here's the basics for anyone who has not participated before. Polls will be posted on either Thursday or Friday. There will be 10-12 voting options and the last one will always be Other. If you do not like the choices, please tell what your choice would be in the comments. There has never been a time in Arrow where I do not have at least twice as many scenes written down as I am allowed to post, so if your favorite scene isn't there, it is nothing personal. It just means that there are a lot of awesome scenes in Arrow. In fact, sometimes I have to combine some things to narrow the choices.
For each poll, you will be allowed to choose only one scene but we encourage you to name your runners-up in the comments as well. Polls do not close, but there is only one vote per IP per poll. Sometimes I will also throw in a bonus poll. These do not have the same choice limitations so they may be longer, although I still cannot put every great option in there so I edit for length. This will usually have an Other choice as well. As always, happy voting!
Since this is the Arrow season premiere, a bonus poll is of course necessary. These are just some of the much narrowed down great quotes list. Sometimes it is for the words themselves, others for the delivery. Vote your choice and happy voting.

There were so many important scenes in this episode - Oliver killing the kidnapper, Thea defending Moira, Oliver's speech about honoring Tommy's memory (parts 1-83) :-P - but in the end my vote goes to the one that fulfilled my wish list....Walter came back. Here's hoping he is a regular presence despite divorcing Moira. Surely he will be at her trial, right? As for quote, that one is easy. Thea's, "If I hug you, are they going to shoot us?" was spot-on with enough humor to alleviate any excess emoangsting.
ReplyDeleteScene: Other - I think Oliver's visit with Moira was the most satisfying scene of the episode for me. I think their relationship will get very interesting this season. Runner up: The Thea / Moira scene.
ReplyDeleteQuote: Felicity's coconut quote. Felicity is seemingly the only one who can get Oliver to break when he's in emo-soldier overdrive. She got him to crack a smile, even if his back was turned and she and Diggle couldn't see it.
Could hardly choose they were all so good but I loved the flashbacks as well
ReplyDeleteThis is hard to be honest, to many good choices. In the end, I went with Felicity and Diggle in the plane, that whole scene was fun to watch, I like Felicity and Diggle's interactions, and I know they're part of team Arrow, but it'd be nice to have more scenes with just the two of them, maybe I like them because there's nothing romantic about it.
ReplyDeleteBut also, both of Moira's scenes, not a lot of screen time, but powerful scenes.
Best quote? Again, I went with Diggle and Felicity in the plane. Another one I liked was when Isabel said to Oliver "Since you majored in dropping out of college, let me put this in terms that are easy for you to understand." His face was priceless.
I also liked Diggle & Felicity's bicker-banter in the premiere episode.
ReplyDeleteI think the most surprisingly enjoyable scene of the episode was Roy talking to Thea about her mother and about parents in general. I never would have thought Roy could be the voice of reason about anything.
ReplyDeleteThat scene was the very last one I cut in order to get it down to 12 options. I also love that scene, especially since I was pretty sure at that moment that I was going to get my Walter time. I knew I hadn't missed a casting call for Oliver's balding uncle from Des Moines.
ReplyDeleteI loved that one too because you could see Oliver giving in and allowing himself to be glad to see them.
I agree with you, Felicity brings out a lighter side of him, she'll be important in preventing him from going to his darker side eventually, yet I don't want them together as a couple, I'd like if she becomes like (Buffy reference) Buffy's Xander or Angel's Cordelia.
ReplyDeleteAnother scene that made it until the very last cuts. It's impossible to narrow down to just 11 scenes with these great episodes. You're always missing something. I really enjoyed hearing Roy open up a bit about his parents and I like especially how his character is growing.
ReplyDeleteThe best for me is the last scene: The new name for Oliver. :D Arrow or Green Arrow?
ReplyDeleteBTW Felicity FTW. :3 She' so amazing! One of the best character on the show.
ReplyDeleteThe episodic press releases for episodes two and three refer to Oliver as "The Arrow" so I'm assuming that's his new moniker.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see that she will still be featured. At first I thought maybe they would send her off to prison never to be seen again. I hope he goes to her frequently about Queen Consolidated.
ReplyDeleteI don't care who Oliver gets with now or in the end, but I do think they need to get over Felicity's crush talk. What started out as cute last season feels creepy stalker now, especially since they know each other better and more importantly because Felicity is a great character in her own right. They don't need to keep heading in this direction when they have shown she is so much more than that. Time for them to truly be partners in Team Arrow.
ReplyDeleteYou know a show is doing something right when it is hard to choose the best scene because so many of them are so good. :-)
ReplyDeleteI would love to see more DIggle and Felicity sans Oliver scenes as well. I'd like to think they are still training together and with Felicity more active in the operations, surely they will be working side by side more often. I agree that everything Moira was stellar.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Felicity's character as well. I love how she has grown so much from the first time we met her and I look forward to seeing what she can do as she is really challenged this season. I would actually like to see her take lead in the planning of some of their missions, using her brains to be a vital component both on and off the field, so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI went w/Dig and Felicity meeting Oliver on the Island, and Roy's line about having good hearing instead of being tall. I almost went w/Felicity's coconut line though :-)
ReplyDeleteI also like Isabel's line about majoring in dropping out of college.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Isabel line was "Winning is my thing."
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be most people's favorite. I love how they started the episode with action and humor. That's the Arrow 1-2 punch I really like.
ReplyDeleteThat was a good one too!
ReplyDeleteMe too! It was a great premiere! I'm really excited about the season!
ReplyDeleteI was stuck on this so I went with 'Other' so I could just point out a couple of my favorite scenes and a couple of my favorite quotes.
ReplyDeleteThe initial scene on the island was awesome! So funny!
I'm going to add that I loved when Black Canary saved Roy. I can't wait to see more of her!
I really loved when Walter came in and saved the day. I really like the guy so it's nice to see him again.
I thought all of Thea's sceens were great! She really showed some good character development, especially when she was defending her mom against the Hoods (you could see the light bulb going off when she was doing that) and when she visited Moira. That scene was awesome and adorable!
And I also really liked the island flashback. I find it interesting that until now the flashbacks and current time have pretty much shared a similar theme. But this episode marked a real difference between island!Oliver and present!Oliver. Now that he wants to be a hero he is more careful not to kill people outright (making his scene with the kidnappers very poignant) but on the island it marked his first cold-blooded kill. Both are definitely turning points for him and I love seeing the contrast!
As for the quotes, Felicity is a goldmine of wonderful quotes, the flashback scene where Slade loves his job ^_^, "If I hug you, are they going to shoot us?" That was just plain awesome! And Moira's crack about bankruptcy.
All in all this was a really great episode because usually I don't have such a hard time as this deciding!!
~:A:~
Best scene: None of the above. It was clearly Black Canary coming in out of nowhere and destroying three thugs to save Roy.
ReplyDeleteHa! I have a feeling she will have plenty of scenes to vote for in episodes to come.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you say about the island flashback being totally opposite of what Oliver is trying to be now. I think that made the scene even more harsh and startling to me.
ReplyDeleteLoved the beginning scene when they jumped out the plane and Ollie saves Felicity. Other was Ollie saving Felicity from the 4 Hoods, i really did love that window scene. As for fav. quote, as I said before the coconut line, the "If it's online i can find it." And Thea's " I control your paycheck and your sex life."
ReplyDeleteany1 else think that joke roy made about having good hearing was a subtle nod to his days on Teen Wolf?
ReplyDeleteI never thought of that but now it makes that line even better. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy problem with Felicity's online quote is that it made her seem like a crrepy stalker again and she is so much more than that. I'd like to see them grow out of using these type lines.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see that at all. I just took it as she's a hacker/geek, it's what she does. Being at the computer she multitasks. I wouldn't say it was "stalking".
ReplyDeleteWhen taken with the "sweaty" and salmon run comments, it paints a picture of Felicity that I don't care for. I could see people thinking it was cute in the beginning when she didn't know Oliver at all and had a crush on him from far away. Now she works with him, knows him a lot better, and is asking to be an equal part of Team Arrow. These comments are no longer appropriate and don't correspond with the character growth Felicity has shown since midseason 1. For me they come off more as sexual harassment and pathetic than anything and I like Felicity too much for that.
ReplyDeletetechnically he was only a werewolf for like 2 minutes out of a single episode but meh, it still fits as a subtle nod to the show itself.
ReplyDeleteWell if he grows a tail and suddenly fears swimming, we'll know what to look for. :-P
ReplyDeleteWhoaaa!! you're thinking of it way too much, and taking it wayyy too far. It's not too uncommon for two people to work together and for one or both, to gain attraction to one another. And ok, so she comments on his looks or w/e, but she's not THROWING herself at him or saying anything remotely inappropriate. And b/c she knows him better, her feelings have probably gotten a lot more stronger. There's nothing pathetic about that. She may comment on some things here and then, but she NEVER crosses the line, she knows where she stands with him, but i don't see it in the wrong to express herself. Instead of holding it in and letting it eat her alive and drive her crazy. If she crossed the line or if Oliver felt uncomfortable about it in any way, he would say something, or tell her hey, you and i are friends, i'm in love with Laurel, it'll never happen between us, etc etc. I don't see why her still having a crush on Oliver has to lack to her character growth. If anything i see her crush towards Oliver more of a character growth. She stands beside him, she supports him, looks out for him, helps him out when he can't help himself. She keeps a level head. And she stands up to him and treats him as an equal, and he's sees her as one. If you like Felicity a lot then try to read between the lines, when she makes comments about Oliver, and see how much her feelings, have helped her to become a better person for herself and for Oliver.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of this is over thinking. I think it's a bad case of the writers pandering to a vocal group of the online fandom to the detriment of both the character and the show. I am fine if Felicity has a crush on Oliver, but I would expect her to behave in a more professional manner and for the writers to not have her saying things that make her look like an idiot when she is not one.
ReplyDeleteThe writers never succumb to the fandom, they go with their ideas, and their ideas only. Sure they know what the fans want, but that doesn't mean they get it. Not right away, writers do what they feel is right. Hell, if they listened to the fans at all, shows would be canceled left and right. I don't think flattery makes anyone look like an idiot( unless they do it really really badly for ex. Ross Gellar with the pizza delivery girl). Oliver is completely blind to the fact tbh, He has no idea, and why? B/c Felicity doesn't cross boundaries. And professional manner?? Let's talk about that for a minute. B/c if anyone needs to maintain some type of decorum it's Oliver. He's been working with Laurel as The Hood, but yet screws her on the side? How is that suttle? Just b/c they have history, idt that should give him a pass. He says he wants to protect her, keep her at arms length, yet he lets his feelings get in the way, and now she's on the hunt? And before that there was Helena. So he himself mixes business with pleasure. Not to mention i see some very unwanted friction between him and Summer Glau's character, (w/e her character's name is, i really don't care for her) she's already giving him googly eyes.(I really hope they don't hook up) So you see it's not just Felicity. She's not even on the same playing field as Ollie. She gives comments here and there, but never would she make a move. I find it cute, not idiotic. I guess we just see it differently. But when someone new comes along, i'm sure we won't be hearing her cute comments towards Ollie for a while.
ReplyDeleteIf Oliver said the same kinds of things to Felicity as Felicity says to him, everyone would be roasting him for being a sexist pig. If the introduciton of Barry Gordon will get this to stop, then I say bring him on.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that "sexist pig" comment. But let's see what Barry can bring to the table. The Flash has always been a charmer after all.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mind the online comment; it's the sort of thing that if said by a male character like McGee on NCIS would demonstrate his self-confidence and awesome computer abilities. And while I can sort of give the salmon ladder a pass (Felicity standing in for the audience), I thought stroking Oliver's sweaty shoulder was icky. Too much audience fanservice.
ReplyDeleteFelicity is the character who got me into watching this show fannishly, as opposed to living wallpaper, so I'm kind of worried about how they will be writing her this season. One of the hardest things on a TV series is to write a relationship from UST into something real, and the shows that have managed it successfully can be counted on one hand. (So far so good on Castle) I can understand Kreisberg and Guggenheim wanting to play up Felicity's crush on Oliver because it and she got so much comment last season, but I hope they know to pull it back so it doesn't ruin Felicity. Optimistically, maybe it's all planned and it's her realizing that she's ruining her relationship with Oliver that sends her to Barry Allen.
