The Killing - Cancelled once again
Sep 11, 2013
Cancelled ShowsAMC has canceled The Killing for the second time.
"We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with a fourth season of The Killing. We want to thank our great partners at Fox TV, creator Veena Sud, an extraordinary cast and the dedicated fans who watched".
After its revival, the third season of The Killing was largely in line with the second in ratings. Season 3 opened to a steady 1.8 million viewers (563,000 adults 18-49), dipped in the middle before rising back up to 1.5 million viewers in its summer finale. That number bested the sophomore run's finale, but was still a long way from the record 2.7 million viewers that first tuned in to the drama when it opened on April 3, 2011.
"Fox TV is extremely proud of all three seasons of The Killing. We're especially gratified to have orchestrated a unique deal with AMC for season three that included a bold partnership with Netflix. While we would have loved to produce a fourth season for AMC, we're immensely grateful to everyone involved with this moving series : our brilliant cast, led by Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman and Peter Sarsgaard, our stellar executive producer, Veena Sud, a remarkable writing and producing team, and a tireless, dedicated crew. Most of all, we thank the terrific fans of The Killing, who communicated their appreciation for the show throughout its run".
The Killing, which lost viewers' trust after failing to answer its central "Who killed Rosie Larsen?" question during its freshman season, returned for a second season to see its ratings fall nearly 30%, drawing the ax at AMC. Following a deal with Fox, AMC and Netflix, the series was revived for a rebooted third season featuring a new case and largely new cast (only Enos and Kinnaman returned). The series concluded season three's central case during its finale, serving as closure compared with its freshman run.
For AMC's part, the cabler has drama pilot Line of Sight starring David Morrissey in the works. The network recently ordered to series 1980s computer drama Halt & Catch Fire starring Lee Pace as well as period drama Turn, based on the book Washington's Spies from Nikita's Craig Silverstein.
This summer, AMC will bid critical darling Breaking Bad farewell and will close the book on Mad Men in 2014. Freshman cop drama Low Winter Sun has failed to hold on to much of its Breaking Bad lead-in, which doesn't bode well for a second season.
Source.
The road is wide open for Hell on Wheels (which is currently airing on Saturdays) to get a fourth season then.
One could have imagined that Low Winter Sun's less than stellar ratings would have insured another season of The Killing, a steady performer which fared decently this summer and got better reviews, but AMC seems to have a lot of faith in upcoming new series Turn and Hell & Catch Fire.

ReplyDeleteAw, dang it. I liked season three and was hoping they'd squeak out a fourth. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteAMC bad move, season three was excellent one of the best seasons I watched this year.
ReplyDeleteOMG...is it bad that I literally busted out laughing when I read the title. But I liked the 3rd season and am sad to hear there won't be another one.
ReplyDeleteWishing good things for Joel and Mireille and their future movie careers!!! Though I will miss them working together, their chemistry is the best!
This is too bad, season three was the best IMO, the worst part is that it ended on a huge cliffhanger, I would've preferred an ending like S2 in this case....
ReplyDeleteNo surprises there, that deson't mean the third season wasn't an improvement when compared to the rest.
ReplyDeleteAw, damn it. Oh well.
ReplyDeletedisappointing as I did give up on S2, but was curious and checked out S3 and thought that they did an outstanding job all the way around this season. I look forward to seeing what new projects the cast will have soon - I know Holder will be the new Robocop, can't wait to see if robocop will ever wear a hoodie... lol
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed season 3 (and 1), so I´m really sad that they cancelled it. Mostly because I really liked the actors. Hopefully they will be cast in another great show.
ReplyDeleteare u fucking kidding me
ReplyDeleteAMC I really start to hate u
This really sucks. I loved Season 3 and I love Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. Especially together as lead! Really hope they get a new tv lead role soon. I don't get it. Wished there was some other network that would pick it up.
ReplyDeleteNooooooooo! :'( Holder! Linden! That ending!! :'(((
ReplyDeleteOK this is what I was wanting to see, have not watched most of S3 and with a cliffhanger ending, now I will not. I hate when they do that.
ReplyDeleteCancelled once again Bahahaha! Thanks for the laughter Bunky! You could not have written that in a better way! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I'm sad for the fans.
P.S. The show's name is Halt and Catch Fire, not Hell.
actually, season 3 was given closure. i hope this isnt a spoiler for u, but the cliffhanger 'Aylass01' is referring to is simply, what the future held for the 2 leads. but other than that, the case was solved.
ReplyDeleteSo we're left with Linden executing a suspect, Holden screaming NO! no no no no, and we'll never know how Linden gets out of this one. We'll have to imagine. (She spends a brief time in jail, marries Holden, they live happily ever after. Okay, now I'm happy).
ReplyDeleteOK thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. Season 3 was good.
ReplyDeleteThis means AMC is not renewing the show right? Does this mean Fox TV and Netflix can continue the series? Even if it's technically possible, there isn't much chance of that I guess.
Nope. Not much chance. I'm going to take this cancellation as an opportunity to believe that Linden got away with murdering someone.
ReplyDeletejubjub is right, I was talking about the main characters, not the case, that was solved, sorry for the confusion. Nevertheless, season 3 was great until the very end, my advice would be that you finish it, but that's up to you of course.
ReplyDeleteThank you, that's exactly what I was talking about. :D
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the first 2 seasons, so will go with the rest of s3 that I have on my DVR..thanks for the update.
ReplyDeleteSo disappointed. It seems so unfair. I really think season 3 was the best season, so I was very surprised by the lack of interest or curiosity from viewers about The Killing this year. It just reminds me the cancellation of Life, 3 (4 ?) years ago.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I really enjoyed it and I was hoping for a fourth season after this amazing season finale.
I'm really sad today for Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, I hope that they will find new tv shows asap because I'm already looking forward to watch it!
Shame... but I am not completely surprised by the news.
