Rizzoli and Isles - Season 5 - Janet Tamaro steps down as showrunner

Sep 14, 2013

Janet Tamaro, who has overseen the procedural since its 2010 debut, will step down after the end of the current fourth season of TNT's top drama, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The remaining four episodes are scheduled to air in early 2014.

She is expected to stay on as a consultant for season five, slated for a 2014 premiere. A new showrunner has not yet been named.

With Tamaro transitioning from day-to-day responsibilities on Rizzoli & Isles, she will focus her attention on developing new projects.

  1. This show is already going to be in transition given Lee Thompson Young's death. Losing its original showrunner makes things even more shaky.

  2. Yes, but maybe this is just the reason of her leaving. Aproaching it from a positive side: if a show needs some revamp because of major forces (plus I think it needed some revamp anyhow, though YMMV), it is not necessary a bad sign if the showrunner is changed.

From the wording and the tone of the announcement it seems to me that she wasn't forced. More like as if she couldn't find the grip of the new setup, or didn't agreed with the suggested ones on the level that she could do it the best way. It's better to be a new one to do it wholeheartedly. She remains with the show, which means to me that she can and willing to help the transitions - which hopefully will be successful.

  3. I agree that this could be just what Rizzoli and Isles needs. Quite frankly, I think a shakeup would be good for the show; however, it still makes me nervous when 2 major things happen to a show at once.

  4. I like the show but I have never been satisfied with the quality of storytelling on Rizzoli & Isles, especially in the last one and a half seasons or so. I'm looking at this as an opportunity for an upgrade at the helm. The chance to front one of the biggest scripted shows on cable should be quite attractive to some top quality showrunners.

  5. I like R & I but find it largely indistinguishable from all the other crime procedurals on the air. If the new showrunner adds to the storytelling then I am all for it.
