Ratings Breakdown:
Erosion was the key observation, with each of the four networks down in the overnights versus the comparable year-ago period. But the New England Patriots at the Atlanta Falcons on “Sunday Night Football” led NBC to an easy opening Sunday victory with an estimated 13.5 rating/22 share from 8:30-11:30 p.m. One year earlier, the NY Giants versus the Philadelphia Eagles averaged a 15.5/25 in the overnights, which translated into 22.76 million viewers and a 9.0 rating/23 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). In other words, NBC owns week one of the new TV season in the key demos.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was “Football Night in America” at a 1.8/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#4), a 4.1/ 7 (#2) at 7:30 p.m. and a dominant 8.6/14 in the 8 p.m. half-hour.

In series-premiere news, ABC drama “Betrayal” was DOA with a distant last-place 3.5/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed the launch of failed year-ago occupant “666 Park Avenue” (5.3/ 9 on 9/30/12) by a hefty 34 percent, with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Revenge” (5.1/ 8) of a sluggish 69 percent. And that 5.3 in the overnights for “666 Park Avenue” translated into 6.90 million viewers and a 2.1/ 5 among adults 18-49.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was 7 p.m. recap special “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: Journey to Neverland” at a third-place 3.4/ 6. Next was the third season-premiere of “Once Upon a Time” at a third-place 5.2/ 8 from 8-9.m., which slid by 28 percent from its year-ago season-opener (7.1/11 on 9/30/12), followed by the third season-premiere of aforementioned “Revenge” at a 5.3/ 8 (#3) from 9-10 p.m. One year earlier, then relocated “Revenge” also opened notably stronger with a 6.6/10 on 9/30/12. The bottom line: Consider this a disappointing opening Sunday for ABC.

Over at CBS, the overnight results are estimated due to an approximate 15-minute late start caused by a football overrun, which scored a 7.5/13.

Eye net granddaddy “60 Minutes” opened season 46 with an approximate 8.2/14 (#2) from 7:15-8:15 p.m., which was 11 percent below the 9.2/15 one year earlier. Next was the season-premiere of “The Amazing Race” at a 6.0/ 9 from 8:15-9:15 p.m., which was 12 percent beneath the year-ago opener (6.8/10 on 9/30/12), followed by the fifth season-premiere of older-skewing “The Good Wife” at a 6.4/10 (#2) from 9:15-10:15 p.m. (-14 percent from the year-ago opener) and the sixth season-premiere of “The Mentalist” at a 6.3/11 (#2) from 10:15-11:15 p.m. (-10 percent). The bottom-line: Erosion is never good, but CBS’ is not as severe as ABC.

Fox opened the evening with a huge bump care of an approximate half-hour primetime football overrun at a 15.2/27 in the overnights at 7 p.m., followed by post game “The OT” at a 9.1/16 (#1) at 7:30 p.m.
Next was the quartet animated sitcom 8-10 p.m. season-openers – “The Simpsons” (#4: 4.4/ 7; -23 percent from the year-ago season-premiere), “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 3.0/ 5; -19 percent), “Family Guy” (#4: 3.4/ 5; -24 percent) and “American Dad” (#4: 2.8/ 4; -22 percent). The success (or lack of) of Fox’s animated sitcom block depends, of course, on the young adult demographics, which should all be on the downside due to the diminished overnights. Stay tuned.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. Poor ABC, Lucky 7 and Betrayal are huge flop.

    ReplyDelete
  2. ABC hasn't had a hit in the Sunday at 10 slot since Brothers and Sisters. I still miss that show.

    ReplyDelete
  3. So Revenge grew out of OUAT? wow, that has never happened before.
I hope the demographics are good; though down from the last season openers, it seems that both shows did considerably better than they did in spring, which could be good. If the season is good for both then they should be able to keep good ratings

    ReplyDelete
  4. Was expecting a little bit higher for Revenge. Hopefully it will go up next week since there is no major competition.

    ReplyDelete
  5. They really should've given it a final season. :(.

    ReplyDelete
  6. With Breaking Bad out of the way, hopefully Revenge will go up next week. That was a really good premiere! It also outgrew Once? That's great!! Should this be a great season, Revenge could have a success story this season for best comeback!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Was expecting higher rating for Once.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sunday nights are just too crowded really not just the main networks but the cable channels as well.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm surprised too given it went up against the series finale.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Definitely. Too many story lines they could have continued. Oh well, that's in the past I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So true, they could spread them out a bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Need an extra day of the week!

    ReplyDelete
  13. wow, seriously with the downvotes? Somebody must be bored today.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I really do not understand the doggedness with Betrayal... If the series was on the cable, the critics would not have been so harsh, because let's be honest... the pilot was quite good !

    ReplyDelete
  15. for me the most crowded is thursday nights 6 of my shows are on friday and thats not including ones that have yet to come back on

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have always believed that an extra day, a "Super Sunday" would solve all of humanity's problems

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't think it has to do with being on cable or broadcast, for instance I've seen some pretty dire and hard reviews about Low Winter Sun, which is on AMC.
Haven't seen Betrayal yet so I can't say if it's good or not, but I don't think that being on a network ot another really defines the kind of critic it gets

    ReplyDelete
  18. Revenge usually skews older than Once though so in 18-49 ratings, I still think Once will have higher ratings than Revenge.

    ReplyDelete
  19. They also have SHIELD and I hope Once in Wonderland opens well too. It still has the potential to be a better year for their dramas than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hope they don't cancel mentalist...I wish the wrap storyline within 2seasobs...I don't to see one of my fav.shows canceled

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well the show itself is a cable show, not a network show. The original series is a really great show but we can't have an opinion about it with just one episode... That's the problem and Betrayal seems to follow the same trajectory than the original version, so it's quite impossible to have a fair opinion about the show with just the pilot. :/

    ReplyDelete
  22. Actually, both skew about the same, OUAT just always had a bigger audience. Example:
    OUAT- 7 million viewers, 2.2
    Revenge- 6 million viewers, 1.7
It's not really that far, and if Revenge performs with the same or higher viewership than OUAT it's not crazy to think that they could have the same 18-49 rating or even slightly edging it (though I don't believe it will happen like this). It probably will come out like this:
    OUAT: 8 million viewers, 2.7
    Revenge: 8 million viewers, 2.6

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agree, Breaking Bad finale must have mustered some really big ratings, considering its final season went insanely high rating wise.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So did everything lose except fotball and CBS shows.because this Is very sad news.Sorry CBS fans but you have no shows I am intrested In.

    ReplyDelete
  25. that was one of the best choices ABC ever made

    ReplyDelete
  26. Too bad they couldn't have done it last year before all the damage but yeah

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was thinking this may be the last season. Just where story is going alone, it doesn't seem a terrible place to wrap up, as sad as I would be. I'd just prefer it to go out around 8-9mil instead of falling further.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So Breaking Bad probably did better than all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yep, BB will smash all these ratings. It will probably be in the high 3's or low 4's for 18-49

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hope OuaT and Revenge don't fall too much in the upcoming weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. From the comments section in tvbtn:

    ABC – Revenge (season premiere)
    Viewers: 8.35 million (#3), A18-49: 2.5/ 6 (#2)

    9:30 p.m.

    ABC – Revenge (season premiere)
    Viewers: 7.72 million (#3), A18-49: 2.3/ 5 (#2)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Because of the last minute of breaking bad ?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not the greatest start for OUAT and Revenge, but it's not as bad as The Mentalist. It's a shame, since this season certainly looks like it can be the one yet.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Glad to see both OUAT and Revenge built on their finale numbers! Especially impressive for Revenge's ratings to be so close to OUAT's too! Both shows are pretty much guaranteed renewals for season 4 though anyway, barring any major ratings disasters.

    ReplyDelete
  35. OUAT has better ratings and a bigger fanbase than Nashville. Overall ABC has enough problems with some of his new shows so I think the "old" shows are safe for now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree, but what worries me about OUAT is that, unlike Nashville, it consistently lost viewers throughout the 2nd season and apparently hasn't improved a lot on the premiere. Fair enough, this Sunday was atypical, there were several premieres and a huge series finale, but still, from a business point of view, ABC should invest more on something that is growing and gaining viewers than on something that stagnated.

It's too soon to say what will happen to any of the shows, they're all in their first or second week, and I've been watching OUAT from the beginning, so I don't want it to get cancelled, but I am not very confident, to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's too soon to say, but I wouldn't bet on them canceling TGW this season, unless they have really awful ratings. Even if it is not the sensation it once was, the show still gets a lot of buzz for CBS, being one of their only good dramas. And, let's face it, ratings have dropped because viewers are unstable beings, not because the show is bad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wish all networks adopted the "split seasons" model. The two weeks on, three weeks off, three weeks on, two weeks off schedules drive viewers crazy and seriously erode the ratings. It's much better to treat the season as two halves, each one a story on its own that airs back-to-back with no interruptions. The midseason premiere can have a brief recap of the first half to bring the audience up to speed/refresh its memory. A lot of shows, especially serialized ones, have suffered from the current model that makes it impossible to follow a show *cough* Nikita *cough... actually, I'll just shed a tear instead.*

    ReplyDelete
  39. "ABC should invest more on something that is growing and gaining viewers than on something that stagnated."

ABC has some shows without buzz but with somewhat stabile ratings. I don't think the network has the courage and the concept for a rebuild. ABC wants to hold what they have.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nashville is a show that should've been cancelled last year, it won't reach season 3 with those ratings, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Your right, there really isn't anywhere else to put them...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Its sad that the demo number is more important the actual viewers. I don't see how a show with fewer people watching has better chances at renewals then a show with more people watching. I now it sounds naive but shouldn't the most important thing be how many people are watching the show not how old they are?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Can't see a table. The space where it should be is blank. It's the same when I want to see the Full Season. I use the latest version of Firefox. Didn't have problems in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's normally due to a corrupt cookie. Try clearing your Cookies out in your Browser and then load the page again. The table should display then.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank you, it worked :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. But can't they move the show to a different night? Back to Tuesday nights, for instance, that would be much better than the Sunday night massacres. :/
Alternatively, isn't changing networks also an option? The current number of viewers should be perfectly satisfactory for smaller networks.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Looks like last season's awful writing chased many OUAT viewers away, They just better hope this season doesn't lose viewers at a horrific rate over the course of the season like season 2. Otherwise I doubt the show will last once they get enough episodes for syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In terms of quality I agree; OUAT had a not so good second half, while Revenge became insanely good after a slow start. I expected OUAT to do better because it usually gets more buzz. Anyway, couldn't be happier to see Revenge performing this good! Also, 8 million viewers for both shows is good viewership! Even when total viewhership doesn't count, it's still nice to see xD
