Ratings Breakdown:
Erosion was the key observation, with each of the four networks down in the overnights versus the comparable year-ago period. But the New England Patriots at the Atlanta Falcons on “Sunday Night Football” led NBC to an easy opening Sunday victory with an estimated 13.5 rating/22 share from 8:30-11:30 p.m. One year earlier, the NY Giants versus the Philadelphia Eagles averaged a 15.5/25 in the overnights, which translated into 22.76 million viewers and a 9.0 rating/23 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). In other words, NBC owns week one of the new TV season in the key demos.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was “Football Night in America” at a 1.8/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#4), a 4.1/ 7 (#2) at 7:30 p.m. and a dominant 8.6/14 in the 8 p.m. half-hour.
In series-premiere news, ABC drama “Betrayal” was DOA with a distant last-place 3.5/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed the launch of failed year-ago occupant “666 Park Avenue” (5.3/ 9 on 9/30/12) by a hefty 34 percent, with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Revenge” (5.1/ 8) of a sluggish 69 percent. And that 5.3 in the overnights for “666 Park Avenue” translated into 6.90 million viewers and a 2.1/ 5 among adults 18-49.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was 7 p.m. recap special “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: Journey to Neverland” at a third-place 3.4/ 6. Next was the third season-premiere of “Once Upon a Time” at a third-place 5.2/ 8 from 8-9.m., which slid by 28 percent from its year-ago season-opener (7.1/11 on 9/30/12), followed by the third season-premiere of aforementioned “Revenge” at a 5.3/ 8 (#3) from 9-10 p.m. One year earlier, then relocated “Revenge” also opened notably stronger with a 6.6/10 on 9/30/12. The bottom line: Consider this a disappointing opening Sunday for ABC.
Over at CBS, the overnight results are estimated due to an approximate 15-minute late start caused by a football overrun, which scored a 7.5/13.
Eye net granddaddy “60 Minutes” opened season 46 with an approximate 8.2/14 (#2) from 7:15-8:15 p.m., which was 11 percent below the 9.2/15 one year earlier. Next was the season-premiere of “The Amazing Race” at a 6.0/ 9 from 8:15-9:15 p.m., which was 12 percent beneath the year-ago opener (6.8/10 on 9/30/12), followed by the fifth season-premiere of older-skewing “The Good Wife” at a 6.4/10 (#2) from 9:15-10:15 p.m. (-14 percent from the year-ago opener) and the sixth season-premiere of “The Mentalist” at a 6.3/11 (#2) from 10:15-11:15 p.m. (-10 percent). The bottom-line: Erosion is never good, but CBS’ is not as severe as ABC.
Fox opened the evening with a huge bump care of an approximate half-hour primetime football overrun at a 15.2/27 in the overnights at 7 p.m., followed by post game “The OT” at a 9.1/16 (#1) at 7:30 p.m.
Next was the quartet animated sitcom 8-10 p.m. season-openers – “The Simpsons” (#4: 4.4/ 7; -23 percent from the year-ago season-premiere), “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 3.0/ 5; -19 percent), “Family Guy” (#4: 3.4/ 5; -24 percent) and “American Dad” (#4: 2.8/ 4; -22 percent). The success (or lack of) of Fox’s animated sitcom block depends, of course, on the young adult demographics, which should all be on the downside due to the diminished overnights. Stay tuned.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the
Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
