On your mark, get set…go! The 2013-14 TV season has officially begun and our perennial daily overnight household analysis (complete with predictions in total viewers and demographic deliveries) is a precursor to what lies ahead once the fast national, live plus same day and live plus seven day data is available. This is your sneak peak and your first look, but not the final assessment. That said…
ABC and NBC opened the new season tied for No. 1 in the overnights, but NBC’s combination of the season-premiere of “The Voice” and the series-premiere of “The Blacklist” will win the evening with ease in all key demographics. Two-hours of “The Voice” scored a 9.2 rating/14 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was a close second behind competing “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC (9.4/14). Comparably, that was 12 percent above two hours of “The Voice” on the year-ago evening, which translated into 12.18 million viewers and s 4.4 rating/11 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data).
“The Blacklist” at 10 p.m., meanwhile, opened with a dominant 8.0/13, which bested the series-premiere of sure-to-be older skewing “Hostages” on CBS (#3: 5.1/ 9) by a considerable 57 percent. Second in the 10 p.m. hour was the season-premiere of ABC’s “Castle” at a 7.4/12, which was equal to the year-ago opener. Comparably, “The Blacklist” was right on par with the series-premiere of former time period occupant “Revolution” (7.9/13 on 9/16/12), with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (9.5/14) of a respectable 84 percent. And the debut of “Revolution” translated into 11.65 million viewers and a 4.1/11 among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data).
Congratulations to NBC, which is off to the strongest start in the new season.
ABC, of course, should also breathe a sigh of relief given the solid overnights for aforementioned “Dancing With the Stars (which dropped by 10 percent from one year earlier: 9.4/14 vs. 10.4/15) and “Castle.” But CBS is no longer the Monday powerhouse it once was.
The positive news for the Eye net was the one-hour season-premiere of “How I Met Your Mother” at a decent third-place 6.5/10 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which is expected to translate into a mid-to-high 3-rating among adults 18-49 (and is a vast improvement over the DOA results for failed “Partners” at 8:30 p.m. one year earlier). While the series-debut of sitcom “Mom” at 9:30 p.m. held 92 percent of the “2 Broke Girls” lead-in, a third-place 6.0/ 9 for “2 Broke Girls” at 9 p.m. was 12 percent below its year-ago season-opener (6.8/10 on 9/24/12). And a 5.5/ 8 for the launch of “Mom” at 9:30 p.m. (#4) was 13 percent below the season-premiere of “Mike & Molly” one year earlier (6.3/ 9 on 9/24/12). Both comedies, unfortunately, could finish third among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m. (behind “The Voice” and week two of “Sleepy Hollow” on Fox). And this was not the type of opening levels CBS would have liked to see for “Mom.” Flop, no. But disappointing, yes.
“Hostages” at 10 p.m., however, is a huge disappointment with its aforementioned last-place 5.1/ 9 at 10 p.m. down 11 percent from the season-premiere of former time period occupant “Hawaii Five-O” on the year-ago evening (5.7/ 9 on 9/24/12). Given the ample promotion and considering most new shows drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, consider this a “losing” performance for the “Hostages” opener.
When you assess CBS’ Monday performance this season, keep in mind that this is the final season for “How I Met Your Mother.”
Fox finished fourth overall in the overnights, but there was surprising positive news for week two of drama “Sleepy Hollow,” which at a respectable fourth-place 5.7/ 8 from 9-10 p.m. was 19 percent above lead-in “Bones” (#4: 4.8/ 7 at 8 p.m.). And the 5.7 in the household overnights was only seven percent below the 6.1/ 9 it launched with in the less competitive environment one week earlier (which translated into 10.10 million viewers and a 3.5/ 9 among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data).
Last-place The CW ducked the opening season competition with encore telecasts of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.4/ 1) and two episodes of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (#5, avg. 0.5/ 1 from 9-10 p.m.).

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the
Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
