At least Dexter had two outstanding seasons, and two seasons that benefited a lot from their "special guest star" (John Lithgrow in particular, but also Ray Stevenson).

The writing in Season 6 and 8 was equally awful, but since S8 was the final season its awfulness was worse. 5 and 7 was basically a tie

ReplyDeleteI think it's supposed to be relative. A bad season of Dexter is still a better season than a lot of seasons from other shows. It's just "bad" in the content of Dexter. For instance, even though I thought that seasons 3 and 6 had their moments, I thought they were really inferior to everything else Dexter did, particularly season 6, which really bugged me. It doesn't mean individually I wouldn't watch them, it just means they were worse for me than the others. That's how I took it anyway.

ReplyDeleteHowever, that was my ranking pre-series finale. The series finale makes me want to drop 8 at least down between 7 and 5, but I'm not sure on that one just yet.
I am in the ninth episode of season 4 and for me the best one until now has been the 1, and 2 comes in a close second place! Eveybody says that the forth is the best one, lets wait but until now i still prefer the first with the whole ice truck killer story!

ReplyDeleteI thought that too, except that you are suppose to downvote the ones you did not like, which is why I asked. For me I always felt each season tired to compartmentalize itself, but also changed perspectives on the subject matter.

Season 1 (foundation needed for full series)
Season 5 (Most hopeful season)
Season 8 (Most transformative season + many characters I love)
Season 7 (Most fun season + look at ever changing antagonists)
Season 4 (Climatic season, great story/performance + major tragedy)
Season 6 (Underrated much needed internal bridging season to set the end on course)
Season 2 (similar to season one, but gives Dexter first taste of real tragedy)
Season 3 (characters good, but story just ok)

ReplyDeleteI'll have to watch some seasons again, but right now it's something like this:
ReplyDeleteSeason 1 - When I first watched the first few episodes, I didn't like the show much. Then I watched the first season one episode a day, and when I saw that finale twist, I loved the show. The various ''murder'' storylines are all a lot of fun, Dexter's relationship with Rita is great (especially in 1.08, when he realizes he really, really wants to have sex with her) and the Ice Truck Killer storyline is still the best the show has been.
Season 2 - Could be listed at #1 too... So much excitement so early on. Dexter is the main bad guy, and watching him go against Frank Lundy (!!) was so great. Lila was very annoying, but she was supposed to be, and Dexter's relationship with her felt very relevant at the time. Then there's the storyline with Doakes, and the great conversations he has with Dexter near the season's end. It's awesome.
Season 4 - This is where they started throwing stupid storylines at us (Batista/LaGuerta), but it wasn't that bad yet. Trinity really made up for it, as did the mystery surrounding the shooting of Debra and Lundy. Everything was connected and very well thought out. Oh, and there was so much awkward. Dexter trying to be a family man was hilarious. Then there was that absolute gut punch of an ending that was so bold and so good.
Season 3 - A very good season as well. Very underrated! I might have switched it with season 4, but the Skinner storyline and the introduction of Quinn (with that horrible Yuki something) were pretty boring storylines. Miguel Prado, however... I loved watching that strange friendship between him and Dexter, and watching the two of them at war at the end was so much fun. ''I will fuck you back in ways you never even imagined!''
Season 7 - So satisfying, especially after season 6. Debra/Dexter was EXACTLY what I wanted it to be. Isaak Sirko was a sweet surprise so late in the game. LaGuerta working on the BHB case in secret was great, and it ended with a bang. Enter Hannah McKay, who just didn't work out at all. It was boring, and the death of the Dark Passenger was a horrible twist (''If there's no Dark Passenger, then I'm responsible''??! Like he ever believed that he and the DP were separate beings!).
Season 5 - The ''Team Rapist'' storyline wasn't that exciting; the kill scenes were very.. standard and unexciting. But I do love Lumen, and I wished that it had been her in season 8! Dexter reacting to Rita's death, taking care of the kids (the ''Teenage Wasteland'' ep!), interacting with Jordan Chase, Quinn/Liddy going after Dexter... Great stuff, but a bit pointless in the long run because the producers pretended like this season had never happened! And that whole Santa Muerte thing that they just dropped halfway through the season... That was bad.
Season 6 - Well, this season did have Mike Anderson. Remember that guy? And we had Debra as lieutenant, which was fun. Ok, so the Gellar twist was the worst thing ever. DDK was way too over the top, not to mention, well, stupid. Debra loves Dexter, ugh. Nebraska, ugh. Brother Sam was sort of fun, but then he was dead. I wish this had been the show's worst though, because...
Season 8 - I sort of liked the first four episodes. After that, the show was less than a bad parody. It was a completely different thing. Of all the things they could have done with this final season, they did absolutely nothing for about 10 episodes. Please, let a different writing team try again next year.
