Wow. That was a really amazing first episode. I definitely think out of all the 'first' episodes I've seen so far the Mentalist was my absolute fav so far. :)
Lisbon! She should have known better than to go in that house alone. Argh. She told Jane she understood that Red John could set a trap with the GPS then forgets all about that at the end of the episode. Come on!
Knew Brett wasn't Red John. That would have been too obvious and after how clueless he was in this episode I'm not surprised.
If Red John is picking off suspects, I'm starting to think he wants his identity to be found out.
yes please, loved it sooo looking forward to this season. Lisbon's and Jane's fight was long overdue a and I just loved how the entire team found out within no time that was awesome. Can't wait to see how they pick up next episode, Jane's face at the end was priceless
I picked great. Not happy about the different feel. Disjointed because it starts straight from the finale and tone is different. Awesome if Lisbon was dead. Praying to the writing gods she is found killed. Her snarly face was buggin. Jane can't be attracted to it. No I refuse to believe it.
Don't put your own personal feelings into this. IT's very obvious that Jane cares for her, more than anyone else. He would kill a follower of RJ to save her. He would NOT be happier without her. THat much is clear. Just because you don't like her doesn't mean you should put your own prejudices onto another character, especially when they are obviously unwarranted.
I can't agree more. I was in shock when she says I'm going back to Sacramento because I want to stare at a tracker and who the fuck cares about the dead person or the killer who did this crime. She fell off the stupid dump truck and got hit in the face with it too?
Lisbon - is she a friend of RJ or did he get to her because she tells Jane she doesn't care about the crime at the bar and wants to go back to her office. Last seasons she cared about victims. The writers are writing her in a thin line. Hardly believable she could find no PD or LE to go with her.
You and I seem to be on the same page here, because I agree with you, she is the one of the worst cops on television, and I've seen a lot of cop shows. You couldn't ask for a worse friend. She should die for betraying Jane's trust.
It's a TV show where detectives run around in high heels and finger print matches come up in two minutes. Of course she would go into a place with no backup if it is convenient for the plot. It's fiction.
Come on there is the sherrif, local police, cbi agents. She has no idea if the gps will lead her anywhere and she drops a case to go stare at a computer.
What the hell! She should be fired on the spot and lose the RJ case. RJ can get to her easily, turn her and kill her. Why would Jane like her much less love her? She doe not give him a moment of peace, can't let him enjoy eggs and need to "watch HIM". I think it is a clue he should watch her and his back with her. He trusts her and he should not. I'm not a conspiracist who thinks she is RJ but I don't think she is good either. Jane would be miserable in a relationship with Lisbon.
Oh right let's throw stones at her. How dare she she do her job *rolls eyes*
Oh yeah and actually she never promised him to not tell, she's the freaking boss not him and how many times exactly didn't he tell her something and broke her trust him?
@LisaTurnick: "Snarly face" really? You must be one of the most superficial people on earth. Just bc you don't find her attractive doesn't mean she isn't and without ever having seen you from your comment alone I can already tell she's a 1000 times more beautiful then you will ever be.
This fresh Lisbon hate is really amusing to me because it's cropping up now that the woman has finally taken a major stand against Jane.
Folks are so predictable with the misogynistic loathing of female characters who are written to occasionally oppose morally questionable male leads who fans find charming and fun. These women are typically the wives or girlfriends who won't sit down and shut up like good little long suffering ladies.
What's funny about this is that Lisbon is one of the most long suffering women on TV. She always has Jane's back, indulges his nonsense to the point of spinelessness, protects him when he messes up and essentially lets him get away with murder. And that's STILL not good enough for some lady-hating folks.
Even if you leave any potential romantic feelings out of it - any rational fan has to admit that Jane & Lisbon are close friends, so I wonder how the writer's will show the obvious guilt Jane will be experiencing. His reckless behavior led to the SacPD officer getting shot & that led directly to Lisbon not having backup when she really needed it.
You know what I really would NOT care if she is dead. Yeah I would feel bad for Jane but that is it. I think the rushed, dramatic tone of the ep would be better served after the episode that starts from the premiere. She is pissed at Jane for her being a stupid lying ahole. It is NUTS.
I'm sorry does it hurt your feelings that poor stupid Lisbon is such an idiot? It is crazy she even has any fans. Poor you can't face the truth you like an idiotic character who should be dead. Maybe Robin Tunney is sleeping with the boss or a writer because I can't see why she is on screen so much. She is HORRIBLE. You can see why only the indie movies will pay her. After the mentalist, she will be back to no one caring. Robin also whines every chance she gets she works so much. You know she won't leave until it ends because she has no other job offers. Simon works twice as much, has a harder job and I never hear him complain.

You're right. My feelings are hurt. Indie movies are the shit, and it pains me to see them bad-mouthed by an otherwise lovely and well spoken young (I'm thinking... 13 years old?) woman such as yourself.
Lisbon: Jane let's act normal, next breath WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE ISN'T PSYCHIC? YES HE IS. <- stupid comment #10001 I would be embarrassed to be a fan of her Robin has loony eyes.
Yeah they are for now but he will be wanting out of CBI he can live without her very clearly. Who would want a reminder of RJ in their life? She is really the past. Who knows he can be happiest without her. You get close when you work on a goal but it by goes away. I just hope he is not stuck with her and does not settle for her.
It was a great premiere! Lisbon might have done a few mistakes but who doesn't, especially in a stressed situations like this. Plus it was Janes fault all along that she had no backup because he pissed off the sac pd. It looks like this season is going to be epic, I can not wait for the next sunday! i've always wanned RJ to kidnapp lisbon.... so i couldn't be happier!
That was the one negative point in the episode for me--it didn't make sense for Lisbon to go in without backup, knowing that it was a RJ trap. She had to know, otherwise she's pretty dim. Even though the Sac PD wouldn't come, she could have called Cho or something.
That said--maybe Partridge IS Red John and faked the whole scene. ;)
Utterly Pathetically Contrived end. If this episode is to try and ever make Jisbon twu wuv it shows what a mistake it will be because the writing was crap on the relationship front. As a stand alone season premiere, great dark episode but it continues from the season finale! Where is continuity? You can't radically write Lisbon out of character and make it seamless. If Lisbon was a bitch who was obsessed with Red John in the finale the same way as tonight's episode, ok go ahead. (Did I forget her family and kid were killed by RJ?) After the first 10 minutes it was let's have Lisbon act stupid and more stupid as the minutes tick by. To make sure the promo scene with Jane can happen. Jane saying sorry - not in character he would not apologize when he had nothing to say sorry for but I checked he does say sorry for arguing not for his words (still it was mostly her starting an argument and getting arrogant).
Jane was Classic Jane and I appreciated that, smart, sharp and fun. Lisbon was a huge detractor to Jane and a liability. She really helped RJ with her GPS, phone tapping and following Partridge's signal. Her words to Jane at the diner were full of crap. She doesn't use her brain to think oh gee what if it is a trap? She should be out of a job. Why did she want to arrest 7 people? For WHAT? Has she read the Constitution? Can Lisbon just die and I can pretend the writers are ridding the actress asap and it's a botch job? Lisbon was such a dummy, more than the past seasons she made me roll my eyes. Why was she hard up on Jane? More scenes with Partridge was needed.
The episode was dramatic but I could not enjoy it. What was the purpose of 2 cases and RJ in one episode? Wasn't Heller everywhere saying it is serialized, less individual cases. HUH? Take a minute and make RJ season wide and don't write a contrived relationship between the two leads..
Heated here a few hours ago but I will say aside from a personal attack none of the other comments should be deleted. Any disagreement should not be called a troll. The actress in question I do not have the best impressions of. Ms Tunney was drunk as a skunk on the 100th episode interviews and she said she hoped her boobs would help stop Leno from asking her hard questions. Her Ellen interview was weird too. Odd lady. But I don't know her I will stop from speculating further. Frankly I would not want to know her.
I learned everybody but Jane is stupid from the premiere. Grace should be killed off. She would probably make out with RJ as soon as she sees him. If she dies, Lisbon is at fault. She must be fine with losing Grace because she barely blinked telling her the list.
It does match Brett Partridge's voice. It's got that same nasal quality to it and also very clear pronunciation. And I really don't think he is dead! Especially since they made that comment about he (Brett Partridge) having to be pretty good actor if he was Red John. I think that was a hint! And also don't we see him in the ctv promo at the door?
You re right but then I thought it is RJ he could have a gizmo or tapes or whatever. What do you make of head in oven?. I do not want it to be Jane's therapist. But it is Sophie in the fridge pic. The writers need to be careful and not make things or characters extreme to up drama. Let it go naturally. I found a lot of Lisbon's scenes forced and put on for no logical reason. Every choice she made was bad and if I was her I would have done the exact opposite on each choice. Is it an omen Lisbon dies at the end when they catch or kill RJ? I would not mind but I do not want them messing with Jane like that too. I wanted it to be Partridge but how can it be unless he is a twin? I know lot think Bertram is too obvious but he is in the top two for me now.
Well, I am also very happy that Robin Tunney is not going anywhere. And I am quite surprised by all the "hate" (for lack of a better word) that she's been getting in the comments. I think the show is very much defined by Jane and his quest for revenge, as well as by the relationship Jane and Lisbon have (and Lisbon IS Robin Tunney, after 5 years I can't imagine anybody else but her on those shoes).

Exactly THIS! I'm surprised that it comes all out at this point of the story... when Lisbon is a WELL ESTABLISHED character we know from the beginning!
I don´t hate Lisbon or the actress that plays her. Hating the actress would be dumb, cause I never even met the woman.
That said, I think that her telling Grace about the list WILL get her killed, and Grace telling Rigsby will probably get him killed. And I feel that both women should have known better. This is RJ that they are dealing with, not some random lowlife.
true. it was a low point. but it looked like she would have waited if she hadnt head the noise. that aside, i'm glad she followed her instincts and landed in trouble caus now i get to see Jane worried :)
For some reason CBI Ron creeped me out on the ep-like they lingered on him too long when Jane asked had he seen Lisbon. Either he is RJ or is gonna die by him real soon.
The case of the week felt useless and forced, but the actual team interactions were superb. It felt very natural that Lisbon would react the way she did, and the rest of the team sharing the info about the list was just as realistic. I liked Lisbon saying she was scared about how lost Jane seems. It truly looked like he didn't know what to do, because everything he'd attempted in the past, every plan to catch Red John failed. Amazing episode overall, but I wish they'd focus more on the major arc without random cases taking up screentime.
Anyone else noticed when Bertram said "I am many things for many people" ? The clue left by a victim of Red John was an uncompleted sentence "He is man..."
Actually, he sounds a little bit like Kirkland. If you see the episode where they flash back to that first case when Jane got involved with the CBI (I think it is that one) at the end of the episode he is with a woman in a car that looks like a limo, and when he thanks her, he does sound a bit like him (he must be softening his voice for the phone calls though).
To be honest I do think it is a little bit forced, and I am sure that the "Red John" that called Jane into the season 2 finale was Partridge. But he was a minion, obviously. And the one that called now must have been someone else, as Partridge was already dead.
I can already tell you what Jane finds next episode. Sophie Miller's head in the oven. Yes. She told RJ or he got it out of her unwittingly. GASP. Rolls eyes. If only I did not read it on a fanfic or can tell you what happens from the promo. When a writer needs to get a plot line from a fic, it is time to end the show. I am disappointed Heller has him find a predictable excuse. Certainly explains the terrible ratings last night. Head in oven is a #Jumping the Shark moments that Baker can't even save the writing from! This show should have ended before the terrible episode TDR. As a fan who wanted season 7, I hope and pray it does not. Many seasons were good and I don't need to see it ruined by continuing on when Heller doesn't know what to write. He is following a bad Jisbon fic. Mark my words the no sexual-chemistry-together couple will get together and ruin show. Robin has said the closeness you see is her and Simon and not Jane/Lisbon and she is completely right. Her shipper fans are too blind and it is going to be the unsexiest and weirdest couple because Lisbon has no romantic spark or any sexuality.
But Lisbon is an important person - he doesnt kill her because he wants her to be his "masterpiece" to finish Jane off - I think he will go after her at last...
I don't see how it's a jumping-the-shark moment at all...
As for the ratings, Sunday is a terrible night. Football, the Breaking Bad finale (a show that shares a lot of the same fan base as The Mentalist), etc.
Sophie Miller is not credited for this episode. I'd be surprised to see a picture or her head without any flashback at least. And in that case she must be in the cast.
I just see a blond woman in the pic, not necessarily Sophie Miller. I'd say the oven is unrelated to RJ, it's the case of the week.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
There's not an "Evil" button so I had to choose "Awesome".

Lisbon is getting dumber. Should make for an interesting season

ReplyDeleteHolly Shit!!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't anyne listen to the epsidode's? Betram said at the beginning SacPd blamed her for the shooting that's why they didn't come.

Totally unoriginal.
Good parts are hundred by being somewhat contrived. If Lisbon were to die it'd be a lot better. She's fine of course.
ReplyDeleteEven if you leave any potential romantic feelings out of it - any rational fan has to admit that Jane & Lisbon are close friends, so I wonder how the writer's will show the obvious guilt Jane will be experiencing. ReplyDeleteYou're just hilarious.
ReplyDeleteLisbon: Jane let's act normal, next breath WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE ISN'T PSYCHIC? YES HE IS. <- stupid comment #10001
ReplyDeleteI would be embarrassed to be a fan of her Robin has loony eyes.
Yeah they are for now but he will be wanting out of CBI he can live without her very clearly. Who would want a reminder of RJ in their life? She is really the past. Heated here a few hours ago but I will say aside from a personal attack none of the other comments should be deleted. Any disagreement should not be called a troll. ReplyDeleteWhy does nobody listen to Jane when it comes to RJ?
RJ's voice on the phone doesn't match any of the 7 suspects. How come?
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on that one!!
ReplyDeleteIt does match Brett Partridge's voice. It's got that same nasal quality to it and also very clear pronunciation. And I really don't think he is dead! Is it an omen Lisbon dies at the end when they catch or kill RJ? I would not mind but I do not want them messing with Jane like that too.

ReplyDeleteMark my words the no sexual-chemistry-together couple will get together and ruin show.
ReplyDeletesome pretty awful bluebox work in the beginning but I absolutely loved the episode ... evil!!
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't kill her because he wants to do it in front of Jane, so he can see his face.
ReplyDeletePsychopaths are weird like that.

I think Simon Baker is actually the one who does the voice.
ReplyDeleteI don't see how it's a jumping-the-shark moment at all...
ReplyDeleteAs for the ratings, Sunday is a terrible night. Football, the Breaking Bad finale (a show that shares a lot of the same fan base as The Mentalist), etc.
Sophie Miller is not credited for this episode. I'd be surprised to see a picture or her head without any flashback at least. And in that case she must be in the cast.
ReplyDeleteI just see a blond woman in the pic, not necessarily Sophie Miller. I'd say the oven is unrelated to RJ, it's the case of the week.
broke my shipper heart
ReplyDeleteDoes Lisbon run in high heels? I've always thought she wears much more sensible shoes than Beckett.
