Sep 28, 2013

Details are sketchy as conversations are in very early stages with multiples ideas discussed, but I hear one offshoot concept that is being explored is for a show built around standout Modern Family guest player Rob Riggle and the character he played in two episodes last season.

  5. They are not only remaking the sh*t out of any successful movie from the past, but the lack of imagination is generating a spin-off frenesi that it pretty annoying.

  6. When a spin off can be something that enhances a world in a natural feeling way I'm all for them... For instance, I think Angel was fantastic, it expanded that world but told adult focused stories but never came across as a corporate cash grab. I'm hoping The Originals will be similar, I like that that is more mature as well.

This season though everything feels/sounds like something forced because people want to make money. What's next? New Girl and Sleepy Hollow spinoffs from FOX and a Revolution and Blacklist and Parks spinoff from NBC?

  7. I agree, the problem is not the idea of a spin off per se, but the fact that nowadays so many people prefer the easy way, i.e. resorting to rehashing sth the audience already knows in the hope that it will atract viewers instead of comming up with sth new. Remaking sth or making a spin off of a show should be motivated by a great idea, and not by being too lazy to think about a new great idea.
The spin off or even remake can work (21 Jump Street, Frasier, NCIS, Hawaii 5-0) or just show that there was really no reason other than "cashing in" by doing it (Joey, The Tortellis, Charlie's Angels, Gus van Sant's Psycho).

  10. If they really want a spin-off, I'd much rather have it be about Kevin Hart's Andre.
