Hostages - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Review

And here is CBS' newest experiment!

The new, high-octane political thriller Hostages premiered on Monday night. This markts the second serialized drama in a short time that CBS is broadcasting, after last summer's Under the Dome (which aired in the same timeslot). Under the Dome was, rating-wise, a success (it was summer's #1 show), but critical reception did not always praise the show. With Hostages this might just be the other way around. The ratings for the first episode were not very good (going against Castle and The Blacklist), but the show has a very good concept and has the potential to grow. Hopefully, the audience will grow as well.

The pilot episode set up a good premise for the show. The episodes moves at a good speed: not too fast and not too slow either. Its primary focus is, of course, the hostages (the Sanders family). Not only do we get to see how they deal with the situation, but we also get insight into their lives and their secrets. What might seem as a normal family, reveals itself as so much more: a complicated marriage with lots of disagreement, an affair, a pregnancy and a kid doing illegal stuff.

Moreover, the show also shows an insight into the life of the president. He is not just someone who has to undergo surgery. He is someone who uses this surgery as a publicity stunt. Plus: we meed his advisor (AKA co-conspirator) and his wife.

And then there is the hostage-takers. We see the woman trying to create somewhat of a bond with the daughter, while one of the men shows Jake that his dog is still alive. Most important of all is Duncan. He is a very interesting character. His wife is in a coma, while his little girl stays at her grandfather's. Duncan is also an FBI-agent who puts an end to a hostage situation in a bank. Later on that same day, he creates a hostage situation himself. He wants
the Sanders family to fear them, but he does prevent Ellen from discovering her daughter's pregnancy.

As I said, I believe this show has potential. But just as everyone else, I am wondering how they will continue this for 15 episodes, let alone a possible second season (which seems a little bit unlikely seeing the ratings for the first episode). For now, though, this show has got my attention!
