Gotham - Origin Drama of Commissioner Gordon ordered straight to Series at FOX

25 Sept 2013

In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and is yet to meet Batman who will not be part of the series. The Gordon character was introduced in 1939 in the very first Batman comic. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy where he was played by Gary Oldman. Along with the Superman franchise, the Batman universe is probably the most prized DC property.

  1. Well that's a surprise. .. a pretty nice one.

  2. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be negative, but no way they manage to cast a decent Commissioner Gordon after Gary Oldman.

  3. I wonder if this will tie into a Justice League movie. WB will have to be careful to maintain consistency across Man of Steel, Arrow, Flash, and Gotham if they are all going to feed into the Justice League.

  4. I bet we'll see Gordon taking on Joker and Two-Face before Bruce even dons the cowl. Smallville style.

  5. I agree Gary Oldman was great but I'm sure there is some else great too. There's no way he'd go over to tv right?

  6. Whoa! Let's see how this goes!

  7. Well, nowadays you never know, with so many big screen actors defecting to the small screen ;)
but chances are they have in mind a younger Gordon since it will be prequel, so they're probably looking for someone in their late twenties to early thirties.

  8. Unfortunately it seems like the age group of 16-25 is seriously lacking great actors/actress. I remember when I was young there was roswell, dawson creek, 7th heaven, smallville, etc filled with great actor/actress but today I struggle to think of a handful. If you can think of any please correct me.

  9. Since I still belong to that demographic (barely though, just half a year left, lol), I wish I could disagree but I can't. Talent is severely lacking on that generation of tv actors. Hopefully, casting will find some unknown diamond in the rough that will surprise us all. Hopefully, but not likely.

Its Fox, not the CW. I think an actor ranging from 30s to 40s would be good enough. Benedict Cumberbatch, Aidan Gillen or Matthew Fox anybody?Although I picture Bryan Cranston filling the role too.

  11. Well yeah, I did say late twenties to early thirties, although I don't see them looking for someone in their 40s since this is supposed to be prequel. But someone in their 30s is quite likely.

  12. Agreed but this Gordon is much younger and less experienced compared to Gary Oldmans Gordon

  13. If I'm not mistaken, CBS and NBC are the only networks left to not have a comic book super hero-esque tv show. I see a trend here.

  14. Where Marvel goes DC follows. What Marvel does DC does. ("Team" films and now TV dramas). I'm waiting for DC to be in the lead for once at doing something - though I do love their more gritty and dark films, so at least there's a positive. (And I for one am not a Marvel fan or a DC fan - I enjoy both.)

  15. I imagine NBC will be staying away from it for a while as they had both Heroes (huge hit then huge flop) and The Cape (disaster). I can't imagine CBS going into that genre at all but hey if SHIELD is a massive hit maybe they will think to get in on the action.

  16. I'm glad DC are doing a non CW superhero based show something a little more grown up by the sounds of it.

  17. Hi there, Arrow. But I see what you mean with the "human" entities of these universes.

  18. I like the sound of it

  19. Little Finger becomes a main on GOT so he's not going anywhere. Definately not matthew fox or bryan cranston I don't see them at all as gordan

  20. Yes, I believe this Gordon would be in his late 20s or early 30s.

  21. He could pull off Mary f*cking Poppins IMO, so he'd kill as Commissioner Gordon!
