American Psycho - FX Developing TV Sequel

Sep 10, 2013

FX is developing a TV-series sequel to Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial modern classic American Psycho.

The novel told the story of a wealthy young investment banker in the late 1980s who moonlit as a serial killer. A film version starring Christian Bale was released in 2000. The FX version will be set years after the events in the book and star a Bateman in his 50s who takes on a new apprentice.

The official logline: “In the new drama series, iconic serial killer Patrick Bateman, now in his mid-50’s but as outrageous and lethal as ever, takes on a protégé in a sadistic social experiment who will become every bit his equal — a next generation American Psycho.

The project will be written by Stefan Jaworski and co-produced by Lionsgate and FX. Allison Shearmu, Jaworski and Ed Pressman are executive producers.

  1. I loved Bale in the role in fact he was a perfect Bateman can't think of an actor in their 50s who could do that role hmmm

  2. Exactly. Bale was perfect and convincing and without perfect casting I can't see how this show could work. I just can't imagine anyone who could pull this off with the same intensity as Bale did.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but one could draw two conclusions from the novel's events:
either Bateman fantasized the whole thing or,
society was so shallow and self-absorbed that the murders just got... ignored.
So... am I to assume that this sequel is restricting itself to the latter?

  4. I don't know about this. I guess I will wait and see who's cast before I will judge this.

  5. Yes casting is key in this, I'm really drawing a blank right now over who they could use.

  6. Classic FX. Completely useless. Not only was there a very, very bad sequel already, they´re trying to jump on the serial-killer-tv-show-train... three years too late.

  7. This shouldn't be made. Too many ignorant people are gonna be complaining about it being a rip-off of Dexter.

  8. I have my doubts about this....but then again, I also had my doubts about Hannibal, and that turned out great. I guess I´ll wait till I hear more about the cast to decide if I´m interested.

  9. Yeah, but Hannibal got Mads. I was doubting Hannibal until I saw that Mads was cast because he could pull it off. This American Psycho sequel can only work IMO if they get the perfect casting, but I have no idea whatsoever who could play the character as well as Bale did.

  10. It's going to be hard for me to be comfortable with anyone but Christian Bale in the role, honestly. I'll wait and see but I'm not holding my breath on this one.

  11. Personally I always subscribed to the first theory so this whole sequel idea doesn't really work for me.... unless he fantasizes of his protege too in a way, like an imaginary friend of sorts...

  12. Not too sure this is gonna work out. Wait and see I guess.....
