The Revengers - Dramedy from Rashida and Kidada Jones gets Script commitment at The CW

Aug 24, 2013

The CW is getting into the revenge business.

The younger-skewing network has handed out a script order to The Revengers (briefly known as Ladyballs ), an hourlong dramedy from Rashida Jones and her older sister, Kidada Jones , The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The project, which hails from Warner Bros. Television, where the Parks and Recreation star is under a two-year pod deal, revolves around two twenty-something estranged friends in search of love in New York who are reunited after learning that they've been dating the same guy. When their plot to humiliate the two-timer goes viral, they realize the "payback" business is a lucrative one and set up a clandestine business to continue bringing down the hand of justice for those who have been wronged.

Jones and her Celeste & Jesse Forever writing/producing partner Will McCormack will executive produce alongside Allegiance Theater's Daniel Dubiecki ( Juno, Up in the Air ) and Lara Alameddine . Prep School Confidential author Kara Taylor will pen the script and co-executive produce the dramedy, which also hails from Jones' Le Train Train banner. Kidada Jones will produce, marking a first for the model/actress/fashion designer. Jeff Grosvenor will also produce. The Jones sisters came up with the concept and Taylor flushed out the idea for The Revengers, which marks Le Train Train's first hourlong project.

  1. "The CW is getting into the revenge business.".....two years too late.

Have to say that this one sounds intriguing though. A different set up to the case of the week approach. I like how Pedowitz keeps branching out to try new things on the CW. Still waiting for them to bring back comedies though.

  2. I agree, I think what the CW is missing is comedies. This new show sounds like a cross between "John Tucker Must Die" and "Leverage". Sounds promising, hope it gets picked up

  3. I hope it is more like Leverage. I've been missing a great caper show since Leverage was cancelled.

  4. Agreed. I feel like this can have great potential if they let it grow. Leverage was awesome, and anything remotely like it is welcome in my book

  5. IA -this script sounds more promising than some of the other "projects" (not counting the potential Arrow/SPN spinoffs) The CW is also exploring.

  6. *Sobs* I miss Leverage !

  7. You and me both. If I cannot have Leverage anymore (although would a couple of movies kill them?), then at least let them get new shows and have the others guest star.

  8. There are so many of the same types of shows out there that I am sad that the only caper one is gone. I mean White Collar occasionally has the intricate con that Leverage specialized in but I can't think of anything else. It was great fun seeing how they put everything together. Now I am getting really nostalgic. It might be time to pull out those Leverage DVD's again.

  9. I am really interested first off to see how this season with its heavier reliance on genre shows does and second, what they will pick up next year. I think Pedowitz has done a miraculous job of turning the CW in the right direction. I would love to see 4-5 shows really do well for them next year and perhaps have 1 or 2 do better than The Vampire Diaries. Not that I have anything against TVD, just that it would signal that the CW was making a resurgence.

  10. Yeah...one of the reasons I liked SPN 7.20 (TGWTD&DT) so much is it's Leverage-like "caper vibe". As I said after the ep aired, I "squeed" when Sam and Dean disguised themselves as baggage handlers rather than their highly overused "Fed badges". If they can't "get" recurring roles on present shows (new " Pilot season" hasn't been past the development stage yet AFAIK), I would love to see the Leverage "kids" (Spencer/Hardison/Parker) cast as guest or recurring roles on SPN. I'm aware thar Aldis was "Jake" in S2 but SPN reuses and renames guest stars frequently.

  11. Me, too, and I'm a bit nervous at The CW's super heavy genre schedule this upcoming year. Not that I'm not looking forward to TO - to a certain extent - TTP, and The Hundred at midseason but if CW "history" is considered, at least will underperform and not be renewed. (I'm not touching Starcrossed with a 10 ft pole - I didn't like Roswell at all and gave up on B&TB after 3 watches - not at into the forbidden/dangerous love between a "non human" and human trope, although I did enjoy the original B&TB but that show ended years ago.)
One last season new (genre) show bombed entirely (Cult) and the other one (B&TB) still has folks still scratching their heads over its renewal. Nikita only received a 6 episode renewal. Ringer and TSC were yanked the year before.

For SPN's sake (as it's lead out) I hope that TO kicks ass and takes names and SPN has great retention, or at least serves as well as lead-in as Arrow in it's last half dozen episodes where SPN tied, beat, or was within 0.1 in demo.

I just can't see any new show punishing TVD in the ratings at this point. I don't even see TO once it moves to Tuesdays challenging TVD in ratings. Last season Arrow came close but lost a little speed (vs TVD). TTP may overtake TVD but only if Arrow kicks it up a notch in storyline this year - which it should. The trend in many genre shows has been that survive to get a second season is it's more exciting than the first since most of the main character building has been already accomplished.

  12. I don't think they can ever recast Aldis given that he killed Sam. It was too pivotal a character. However, people have been clamoring for Christian to be on Supernatural for awhile now. I think that is the most likely scenario.

  13. You're right :)
But "Jake" would make a great recurring or one shot demon, though, with Hell without a King. Canon was twisted hard last season... the Jake demon could have emerged from Hell looking exactly like AH (LOL).
Yes, Christian would be a great fit on SPN and I would be surprised if CK wasn't considered for a one shot guest or recurring role, unless he's been in demand for other tv/movie work since Leverage ended. (I haven't checked what CK's been "doing").

  14. Star-Crossed could go either way. For those thinking it is a new take on Roswell, it is not. They will be disappointed going in with that mind set. However those going in with an appreciation of the societal issues the alien society faces may be pleasantly surprised - if that's the direction they ultimately go with and I hope they will.

I agree that the CW has mixed results with their new shows so I am hoping this is successful. I think TO and TTP will ultimately be successful but I am leery of Reign. Plus most midseason shows get NO traction with the CW audience so that is worrisome too. The CW needs Arrow to get back to its beginning demos for sure. I'm not sure that TVD will stay the ratings dominator but I don't think any recurring shows can touch it unless TVD's ratings tumble. I still think that another show might do it. After all Whose Line is it Anyway? had great success this summer. It could actually be the #1 ratings show if they bring it in during the regular season.

  15. Canon was screwed over, left for dead, beaten to an inch of its life, struggled to stay alive, and then was pierced in its barely beating heart last season on Supernatural. At this point anything could happen and I wouldn't be surprised. However Jake coming back would be preferable to a lot that probably will happen.

I haven't heard much about CK either except for an appearance in a country music video. I thought maybe he was working more on the music side of his career. Since he's friends with the J's, I would expect him to be on before anyone else from Leverage, but I have to admit that having Beth on would be awesome. I could see her as one amazing demon. Better yet, Abaddon is coming back and needs a new body. BR would be perfect. We already know she has the flexibility for some amazing fight scenes.

  16. True, I really loved their take on the caper series and hoe each episode is unique and the fun in it is seeing how everything ties in in the end. Actually I'm going through the series again watching an episode or two if I have the time. I honestly think an occasional Leverage tv movie in tnt is a great idea, love for it to happen, considering the nature of the show is very procedural

  17. After all this talk about Leverage, I am getting very nostalgic so as soon as the baby goes to sleep, I am going to pull out some of my favorite episodes for a mini-marathon myself.

  18. This might be a good stepping stone to get back into comedies....
If this one pans out, then in the show's second season he can created a comedy block of two half hour shows and end the night with this hourlong dramedy....

  19. I hope it's more of the "fun female empowerment" variety, rather than "catty bitchyness disguised as female empowerment".
