It appears the fallout from The Mentalist‘s looming Red John reveal is extending to the show’s call sheet.
TVLine has learned exclusively that original castmembers Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman will be leaving the CBS procedural toward the end of Season 6 (premiering Sept. 29 at 10/9c).
The departures of colleagues and sometime-lovers Van Pelt and Rigsby will likely tie into this fall’s unmasking of Red John, a six-year-old mystery whose resolution is poised to set the show on a new course.

It'll be sad to see them go, but intrigued about the "new direction" of the show after RJ. Has it been confirmed that they're leaving?
ReplyDeleteI doubt that TV Line would post something like this unless they were very sure.
ReplyDeleteIt ties in with the news we announced about 2 new regulars joining the show here

The Mentalist creators will have to come up with something really really really good to keep fans watching after RJ has finally been ousted, otherwise S6 will also be the last season in the series. The Sundays 10|9c timeslot won't help that either
ReplyDeleteAww man. It's good time for them to go though, I'd say their story-line has wrapped pretty well in the last season. As long as they pull something crazy and kill them off, I'll be happy. I always wanted to know more about Van Pelt's past though...maybe we'll learn more this season.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind. These two and their on and off affair kind of grated. I preferred stories focused on Cho.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking this might be the case when they announced the casting of TWO new regulars. Will be kinda sad to see them go, but it's not that big a deal. I was never too invested in their characters or their characters' relationship. :p
ReplyDeleteI actually DO have the feeling that season 6 is going to be the last
ReplyDeleteone... I just hope they'll tie things up properly, nothing worse than
open endings....
So it was true...
ReplyDeleteI'll be sad to see them go, but at least this means that Rigsby and Grace may end up together. And I'm glad, always liked them.
I think this is not a big loss because to be honest, these are mediocre characters. Even, this development could be refreshing and a new taste for the series if the new characters are written well. By the way, I'm repeating my wish for a new big villain after RJ case comes to an end in case of show's being picked up for seventh season.
ReplyDeleteSo they get killed by RJ? Finally the writers grew some balls.
ReplyDeleteIt has been rumored for a while that Season 6 is the last.
ReplyDeleteYes, if they wanted the show to continue even after Red John then they should have ended that story ages ago and set up another story while they were at it. So yeah they're going to have to come up with something really great if they want the viewers to stick around.
ReplyDeleteI think end game has always been Red John. I get the feeling Heller's got pretty realistic ideas about how far the show will go. It kind of reminds me of how they dealt with Lost.
ReplyDeletekinda sad to see them go as they were good support characters, but it's understandable as beyond Rigsby's father issues and the romantic angles the writers didn't have anything else for them, and perhaps getting them together again (been there/done that) is the set up since they aren't supposed to be dating according to CBI rules, so they will both leave to be happy. I'm glad that it will give a chance for more info on Cho, as we've hardly gotten anything on his character comparatively, but of course Lisbon/Jane are the focus and will always be taking up the most screentime
ReplyDeleteI was OK with losing Van Pelt but now Rigsby is hard. Knowing they are both leaving makes me nervous about what may happen with the Red John ending. I still think this will be the last season but who knows for sure.
ReplyDeleteYou easily have the most reasonable and objective response to this news and I tip my hat to you.
ReplyDeleteI just don't see The Mentalist lasting after this season. The ratings for last season were pretty low, and the show was in danger of cancellation. So I think this is the last season, anyway. I just HOPE they don't kill off any VanPelt and Rigsby!!!
ReplyDeleteTheir romance was annoying... and Van Pelt in particular got nearly insufferable after their break up. But I've always like Rigsby stories. So him I will miss....
ReplyDeleteCho however stories are never a dud.
Still Lisbon is the best one though...
Because I am quite unattached to Van Pelt I don't mind losing her. Rigsby however I do love so that does hit me a little harder. Having said I can see why them leaving is probably better done as a package deal.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed they don't get killed off though.
New direction seriously ? This show barely survived to get renewed this year . Hopefully if they solve red john (I think its bret styles personally) they do it quickly before CBS cancels it mid season so fans at least have store line closure .
