The Henchman - Comedy similar to Despicable Me gets Put Pilot commitment at FOX

Aug 12, 2013

A high-concept comedy, which drew interest from all major broadcast networks, has landed at Fox with a put pilot commitment. Titled The Henchman, the single- camera comedy project was written on spec by Dan Kopelman (Rules Of Engagement, Malcolm In The Middle), with feature writer-director John Hamburg ( Meet The Parents franchise, I Love You, Man) set to direct and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment executive producing. Described as a live-action, grounded comedy in the vein of Despicable Me, The Henchman centers on a henchman to the world’s worst super-villain who deals with single parenthood and impending middle age. The project is yet to be laid off at a studio, with Fox sibling 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. TV considered strong possibilities.

  1. Well, Despicable Me without Steve Carrell and the minions... not sure. Will have to wait and see.

The concept is fairly attractive, let's see how this plays out.

  4. This is an interesting concept but I have my doubts something like this would attract a big enough audience to survive on a broadcast network. Seems more suited to FX (or the upcoming FXX) than it would be to FOX.

  5. Wouldn't this just be "Venture Brothers" in Live-Action?

  6. Maybe they can get Steve Carell to play Gru in this custome. :P

  7. it will be interesting to see if a live action adaptation inspired by an animated property like DM will work... I remember the live action version of "The Tick" and loved it but that was probably a bit too offbeat for regular viewers back then... I like the out of the box thinking, and we'll just have to see

  8. It could be brilliant or a complete disaster.... either way I can't see it attracting a HUGE audience.
