Suits 3.5 'Shadow of a doubt'

‘Shadow of a doubt’ not only works to question everyone’s motives, but also to bring the old Suits’ vibe back. The season puts the legal focus on Ava Hessington’s case, but this week’s games of mischief brought to light the desires and motives of most of the characters beyond legal life.

Louis and Nigel finally make peace with each other through the mutual affection for cats. Rachel and Mike seem to be having more serious talks, about their future and her future, while working together, their relationship reflected in the couple whose case they're working on. Mike’s secret and the possibility of getting caught comes up again, as does Rachel’s goal of studying law. With Harvard out of sight, there are other law schools to apply for and find a good fit. To be honest, as sad as I would be if Rachel left to school, it would be refreshing to have a storyline of her own that didn't revolve around her being a love interest.

Donna tells Harvey about her affair with Stephen; Harvey says he’s ok about it as long as her work doesn't get affected. He’s working with Stephen and they seem to understand each other, until the latter goes behind his back making a bold move to get ahead in the game related to Ava’s case. It doesn’t work and to say that Harvey’s is mad isn't accurate, he kicks his British counterpart out of his office and goes to Jessica. Jessica solves the problem with having a honest conversation with Ava- they are both powerful women that needed to make sacrifices to keep their companies in one way or another. An agreement between Ava and Giannopoulos fixes Hassington Oil’s monetary problems and brings important players to their side in the fight against Cameron and Ava’s murder case. Meanwhile Jessica makes a move and gives Harvey a Pearson - Darby - Specter business card; her way of telling him: your name is going on the door, you will become a senior partner, it is just a matter of time. Is this truthful? or just a move, she bringing her bishop to action in a game of chess?

Next week is a flashback, apparently focusing on Donna and Harvey’s relationship and his time on the D.A office: will it make him think about everything he went through and how Jessica helped him? will it work to amend things between them? will this (tiresome) takeover shenanigan end? will the can opener mystery be solved?
For me, it’s time for Harvey and Jessica (if her offer was genuine, because if it isn't, it’s another story) to work together again, when they get along they’re invincible, when they don’t, the last couple of episodes happen.
This was an episode that made the viewer wonder about the outcome of every storyline that's been going on this season, and some that hadn't had proper closure since the show started. It feels as a transitional episode, one that could be a game changer to how this season has been developing; but, leaving speculations aside, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

  1. Good review. I think Jessica's offer was a move with a gesture. Suits from the beginning of S3 has emphasized symbols: office to Mike from Jessica, 16 yr old Jessica's car from her mom, Harvey having a drink in the office w/Mike - all representing bitter & sweet. Jessica's tea set (gift from Hardman's wife) made a prominent appearance in EP5. When Harvey came into Jessica's office she was drinking from it & her expression before she faced him was telling. In his office she brings up the tea set reminding him he retrieved it for her. When Hardman rtn'd he took it from her office & Jessica called it an act of war. Harvey retrieved it for her to make amends to her for his (Harvey's) act of betrayal against her. She may as well have set that tea set (symbol of war & betrayal to her) on top of that offer (card), he wants his name on the wall bad enough to betray/declare war on her. She seemed hurt, defiant, resolved, & resolute & probably taking the same advice for herself that she gave to Ava. I hope things turn out better for JP than Harvey, Mike, Donna, Darby, & Steven have plotted for her.

She & Ava would make great (secret) allies.
