ReplyDeleteNever heard of him. But then I never heard of Matt Smith or David Tennant until Doctor Who. I"m looking forward to his run.

ReplyDeleteLittle bit disappointed in terms of all the hype and it ends up being the one that has been mentioned for the last week. BUT I know he is going to be amazing because Capaldi is a class act.

ReplyDeleteThey went old school with this selection. Get ready for what will likely be a significantly different Doctor / companion dynamic than what people have gotten used to since the reboot.
ReplyDeleteI just looked him up on IMDB. He was in Torchwood: Children of Earth. I remember him now. He was simply brilliant in it.

ReplyDeleteI wanted an older doctor. I enjoyed Smith but felt like the past few years the show has become a tad childish. I think with an older doctor he could have bit of a darker side (like the 9th doctor)

ReplyDeleteWhy would someone in their 50's be a concern? The good number of the doctors have been over 50 and were adored by the fans. The Doctor is not supposed to be young just because some of the viewers are young.
ReplyDeleteHe;s not a little bit old. Look at Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee. Until Matt Smith, the youngest Doctor was Davidson.

ReplyDeleteEccleston had a certain charm of menace around him. Tenant had the whole silent darkness behind him. Matt Smith felt more like...Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, leading his companions down the rabbit hole, hurrying erratic and not as dark as previous ones.
I doubt it will ever come to that, frankly. This casting, no matter how good actor is, has proven that BBC plays it safe, sadly.

Possibly, but not necessarily. Alex Kingston is 50, and was the wife of a Doctor twenty years her junior; Chistopher Eccleston is 18/19 years older than his companion, Billie Piper, who was playing a few years younger than her actual age, widening the gap further. On top of that, the Doctor is over a thousand. Everybody's young compared to him anyway.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, it could be interesting to see if they will do something different with the companions. Whether we'll see more Donna/Ten sort of relationships, or even something more familial, with him acting as some sort of father figure to his companions. Or he could be just as flirty as ever. Which would be weirder for Clara (assuming she stays on as companion) - an older version of the Doctor who now treats her more like a daughter or favorite niece or something, or an older looking Doctor who flirts with her even more than the younger Doctor did?
That's what I like about the changing of the Doctors, really. No matter the casting, you're never quite sure what you're going to get, and how Capaldi's age will affect the Doctor's personality and relationships will be fun to see.
I think he'll be great. Loved him in Torchwood, thought he was brilliant, hopefully he'll be the same. Can't wait to see him now. Was still hoping it could have been Tennant but oh well :D
ReplyDeleteI don't see how. Donna was nothing like Rose, who was nothing like Amy in terms of their dynamics with The Doctor.
ReplyDeleteI don't expect they'll end the flirtation between Clara and the Doctor because of the age gap.
He may be old for 2013, though. This show has grown in part because of the demographic under Tennant and Smith. I don't know how that group, filled with fangirls, will tolerate a return to an older Doctor.

ReplyDeleteGreat choice picking Peter Capaldi... i can't wait to see the dynamic of Capaldi and Jenna Louise Coleman. I can't wait to hear is catchphrase. He'll be more a darker doctor just like Eccleston and also very mature. Very much different from Matt Smith.

Only two were in their 50's iirc? Back then it was a very different show thou, all three of the Doc's since the revival have complained how tough the filming schedule is and then there's the extras that also come with a role like this. Therefore I have my concerns that we could be looking at more split series or a short term 12th.

ReplyDeleteThat would require them to actually AUDITION actors of another ethnicity to find out who is the best actor. The announcement of Peter Capaldi was clear that they had him in mind and didn't audition others. You can't be the best if you are not even allowed in the door.
ReplyDeleteThe fandom has been around since 1963, and every doctor has had fangirls. What made the fangirls attracted to them was the dynamic force of their personalities. You don't have to be young You have to be smart, witty, and capable of attracting a woman, not a little girl.
ReplyDeleteCall me naive, but I think they're holding off on that for story reasons. The Doctor can only regenerate twelve times, though we have heard there may be ways around that limit.
ReplyDeleteI think, and hope, they will pull the trigger on a female doctor or one of another ethnicity (or both?) when they reach that limit. If they continue this story that might happen in a few years, or if he lasts as long as Eccleston's doctor a whole lot sooner.
But that's just my opinion. :)

ReplyDeleteI always felt Smith lacked the gravitas of previous Doctors. Some had more than others of course, but Smith was just quirky and manic, no snark or menace.
I was very much hoping for an older doctor. I much prefer quirky and distinguished over quirky and childish. I would like to get back to what made the series great to start with.
ReplyDeleteThe magic screwdriver has gotten ludicrously over-powered in the last few years. They have used it to solve far too many problems. A Dalek with 2 sonic screwdriver arms would be the most powerful force in the universe. I am hopeful though, since they toned down the screwdriver a lot this year.

ReplyDeleteThat's the most important thing. People generally seem to be happy (or at worst, indifferent) to his casting, so that makes me happy. I haven't watched much of him outside of his one Doctor Who episode and his stint on Skins, so he's practically brand new to me. I kinda like it better that way, though. It's easier to think of him as the Doctor when I'm not remembering in other roles, on top of all the other Doctor's I'll inevitably compare him to.

me ive learned from my pre matt smith waiting and i admit i was like aaah this is gonna suck hes nothing like david tennant was

The story Moffat told was that he had had Capaldi in mind when Matt Smith was cast and when Matt quit Capaldi was the first name he came up with. He said he ran it by others on the team, asked Capaldi to come to his house to read for the part and when he was done they all agreed that he was the next Doctor. So one of the stories is wrong. They may have "auditioned" other actors to throw off the press, but Moffat said straight out that Capaldi was his choice from the word go.
ReplyDeleteHmm, you make a very good point. I hadn't looked at it this way. Hope is not lost, after all. (Not that I don't like Capaldi as the Doctor, I am just always appreciative of significant changes and innovation).
ReplyDeleteI think the beauty of Doctor Who is that the companion is the relatable one. The Doctor should always be 'alien' to us (not that people over 50 are alien but... you get it).

ReplyDeleteI was glad to see the screwdriver played down a bit in the latter half of this season. But it was still very noticeably overpowered.
A Dalek with two of them would just be overkill. xD
From what I can see, Capaldi's done a LOT of television. He knows the score.

ReplyDeleteHe got rid of K-9 too. Though I didn't mind K-9 nearly so much since he at least had a personality. The screwdriver is just a screwdriver.
