  1. I thought the pilot was really solid. The show didn't blow me away but the episode didn't drag and kept me interested from start to finish. I'll stick with this for a few more episodes to see how it holds up.

  2. Usually it seems like many shows have some sort of introduction plot to show the viewer who and what the characters are before they really push into the central story. Low Winter Sun took the opposite approach and let us peak into the world of the show by dropping the viewer in mid-stream. The effect was a fully dynamic and real world that felt organic, aged. It almost felt like I picked up the series midway through the first season... or maybe even the second season. The characters and plots have history and depth that the viewer can sense, but is not necessarily privy to.

To compare it to Breaking Bad.... It felt like we started the series as Walter White was already cooking meth without experience what drove him to start cooking. Because of that the show felt a bit chaotic to me at times.. I wonder if someone expecting a slow build that they can acclimate to may feel a little lost or overpowered?

There was a lot going on, on many levels, and I think I will have to watch the pilot again to really get a proper opinion of the series. The performances were strong all around and I like where the story seems to be going. I'm intrigued so far and I will be checking out a few more episodes to see if the show can draw me in a bit more on the emotional level.

Maybe I'm overstating things because I was tired as I watched the pilot?

  3. Having seen the movie the series is based on i was curious to see how this would translate into a tv series.

Two things immediately stuck out and they've got right imo are casting Mark Strong in the lead (he played the same role in the movie) and setting it in the urban decay of detroit (in the movie it was edinburgh).

The show starts pretty much in exactly the same place as the movie does, its the beginning act of killing the dectective that introduces us to Frank Agnew and its from there that all other acts take place.

Basically the movie dealt with the fallout from that act and the series seems to be going the same route, it's a defining act in the life of an otherwise good man and the reasons for it are pretty much what drives Agnew forward.

As Darque points out there is a lot going on, on many levels, this is the essences of the original movie, things are not quite what they seem and where events and characters end up is not where you might think.

What the series format allows that the movie did not is more in depth examinations of both events and of characters motivations, whether this is enough to stretch to a whole series though i'm not sure.

All in all though i was impressed with the opening and i look forward to more.

  4. I recently watched the british mini-series you mentioned and after watching the American pilot it seems like the EXACT same plot minus the british accents. I don't really understand the current trend of "remaking" stories in the same manner they've been told only a few years before. Seems pointless to me!
