When I was a child my older sister and I loved the Danny Kaye version of this movie. However I'm just not inspired by this trailer. The original movie was mild-mannered mama's boy with a vivid imagination stumbles into an international criminal plot. This looks like a mild mannered guy with a vivid imagination decides to follow his dream... sounds like a lot of other movies.
My thoughts exactly. The charm of the original movie was that the story was so tight knit, concentrating on the main character and his double life. As you said, taking him on a road trip to all these exotic locations seems to defeat the purpose that made this story special. Plus Danny Kaye was able to pull off both the bumbling idiot and the suave hero. Not sure if Ben Stiller can do the same.
Actually while I'm loathe to admit it, Ben Stiller has the range to play the kind of Danny Kaye characters found in the original movie. However, in the preview all I saw was a man lost in his quiet imaginations deciding to become an explorer, a far from unique story and far from unique range of characters from the original movie.
This was beautifully weird. Ben Stiller is such an underrated filmmaker... and actor. I think people think broad comedy is all he can do, and it so isn't. Quite looking forward to this....
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
