They are heading into the right direction. Even though they are still somehow unable to completely let go, I think they will eventually come to the realiziation that this is the best for both of them.

for me there can be life long friends or to have other relationships. I can not see them separated. it is true, better to "definitive end" h and other "fast and loose" but this thing of "just friends" you can not read!.
