FOX’S NEW EVENT SERIES “BROADCHURCH” (working title)
Network to Produce U.S. Version of Hit British Crime Drama
Boldly continuing its push for quality long-form event series, Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) announced today a series order for BROADCHURCH (working title), an American version of the the U.K.’s most-watched new drama of the year. Produced in partnership with Shine America, and to be executive-produced by the original series’ creator, Chris Chibnall (“Dr. Who,” “Camelot”), the gripping crime series is scheduled to begin filming in January, for broadcast during the 2014-2015 season.
Set in an American town, BROADCHURCH (wt) follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face, from where he may have fallen. Although the cause of his death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.
Chibnall will write the premiere episode and executive-produce the series with Shine America’s Carolyn Bernstein (“The Bridge”) and Jane Featherstone (“The Hour,” “Utopia”) from drama producers Kudos. The series will be distributed by Shine International.
Broadcast on the U.K.’s ITV earlier this year, “Broadchurch,” Chibnall's powerfully dark and thought-provoking drama starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, took the U.K. by storm. Immediately garnering critical acclaim, the series built into a cultural phenomenon, and drew more than 10 million viewers for its season finale.

ReplyDeleteThat's the thing. Foreign shows are too good to the US of A so they need to "americanize" it and make it suck.
ReplyDeleteI really don't get people complaining when a British show gets remade in America. No-one would be forcing you to watch it which means you really should be paying it no mind.
ReplyDeleteOh ya and it's not like British TV has never tried to remake American shows and utterly failed. There have been several instances of that.
Besides this is just a development announce there is no guarantee it gets picked up.
I don't know, in my opinions some American remakes are way better than the original (Shameless and The Office come to mind).

Typical of Fox. No originality. Just remake, remake, remake. And it's never as good as the original. In this case, Broadchurch, which is excellent and riveting to watch. I have enjoyed every episode. How can Fox even come close?

I am enjoying the FX remake of The Bridge a great deal despite having seen and loved the original Danish/ Swedish version.

ReplyDeleteAnd there is always the language factor. I can understand if they want to remake a foreign language series into an English language series, but Broadchurch is English!
That adds another layer of confoundedness to me XD
I can understand it in the sense that even if the language is the same, the culture is different. (small English town, quite distinct from small town Americana)... so there is that factor. But again, it's hard trying to encapsulate what worked in the original version and translate those themes in American... and so far it's a challenge I haven't seen any american remakes rise up to.
