Fan Expo Toronto - Sunday Coverage: Quick Notes

26 Aug 2013

So here’s another quick re-cap for Sunday at Fan Expo. Today was rather frustrating, but I did manage to make it to panels for Warehouse 13, Arrow, and Ron Perlman. Here are just a few tidbits from each – come back later this week for the full accounts...
First up, Warehouse 13’s panel for the final six episodes, which was much better moderated than the Defiance panel the day before. Eddie McClintock was his usual effervescent and charming self. He was joined by Alison Scagliotti and Aaron Ashmore. The panel started with a great sizzle reel for the final six episodes that had me longing for it to be 2014 already! Apparently, it’s been a bitter-sweet experience for the cast to be filming these last episodes, having to say goodbye to characters they’ve brought to life and their on-screen family, but it’s been very satisfying to say goodbye in a way that honors the fans. Last night was the wrap party for the show. Scagliotti promised that the last episodes are like “Warehouse 13 on steroids.” She said they’d pulled out all the stops to give the fans everything they want. She also quoted Saul Rubinek’s words from Comic Con that what happens to all the characters is both unexpected and inevitable. Like the Defiance panel, you could tell that this is a cast that had a great time making the show and had become close friends, and they all made a special point of emphasizing how much they appreciated their fans. McClintock, in particular, seemed very disappointed that there was no time allotted to fan questions.
The best panel that I attended was Stephen Amell’s panel. He was candid in his answers and genuine about his enthusiasm for the show. He did take questions from the audience and made a point of making eye contact with the person as he answered. AND he insisted on answering three more questions even after the moderator said they were “out of time.” There wasn’t another panel coming in, so Amell’s extra five minutes didn’t push anything off schedule, expect, perhaps his own break. He had a lot to say about the show, and I’ll be doing a separate post with all the tidbits later in the week, but some of the highlights are as follows: The season begins 5 months later. Oliver is not in Starling City. Starling city is in almost a police state due to the disaster in the Glades. Thea, Laurel, and Quentin all have new jobs and Moira is in prison. Oliver has come to terms with Moira. Laurel and Oliver are taking “time off” from their relationship. Felicity will sport a much sexier look this season and will once again be “out in the field” for some missions. Oliver will be happier in his work this season which he will see as honoring Tommy as opposed to exacting revenge for his father. As Oliver’s life in the present takes a turn for the better, life in the past on the Island takes a big turn for the worse. Roy’s year will see him facing trials and hardships, making it like his own time on the Island to be forged into something new. There will be a lot of DC characters making an appearance and though everything will be “rooted in science” some of these characters will have special powers. David Nutter will be back to direct.
Finally, I saw Ron Perlman’s panel. He is a fantastic storyteller and related stories from throughout his career. He’s been a part of so many franchises now that his focus was not on Sons of Anarchy, so I don’t have much to report on that front. He did say that Clay’s journey became very hard for him to play in season four as he needs to like the characters he plays and Clay really crossed some lines that he couldn’t reconcile himself to.
I had hoped to bring you some coverage of The Walking Dead panel and the Nathan Fillion panel, but it was impossible to get into them. Please look for my more in-depth posts – with some pictures – later this week...
