I don't know before Matt was announced in the days leading up everyone (including the bookies!) were convinced it was going to be Patterson Joseph or James Nesbitt. I just did a search and it was only in the hours leading up to the announcement that people suddenly started betting on Matt.

ReplyDeleteIm not a betting man but the past few days Capaldi really took a commanding lead. He didn't really even come on the bookies radar it seems until about a week or so ago.

ReplyDeleteYeah he does seem likely at this point and I would be fine with it I do love him but I would equally love it if someone out of the blue got the role.
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand why Capaldi is the betting man's favorite, unless the bookies know something we don't. In any case, as others have pointed out, they didn't really predict Matt Smith that heavily in advance. As for my own feelings on Capaldi, I've only ever seen him in that one Doctor Who role, so I can't really judge. I'd prefer a younger actor, to be honest, but that's probably just an irrational prejudice.
ReplyDeleteHad Matt even been on the list of possibles beforehand? I wasn't really in the loop at the time, but in hindsight it seems that he was something of a surprise announcement.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it will be Capaldi, if Matt and David found the workload hard....8-10 hours a day, 6 days a week for 10 months (and that's just filming, let alone the fan wankery that comes with it)....then I think they will go for someone younger than him myself. Otherwise we will get even more split seasons and poss only 1 year of the 12th Doctor due to burn out.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason he's fav at the bookies is because there's been whispers about him more recently, the exact same thing has happened when any other name has been banded about, esp Rory Kinear where they closed all bets after a few hours of the fake report in the papers last month. People flood bet, so the bookies have to react to try to cover any potential loses.
I see. Makes sense. I mean, it looks like a lot of people are voting for Benedict Cumberbatch as well, and there's zero chance of him taking the role on top of everything else he's doing. I don't even know why people bother. Gamblers are strange. :)

I personally think that it could be down to the fact that a lot of these betting sites online offer you a free £10 bet when you join, all you need is extra mail addresses to qualify over and over. Human nature will nearly always win over on a chance to make something from nothing unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, he would make a fab Doctor imo. It's purely just the workload that has me thinking that someone younger will/has been be cast :(
He was also brilliant in Doctor Who, fantastic actor imo! :D But, as I've said below, I have a feeling it won't be him :(

ReplyDeleteThe numbers next to the names are the odds of these people becoming the next Doctor as given by the bookmaker. For example:
ReplyDeletePeter Capaldi has the best odds of being named the next doctor at 11/8. Ben Daniels is next at 4/1. As you go down the list, the odds get smaller. (10 to 1, 16 to 1, 25 to 1, etc.)
Yeah, someone younger and lesser-known, most likely. It's the only way to get somebody with a free schedule.

ReplyDeleteCould it possibly be Tom Ellis since he wasnt available to return to Once Upon a Time season 3 due to some mysterious role that he has taken? It was never mentioned what that project was for why his Robin Hood character was being recast. Gothica wasnt picked up so why couldnt he return to OUAT?
