“This has been the ending that we [the executive producers] have talked about for years now,” the Showtime saga’s EP Sara Colleton shares with TVLine. “So to us, it feels right for our show and how we feel about it.”
While the brains behind the Dark Passenger “hope fans will think it’s right,” too, Colleton notes, “At the end of the day, we know that you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t.
“There will be people who hate it,” she admits, “but we can’t try to anticipate that or put it through the lens of any other show’s finale — because that was another show. This is our show. This is Dexter.”

I love it! I'll probably one of the guys who adore the ending.
ReplyDeleteRead similar comments before from their producers/writers before the season started I really like the way the season is going and what spoilers indicate for the next few episodes. And honestly, I think there is only one ending of the several I could think of that I would hate. All the others I think I could support and/or get behind. I wish them the best (and hope they do generate a spin off)

ReplyDeleteStrange, I swear this year and since announcing "the end", all the Producers said it would be a very satisfying and likely well received ending. So are they covering their bases or sending mixed messages for a reason?
ReplyDeleteWell to be fair, given Tony's dream sequences through out, one might be able to argue that it's ending could be interpreted differently, but it seems like geared towards 'the big nothing'.

ReplyDeleteNo it was, you were right and that's why I added the edit. The final scene of the Sopranos was really a master stroke that summed up the entire series. Poetic justice for a-hole Tony finally getting his after squandering the multiple second chances he was given.
ReplyDeleteIt's was really 'the big nothing' versus 'remember the good times/live a fulfilling life'.
And after the show I felt like I took away a good message, live a fulfilling live, take the opportunities you are given to make the world a better place. Tony could probably have avoided his fate if he wasn't so stuck in his ways.

As long as they're not going to attempt something as simple and hackneyed as redemption through sacrifice, I can deal with a happy or unhappy ending for Dexter.

ReplyDeleteI've seen good arguments to suggest another interpretation is that he was caught and it's through imprisonment in which Tony can start working towards the better aspects of himself presented in those dreams, because the idea of dreams themselves might disprove nihilistic existentialism, depending on how the viewer takes what those dreams actually are (hope, insight, an alternate version of reality). It's the idea that through prison he can't continue to be an escapist. The blackness could then be 'the big something', since it has an association with 'falling asleep' and would act as 'divine intervention'.
ReplyDeleteBecause even the idea of 'living free' still means you have to fight "something" to be free, not fight nothing...It's ending actually makes one think about "what difference would have it made, had he lived" leaving the viewers to chose between the big nothing and the big something.
That's where I think they will go, because that way Dex can still die an anti-hero, but also not let him have potential to ruin other people's lives. (although they could achieve this by having him behind bars indefinitely) The people who approve of Dex will know he was a good person, despite this tragedy, but also the people who watch the show and feel that all killers should get theirs will both have what they believed in, justifying both arguments. If they pick more of one side, then they will have alienated a certain part of their audience.

They, all the participants, want to make money by enhancing their careers and reputations, by increasing viewership, by increasing after-series sales, so forth. none of them wants to stumble. This producer wants to cover her a$$, what's the surprise? Listen, for a different culture, a 'good' ending might be some we'd consider only 'suitable'. That should be evident for all who appreciate the relativity of human taste.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to not be pandered to. Let an insightful and creative person or group run with it and do the very best they can. Whatever develops is what they give me to judge. This 'trying to make the best possible ending' is a fraud and leaves me cold and disinterested.
I think you're right in that it is a fraud in the sense that taste is subjective, but I think it is not a fraud if the writers believe they wrote what they thought was best, granted everyone has an angle. (careers, network, ethical standards)

I agree. I'm sure that I won't be "happy" with the ending, but I prefer it when writers focus on a story than pander to fans.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction - but I suck at these - is that the ending will have to be around Dex-Deb. I felt stronger about this before the suicidal attempt from Deb but I still say that I cannot see the two of them living simultaneously, which means one will somehow kill the other. I will not speculate on who is the killer and who is killed though
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine any real "happy" ending with this show, but I'd definitely be more upset with Deb dying than Dexter. Someone mentioned the possibility of Dexter sacrificing himself for someone else, and I could see that happening, only if he knew there would be someone to take care of Harrison. Another possible twist could be that Dexter's own protege, Zach, decides that Dexter fits the "code" and kills him.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising that they said this, given the pretty diverse amount of opinions the fans have towards the show, as well as some of the bold (but there aren't many, unfortunately) actions the writers have taken towards characters from Rita being killed off (which I still kinda see as a missed opportunity), to Travis being the sole killer (which wasn't that hard to figure out, and not done really well); also given the fact that most series finale nowadays are controversial to some people. The one thing really don't want, is a happy ending, because this is Dexter, not only would it feel like a cop out given this season's advertising as well because of this shows tone, but also because Dexter keeps making mistakes about trusting other killers and letting them live longer which should to me cost him his life.

ReplyDeleteI am curious, why do you think Rita being killed off was a missed opportunity? I think it was the highest point of the show, at least shocking wise. I was totally unspoiled and didn't even know someone was dying that episode, I was completely perplexed staring at the screen when it happened.
ReplyDeleteI like the Zach storyline but I would rather have the ending revolving around Dexter and Deb (or at least Quinn or someone that has been involved longer) than a newbie that is just showing up now. They could change my mind but I think it would be more organic and truthful to the show
ReplyDeleteI think Zack Hamilton will only be a minor reflection of things to come. I don't think the series is going to rest on his shoulders, as much as a couple of other characters. I agree the focus will be on Deb and Dex despite what the turn of events are. I too like the Zack Hamilton story line and how it ties us back to other things in the series.

I agree with you. As tragic as it was (and even though I still have issues with the murderer) I agree that it was thematically an important death and I think in the long haul they did the right thing. Like you said that breakdown in season 5 was amazing which then after Lumen leaving, finding faith and loosing it (Brother Sam) is really when this whole thing escalates and turns and it's really all stemming from this loss (along with Laura Moser's of course)...
ReplyDeleteOne thing I do wonder about, now seeing Zack Hamilton, is if this was where Louis Greene was meant to go, and the writers changed their minds due to having a season 8?? -To me it was the meanest red herring of the series...And I think being mad about video game approval has to be weakest excuse for a character to be hostile ever!! XD
Great point about Louis Greene, you are probably right. I would like to see later on an interview with the creators concerning "what could have been - it's like the eternal Libby thing from Lost ahah. But for me, an even worse read herring in Dexter was the nanny they had in season 5. Everyone thought she was up to something and there was some huge build up and then, in season 6, she was just gone! ahah

ReplyDeleteYa the Nanny is def another one that's weird. The actress also plays some darker roles, so it was strange that they didn't take advantage of her. (I don't fully trust her current character, Mrs. "S" on Orphan Black either, but I guess like always have to wait and see how that works out!)

ReplyDeleteI see Dexter dying in order to save Deb. This final act would prove he isn't a socio-path and a "real" boy. The show has a very Pinocchio theme and him becoming human should be the ultimate outcome. But how can he prove he is human other than sacrificing himself for the love of someone else. Just a thought.
