Devious Maids - Episode 1.08 Minding The Baby - Review: Teenage Surrogate
12 Aug 2013
Devious Maids MO ReviewsBabies. It was all about babies in this week's installment of Devious Maids. And lies, lies and even more lies. My head started spinning from all the lies. Let's break it down:
60 is the new 39. You gotta give credit where credit is due. Not many could pull it off to go on a two week cruise and come home with a billionaire. Apparently, Gen wasn't kidding when she told Zoila she'll be keeping an eye out for Hubby #7. Only there's one little white lie getting in the way: Alfred (portrayed by Dakin Matthews) thinks Gen is 39, that's 21 years younger than she actually is. If you're like Zoila and you're wondering how that can be: He's blind.
After Zoila accuses Gen of being a gold digger, it turns out that she is actually fond of Alfred. He eventually learns Gen's real age but forgives her for lying and sticks around under the condition he can still become a father since that is the reason why he got together with her in the first place. Since Gen is too old to get pregnant, Alfred suggests a surrogate: Valentina. That's not going to be awkward. Not at all.
Good ol' scotch. With Sam away doing God knows what, there was nobody in the house to act as a buffer when things get too tense between Odessa & Carmen but it seems like a buffer won't be needed any longer as there is a definite shift in their dynamic. By the way, how the hell did they fit Alejandro in that shirt? I'm not nearly as tall as him and I'm not sure if I would have fit in that tight shirt. Anyways, Carmen recognizes the smell of scotch in Odessa's breath and it turns out that Odessa has cancer and has been using alcohol as a pain reliever. Personally, I would have prefered it if Odessa was an alcoholic instead of a cancer patient. But at least we know why her leg got amputated: Odessa was a russian ballerina who lost her leg to bone cancer. She eventually moved to the US because she couldn't take the pity and sympathy anymore. This is a big step in their friendship and I hope the teasing remains because that is what makes their interactions so much fun to watch.
Baby, I need your lovin'. The Stappords are trying to extend their family but Taylor is worried. Michael left his first wife Olivia because she couldn't give him children and she is worried that he might do the same to her. Marisol accompanies her to a clinic to get tested. While Taylor talks about her fears, Marisol gets her lies mixed up and mentions her son even though she told Taylor she doesn't have any family. She quickly gets out of that mess by saying he is living with his father. When Marisol gets home she realizes that Olivia broke in and is preparing dinner and another one of Marisol's many lies is exposed: Olivia put her whole life on hold because she thought there is a chance of reconciliation and she learns that Marisol lied about Michael still having feelings for her. I'm actually starting to think she might be involved in Flora's murder. She is borderline obsessive with Michael and she knows about Adrian's “disgusting little hobby”. Could she also know the DVD of Michael & Flora?
Partners in crime. Now that Rosie knows the truth about Marisol, the two of them work on a plan to get their hands on the DVD of Flora that could exonerate Eddie. Rosie starts out as the new maid of the Powell residence and uses Baby Tucker as a distraction for Evelyn to sneak into the secret vault. But Evelyn gets too attached to Baby Tucker and Rosie decides to quit because she doesn't want him around her. Something about Evelyn with Baby Tucker rubs me the wrong way. She is clearly trying the fill the void that the death of Barrett left in her. It's unsettling and creepy. But at the same time, you can't help but feel for her.
When Rosie returns to get paid for her work, she gets a glimpse of a DVD labeled “Flora #10” in the safe and starts working as a maid for Evelyn again to get her hands on it. By now, we know that this is Michael's session with Flora. Rosie didn't find anything on the other DVDs, so does that mean Michael is Flora's rapist? Was Flora actually telling the truth about being raped or was she just trying to get back at Adrian?
Overall it was a good episode, not as solid as the previous ones but good nonethelless. With only five episodes left, there's not that much time to solve Flora's murder. What did you think about this week's episode and who do you think killed Flora? Sound off in the comments below!

Thanks for the review! I loved this episode!
ReplyDeleteWhile i think Valentina would normally be a great egg donor the fact that she is in love with Remi makes it a NO GO! If she and Remi ended up having a baby they would be half brothers.... the uncle and the half brother... uh... no.
