Donald Glover has lined up his followup series to
Community. The actor-comedian is set to write, executive
produce and play the lead in a half-hour comedy, which has
landed at FX for development. Tentatively entitled Atlanta , the
comedy is set against the backdrop of the Atlanta music scene.
Glover grew up in Atlanta and has an active music career as a
hip-hop artist, stage name Childish Gambino. I hear several
networks were interested in Atlanta but, in addition to the FX
comedy brand, Glover also was attracted by the network’s willingness to
accommodate his music touring schedule.

Are you kidding me? He hasn't even begun filming his 5 episodes of Community season 5 yet that he gets a starring role in a new comedy. So much for wanting to focus on his music career...
ReplyDeleteEven if FX accommodates filming to his schedule, he's going to be the central character, and they can't just leave the sets alone for a week if he has a concert to go, it'd be wasted money, therefore he's probably going to have to be there more than on Community's set.
Also, I found out that Donald Glover WAS at Comic-Con a couple of weeks ago. He wasn't on Community's panel, but he was on the panel of an animated show he guest-starred on once : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8x7Nt8PTFs . Not that he showed up for Community's panel last year either, but he had the excuse of apparently having a concert. Not this time, clearly. So, that's that.
His departure was clearly one of the cutbacks forced by NBC. Along with Chevy Chase leaving the show we have two actors leaving - just like Jones and Lowe in Parks & Rec.
ReplyDeleteAt least NBC give the writers couple of episodes to finish this characters' arcs and write them off properly. Not like ABC with "Suburgatory" for instance.

ReplyDeleteHe has never actually publicly confirmed that he is leaving Community to focus on his music career. He has not been very publicly recently after pushing restart on his social media stuff.
Furbul probably has it right that they are having to make cut backs, and Donald volunteered as he had this in the back burner.
Wow, that sounds like such an hateful post towards Glover for wanting to do what he wants, instead of Community. Glover deserve his own thing, and FX is a channel for an actor and talent like him. Not NBC that treats so much quality stuff like garbage.
ReplyDeleteCommunity went really down last season, and i dont think just adding Dan Harmon back could fix that mess. I think it`s better for a an actor to leave a sinking ship before it overfloods, than stay on it til it`s on the bottom of the sea.
No hate, just disappointment.
ReplyDeleteHe could have appeared at the Community Comic-Con panel since he was at another panel, he could have done the remaining eight episodes of season 5, he could promote the show (which, I agree, is treated like garbage, but still, it gets renewed), he could have waited until he saw the Dan Harmon scripts before deciding to jump ship.
I'm sure it wasn't a budgetary issue, as there is no Chevy Chase salary to pay anymore, and it's a 13-episode order instead of 22-24 episodes.
I'll be watching this FX show if it gets done, because it's FX and because I like Glover's acting on Community, but it still makes me quite of bitter to see this news so soon.
Maybe Donald Glover dont care that much about money, and just want to do something on his own?
ReplyDeleteand it's DONALD Glover, not Daniel :) [headline]
ReplyDeleteI'm not too sure about this new show.... wait and see I guess.... still bummed he's leaving Community though.
