ABC on Sunday further clarified which of its programming would be broken up into two uninterrupted blocks of 12-episode runs in addition to announcing its midseason schedule.
Resurrection will premiere Sunday, March 9 at 10 p.m. taking the slot occupied by Betrayal when the freshman drama's season concludes. The Quest will debut on Thursday, Jan. 2 with a two-hour premiere and moving into the slot occupied by Once Upon a Time in Wonderland following the latter's season finale.
Grey’s Anatomy, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and Scandal will return in the spring, following their winter finales, with all new episodes that will run with few or no repeats to their season finales in May.

I love this idea because their scheduling was so fucked up last year, tbh. The break is going to be slightly annoying, but it's worth it.

ReplyDeleteWill be interesting if this approach works ratings wise, I personally hate the on and off again scheduling most networks currently have, its much easier to get into a show when you get a long batch of new episodes. But then the long break between the two halves might cause shows to dip.

ReplyDeleteWhile I love the idea of not having mini-breaks within the season, I have to say that the 4 month break in between Grimm last year was a killer. Everyone said that NBC were fools to plan it this way. I guess time and ratings will tell if this works better.

ReplyDeleteOuaT & Revenge do well in the fall but during the second half of the season both shows have suffered from a significant drop in ratings. I'm really curious if this change in the schedule will bring different results.

ReplyDeleteResurrection and The Quest are mid-season replacements. At this moment, there are no free time slots, so ABC has to wait for shows to be cancelled to set new mid-season premiere dates.

ReplyDeleteI have to say that I prefer the scheduling like it used to be. I can do with 2 to 4 week breaks between episode, but a 4 month break once in the summer and latter in the winter is too much.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what is "The Quest". I paid close attention to the series orders this year and I have never heard of it. Was itpicked up last year?
This sucks!!! I mean come on one 3 month break is bad enough why not throw in another one why were at it! I can't believe I'm saying this but it looks like I'll be watching a whole lot of NBC and the CW which is really hard to believe.

ReplyDeleteIf Betrayal is a success and they really want to extend it they could fit more episodes before Resurrection premieres. I will check it out with an open mind, but I honestly doubt Betrayal will be a big hit.
That is what made Grimm's break 4 months long and it looks like these will be about 3 months themselves. Maybe being one month less will make it easier to take.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they are saying that The Quest will stay in Grey's Anatomy's time slot until Wonderland finishes its season and then The Quest will go into Wonderland's slot when Grey's Anatomy comes back? That would put Wonderland's finale mid-February. Of course I have no idea if this is correct or not. For all I know they have something else in place of Grey's during that time. I don't watch Grey's so I don't know if they normally replace it with reality TV or something.

ReplyDeleteI think the plan was correct in Grimm's case but it was just way over the top the 4 months. Same thing goes for Revolution. I think 2/3 months is the ideal. IMO, they should have the shows go into December as much as possible and then bring them back late February, which seems to be what ABC is doing. That is 2.5 months of hiatus which is bearable IMO. 4 months is too much, I agree
ReplyDeleteI am very curious to see the levels at which they premiere. I would hope for levels significantly better than their finales but I am not hopeful at all unfortunately. Even though all this is great, I think the damage is already done. I hope to be wrong though

ReplyDeleteI pray that after it's initial run of episodes, they announce this season to be Greys' last & when we return in feb we have the momentum and time to end it properly. Viewership would spike for sure, and honestly, much as I love Greys', I just can't see them sustaining past 10 - ratings or quality wise.

ReplyDelete2 month breaks aren't too bad usually. After that it gets iffy for me. I could see this being the new network plan if the ratings are relatively stable.
ReplyDeleteI agree in general albeit with some caveats. The first one, and that one doesn't happen every year, is the Winter Olympics. It is wiser to expect for late February so that they can be over. The second one is that as far as sunday shows are concerned (revenge and ouat) they should avoid awards season all together so as to avoid taking ratings hits. Other than these cases, in general I don't see anything wrong with what you say, I am quite indifferent.

ReplyDeleteThe Winter Olympics does change everything for this season. I understand why ABC is implementing the schedule that it is. It feels like they are starting the Olympics a bit earlier too which leaves networks with either doing 4 weeks of new shows and then taking 2/3 weeks off, waiting to come back from midseason later like ABC, or going up against the Olympics - not preferable.

ReplyDeleteABC president, Paul Lee, stated that he has no intention of ending GA after this season and that Shonda is already planning ahead for future seasons. While the show might not be what it used to be, both ratings and quality wise, it has been able to hold its own and narratively, they are at a good point even after 9 seasons which is mainly due to the huge ensemble cast. THe show ain't going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. ABC scheduling is always so screwed up with way too many breaks. So I'm glad to see they're trying to minimize that this year. Here's hoping they stink to this plans and do throw mini hiatuses in between anyway....

You're exaggerating, there were at least two episodes each month, except for September & December.
ReplyDeleteWith the 5 Dramas premiering late Sep./early Oct., it'll take until December to finish the first batch. I doubt ABC will premiere a new series in December, so the earliest possible date would be January. But with the 5 Dramas returning in late Feb./early Mar., I'm not sure that leaves enough room for a new midseason show that turned out to be successful to air all episdes of their first season which most likely will have 13 episodes.

ReplyDeleteI actually do not blame NBC for starting their season so early last year because they capitalized on their summer Olympics coverage with it. It was a smart move ratings wise. It just sucked during hiatus.

ReplyDeleteOh I agree with you 100%. Both on the Olympics and on Sundays, especially on Sundays actually. I spent last year arguing that ABC should move DWTS there and just be done with it. Sundays is definitely not the place for serialized shows. But it appears that what is obvious to us is something networks refuse to recognize..
ReplyDeleteWell technically some first year shows don't even have 13 episodes. Scandal had 7 for example if I am not mistaken and that is something they can easily air in January and February. They would doom the shows for sure but it is doable. Paul Lee has hinted that Killer Women was going to air that period so I guess it will play the role of sacrificial lamb. But I do think reality will fill most of it. The other one left, Mind Game, will probably replace Lucky 7 when it flops.
