24 - Season 9 - Will film abroad, possibly Europe

"Most, if not all" of 24 season 9 (also known as "Live Another Day") will take place outside of the US, says 24 executive producer David Fury, and it will "probably" take place in Europe. But even if the writers have a good idea of where they want the action to be set, "nothing is confirmed" as of now.

Here's what Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said at the TCAs :

"This is going to be set in an international setting. They've got great ideas, I love doing it this way. I have been really heartened by the amount of equity left in the show, I'm stopped by fans all the time, thanking me for bringing it back. Chloe will be central to Jack Bauer's new story, they have a really powerful arc for her in the next chapter. I'm pretty sure that will be it for returning cast, but there are several new characters joining."

So where will mayhem take place ?

Will it be the UK, Ireland or Malta, where Jack could get by a lot easier given these are the only places in Europe where English is an official language ?

Will it be Germany, where they could tie the story of Live Another Day to some of the dark areas of seasons 1-2 (Mandy, Max, Trepkos, the people pulling the strings of the assassination attempts on David Palmer) ?

Will it be France (:)), where it's now even more profitable for foreign productions to come and film (and where Donald Sutherland has a house, so if he happens to want to act in front of his son, he could come by) ?

Place your bets !

And here are interesting bits of an interview Howard Gordon did at the TCAs a few days ago :

"We'll keep it a 24 hour story but we'll tell 7-8, 8:15-9:15, 10-11 and then skip 3 hours if we need to. I think it's going to actually make us not have to do the pretzel logic of some of the stuff. It's still early, we're still full of hope, but I'm sure in about 3 weeks, I’ll be under the table crying."

About returning supporting players : "We literally just started so we don’t have the story locked down, we’re sort of exploring who’s out there and retrofitting people who are interesting."

Given that 24: LAD picks up 4 years after Day 8, "there's enough time for a new president. Even then, you have to ask how don't you take the fact that we've been through 6 presidents (Palmer, Keeler, Logan, Palmer Jr, Daniels, Taylor) ? When you've taken the archetypes of the presidents, how do you do something new? That’s the trick. How do you keep telling the story that's being told forward and not double back on yourself?"

And finally, here are two heartwarming tweets :

Writing is on-going, casting news will start appearing late this fall, filming will begin early 2014 for a May première.

  2. Actually, it is. It is just being called 'Live Another Day' but it is still classed as the 9th season of the show.

  3. It`s not. It`s a miniseries or event like FOX stated during TCA`s and the upfronts.

  4. Please bring back Audrey, Kim and Aaron! :)
Filming in Budapest is cheap and looks awesome. Come here to us! ;)

  5. I like this idea of filming outside the US if only for a few episodes then returning to the States for the remaining episodes, makes sense given how S8 ended with Jack being forced to leave the States.

  6. As long as the story is good, film where ever you want.

  7. Amsterdam as the hide out for Jack after day 8 and The Hague for the action of day 9 considering it is the legal capital of the World where international criminals are brought to justice.

  8. Actually, many articles are stating that it's both, Season 9 and a mini series. So in a way, both of you are right haha

  9. SO excited that Jack and Chloe are going to be back! Loved 24.
I hope the storyline is excellent! And I hope they bring back Aaron as well.

  10. Yes, but when FOX and the producers says it`s a reboot and a miniseries, it`s not season 9. SpoilerTV dosent work at FOX or with the series. So you should go after what the people behind the show and the channel says. And it`s 12-episodes, so it`s a miniseries not a season 9, because it`s not 24 episodes.

  12. with Jack having to go on the run, it would make sense that he might have to go abroad. and with Donald Sutherland appearing in the European based Crossing Lines, I'd think that it'd be cool if they used some of the same locales (which have been many). Looking forward to seeing how things progress

  13. Plenty of shows have seasons that have less episodes than the usual 22-24. Take the Season 1 of Scandal for example.

  14. Love the idea of it being set outside the US, only time I can recall it ever being so was in the TV movie Redemption. And while Jack/Chloe are who I wanted most to return (well Jack was a given), I'd also like to see Kim, Audrey, possibly Tony, and Mandy.

I wonder if after 4 years Jack is still on the run........I hope they conclude that plotline in first few episode..........I think Jack wil either work for Mi6 or CIA in exchange for criminal charge drop against him............should continue with the Russian plot

  16. Does it really matter if the producers call it a "event series" or a "miniseries"? They have already said they are not ruling our future 24 "event series". This is the 9th year 24 will air, and might as well be called Season 9. "Event series" just means that FOX can wait a year or two before they film Season 10, instead of having to shoot yearly.

  17. There's a difference. Scandal was launched as a new series late mid-season. You can only have so many episodes weekly when a show starts mid-season, especially that late. '24' had to do 2-nights, 4-hour premieres, airing 2 episodes in the middle of the season and at the end of the season in order to air all its episodes starting in January and ending in May.

  18. Look, guys, there's not a clear-cut answer to this question yet, we will just have to wait and see the show to make up our minds if the show is indeed Season 09, or a brand new series that builds on the original one. I personally feel the differences are too big for 'Live Another Day' to be counted as Season 09 given that it only has 12 episodes, not real-time, only two cast members are returning, it's not taking place in the United States and the official press release doesn't use any words to say or indicate that this is Season 09. This is, however, my opinion before the show has premiered, and I might change my mind when I get to see the show. But at this point, I don't think any of us have enough evidence to call this Season 09 or Season 01 yet.

What can we call it, you say? '24: Live Another Day' is the official name for it, don't get confused in Season 01/09 yet.

  19. That isn't indicated anywhere in the *official* press release. Just because Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian is there, we can't automatically assume it's the 9th season. Call it what it is - '24: Live Another Day' until we know for sure ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. This is not the 9th year '24' will air. There has been several years since '24' was cancelled. Your logic isn't so logic.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Of course its been of the air for years, lol. I just meant this is the 9th time it will air was all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't agree. As stated in the official press release, this is a new series. It's not '24' returning, it's a brand new one. So following that, it is not the 9th year of '24'. However, whether I will call it Season 01 or Season 09 will be determined when I actually get to see 'Live Another Day'. But if it had been "just the 9th season", they might as well (and should have) announced it as '24' returning, instead of repeatedly describing it as a 'new' series.

This whole thing gets pretty confusing. It's all about what the official information is, and not what we all want it to be. I would love it to be the 9th season of '24', but the way the press release describes it, I can't say I'm so certain about that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Okay then... I'll just say I agree with you but this is the 9TH time a season of *something* has been made with Kiefer Sutherland playing a character named Jack Bauer, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is indeed, but there are other shows out there where the original series has been cancelled, and a new series has been made years later, with some of the same cast returning and yet the new series is titled as Season 01 officially. So even though it is indeed the 9th time a season will air with Jack Bauer, it is difficult as of now to determine if it's the 9th season, or a new series, hehe.

Now I'm going to bed, fun talking to you! :D

  25. Ah, yes you make a good point. Mission Impossible looped back to Season 01 even tho Peter Graves returned in the reboot.

  26. 24 is by far my favorite TV show of the last year. Very exited to know Jack is back !
