Frankly If I could I would just select all BTVS finales as all of them were thrilling and air-gasping conclusions to each season.
Since I can't, I have to go with Becoming, The Gift, Grave and Restless.
Becoming was the literal "STUFF GOT REAL" finale. The show grew up, the mood of the show shifted, the fact that good guys won't always get happy endings was established and various character flaws of various characters were highlighted. Also - Buffy and Spike WORKING TOGETHER FOR FIRST TIME ASDASFASDASF;
Restless was outright one of THE best episodes in entire show. Full of foreshadowing and that Twin Peaks-y atmosphere. Most meaningful and the most well-shot episode. It was also unusual season finale, but it perfectly summed up the character journeys of first half of the show (childhood, S1 to S3, with S4 as interlude) leading to the second half of the show, adulthood.
The Gift - was just outright depressing and sad piece that still gets emotional response out of me. Who would have thought that Whedon would outright KILL OFF the lead character in the end of season? Certainly not me, even though there were signs of Buffy's depression already and the idea that she might forsake this world in exchange for eternal peace, especially if her sister, made from her, and shaped in her season one image, gets to live the Buffy-Life that Buffy herself never got. THE FEELS.
The Grave is also depressing and shocking and thrilling. By this point Whedon has already trained us REAL WELL to fear for the life of every single character and this finale put them ALL in danger. I barely got back from the shock caused by Tara's death and still felt shocked and breathless at what has become of Willow and this was a satisfying pay off of the themes represented in this season, showcasing the flawed nature of each character and the hopelessness of their lives, as well as their will to move forward, hoping that future will not be as dark. And then Spike and his soul and "wait WHAT?". FEELS.
Chosen, The Gift, Becoming, and i know Buffy Season 4 ended Restless but the episode before that Primeval is one of my favs and prob should of been the finale
love this poll as I love both series! tough choices but for Buffy, my all time favorite finale (out of both series) has to be the Gift, as it was originally intended to be a series ending - bittersweet and heartbreaking, it was a masterpiece. After that, I'd have to pick Prophecy Girl, Graduation Day, and then Chosen. On the Angel side: my fave is Not Fade Away and then There's no place like Plrtz Glrb....
oh my goodness, this poll give me so many feelings about the Season finales of Buffy. Becoming part II, The Gift, Restless and Grave are all emotional and thrilling.
Becoming Part II - "Take it all away, and what do you have left?” “Me”.
Restless - so many symbologies. A truly classic.
'The Gift' - such a powerful episode! The gang working together to save the world, and How forget the final scene with Buffy's grave: "’Buffy Anne Summers. 1981-2001. Beloved Sister. Devoted Friend. She Saved The World a lot."
'Grave'- Dark Willow. Definitely one of the most shocking and heartbreaking finales.
Man, i really miss Buffy. good thing that i have all the series in my collection to rewatch any time.
Becoming's was the best episode ever Buffy and Spike teaming up never expected that killing Angel Joyce finding out. I love this episode other finals are great but nothing beats this
What I can choose are the season finales I least liked that were Restless for Buffy (still don't get it) and There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb for Angel. The rest were emotional, had good moments, and are part of what makes me return to revisit those shows every several years.
I only watched Buffy of the two. Voted for Prophecy Girl, Becoming, Graduation Day and The Gift. Four beautiful, emotional, powerful hours of TV that demonstrate why Buffy - despite the major erosion in its quality from Season 4 onwards - is considered one of the best shows in the history of television.
From the list, Grave for Xander saving the day, showing that heart and not mystical power was the more important.
But really, my favorite finale/final battle was Primeval, even though Restless was the last episode that season. I measure all ensemble shows genre shows against it. Not that I didn't like Restless it was super important, but like the story, it was a recovery episode and not so much an edge of your seat finale.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
The Gift, always ! I rarely saw an episode so emotional... This episode mixes brilliantly love, suspense, horror, happiness and drama !
ReplyDeleteThe Gift, some of the most emotional minutes in TV.

The Gift. A great emotional episode for a great emotional season.

ReplyDeleteCan't choose... will not choose. NO! I refuse to be made to pick from the awesomeness!
ReplyDeleteFine, I'll say a bit of a personal fave: There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb.
But I'm not voting because it's not fair pick just five!
-Not Fade Away is hands down one of the best finales I've ever seen.
ReplyDelete-The Gift was excellent. Too bad the next two seasons kind of ruined it.
I really enjoyed all of Angel's finales.
