"The Vampire Diaries" is a fan-favorite at San Diego Comic-Con, and now its spinoff "The Originals" made its big premiere with its first-ever panel. Some new video was shown, but the bulk of the panel focused on introducing these familiar and new characters to the audience in attendance beyond what they saw in "The Originals'" backdoor pilot.
In addition to a sizzle reel, an alternate ending featuring a witch locked up in an attic by Marcel was screened that showed a different taste of the direction "The Originals" is taking. Plec promises this character is one of the big mysteries in Season 1 that will be dealt with right off the bat. The pilot was already shown on preview night, but it turns out that the show's actual first episode will be a retelling of what fans saw back in April.
"Elijah goes to New Orleans to figure out what his brother is up to," showrunner Julie Plec teases. "We'll see similar scenes and moments that we didn't get to see in the pilot."
Rebekah won't appear in New Orleans until episode 2 because she has her own story to finish. "She's still hoochin' it up with Matt Donovan," Plec says. Rebekah will also appear in the premiere episode of "The Vampire Diaries," which will see her storyline with Matt come to a close. "Something will bring her to new Orleans in the second episode with an ... agenda," Plec says.
Rebekah isn't the only one leaving someone behind in Mystic Falls. Elijah also had to say farewell to Katherine. "I 100 percent thinks he still has feelings for Katherine, but the level of his devotion to his family [comes first]," Daniel Gillies says of Elijah's departure.
Then there are Klaroline fans, who aren't super happy about Klaus having a new baby mama. Expect that the Klaus and Caroline relationship will still be dealt with. "It's not like she doesn't exist," Plec says. "If anything she's sort of like the Buffy to his Angel. She made an impact on him." Joseph Morgan adds of the seeming end of that relationship, "It's all I hear about."

"If anything she´s sort of like Buffy to his Angel" - Never laughed that hard before.
ReplyDeleteI call it now. They are going to kill-off Tyler this season on TVD and have a crossover with Klaus coming to cheer up Caroline, similar to Angel coming to help Buffy after her mom died.
What's this junk about a "retelling" of the backdoor pilot for the series premiere? Maybe I'm nitpicking since it's just a single episode but I don't care for this.
ReplyDeleteIt's no big deal to me. I never really warmed up to Tyler and I know TVD & The Originals were bound to crossover at some point so... sure, whatever.
ReplyDeleteDo you really see a similarity betwenn Caroline-Klaus and Buffy-Angel?
ReplyDeleteNot really but I tend not to take comments and comparisons like that very seriously.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but it leaves me actually a little afraid when the showrunner of the show has such a misconception of her own characters.
ReplyDeleteIf Plec, by making the comparison, was simply trying to say that Caroline's influence makes Klaus a better person than he would be otherwise then it's not a misconception of her characters.
ReplyDeleteDo you know Buffy and Angel? If she would´ve wanted to give your point, then it would (to stay in-verse) Buffy and Spike.
ReplyDeletePretty sure Buffy/Angel would be offended by that comparison.
ReplyDelete1st - Yes I do.
ReplyDelete2nd- If she really wanted to make the point clear, she could have just said "I'm just duplicating the basic template for Damon and Elena" but that probably wouldn't have went over too well.
3rd- She also could have meant by Buffy/Angel that Klaus, like Angel, got his own show but kept popping in and out of Buffy's life because they always maintained a connection.
"Pretty sure Buffy/Angel would be offended by that comparison"
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Either way Caroline is but eyecandy for Klaus (feelings aside she has done squat when it comes to lasting changes). She has yet to do anything truly significant with Klaus. Honestly I just feel as if Plec had no foundation to base that comment upon. There are tons of other character pairs she could've brought up to get behind this entire Klaus / Caroline ordeal, but she just had to go with the most well known vampire pairing, right?
ReplyDeleteWas the Buffy/Angel comment the single most apt comparison that Plec could have made on the fly? No. Was the comment way off base? Also no.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me, that's great. I hated how the pilot was constrained within TVD. By redoing it, they are making it a part of The Originals and not just an episode of TVD that has the potential to turn into a spinoff.
ReplyDeleteA series premiere shouldn't be a rehash of old material. If they want to revisit the backdoor pilot, they should just use the alternate cut of the pilot that screened for the network in the spring (with the all the footage they had to cut) without the TVD stuff in it and air the episode the week before the real series premiere.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that they aren't going to throw the entire episode we saw in the spring out, maybe just take out scenes for new ones and add different music and lighting to give it a different look and feel like they did for the trailer where we got to see the vibrant colors and a more big city look to it (bc that episode just looked like Mystic Falls around the corner, with the same tone, lighting, and camera work). And probably by adding whatever they had to cut out for the TVD episode, the pilot is going to be different depending on if they had to heavily edit the scenes that we saw already.
ReplyDeletePretty sure they're fictional characters.
ReplyDeleteSo... Basically what they said.
ReplyDeleteNo. How is what I said and this:
ReplyDelete(The pilot was already shown on preview night, but it turns out that the show's actual first episode will be a retelling of what fans saw back in April.) anything close to similar?
Great thing they're redoing the pilot. It was absolute garbage the first time around IMO, hope it's more coherent this time.
ReplyDeleteI won't mind a "retelling" of the backdoor pilot if it's done maybe from another character's perspective (like, we see Marcel's side more and how Klaus' coming to New Orleans affects him). I just don't want it to be the same episode with 4 more scenes. Meh.
ReplyDeleteThe same way that TVD is not Buffy (despite JP's claims) The Originals will never be Angel!
ReplyDeleteHaving said that I do think this show has the potential to be better than TVD.
Geez, you really are taking this comment too literally. She's not saying "Caroline and Klaus are EXACTLY the same as Buffy-Angel", the relationship dynamic is similar in that both Klaus and Angel were looking for someone and they finally found that love only to have to leave them to move on to something else. Their relationship story lines have been close, not the actual characters themselves.
ReplyDeleteI would re-air the TVD S4 finale the week before (Oct 3) the premiere at 8 pm (Oct 10) and then TVD 4.20 - as is - at 9 PM and then a "original" ;) "The Original" on Oct 15, so the material from the backdoor pilot would still be fresh in fans' minds. But evidently The CW decided differently. I think a completely original episode TO would stand a better chance against ABC's "Agents of Shield".
