Thanks to Darthlocke for the heads up.

The cable network, which previewed Ron Moore's Helix at Comic-Con, is adapting Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature 12 Monkeys, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, Cole will use an imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

  1. Wait what??? 12 Monkeys is one of my favourite sci-fi films really not comfortable with Sy Fy doing this unless they get some good talent to do it.

  2. I'm not holding my breath on this one. This is the same network who had a reboot of Alien Nation in the works just a few years ago and that project disappeared into the ether.

  3. Lmao. Being honest, I read this as "Syfy developing 12 monkey shows". I was like wow, how many shows can you have about monkeys before it gets old. Now I feel stupid XD

Yeah, I always thought this movie ultimately proved Brad Pitt wan't just a pretty face but actually a good actor. You'd need a couple of actors to pull of stark raving mad perfectly to make a good show.

  5. I have mixed feelings too! But if they flesh out the premise with more time travelers and give it a good cast, then it might turn out alright. One of my favorite time traveling movies, so I wish it the best.

  6. Just read that as ''SyFy developing 12 monkey shows''. As in twelve different shows with monkeys. I was slightly confused. (In my defense, I'm really tired.)

Anyway, I'm not sure how I feel about this. If they put some time, effort and money in it, it might turn out great. But I fear it's more likely that they'll butcher it...

  7. Honestly, I think I'm the only one who didn't like that movie... I very much doubt I'll like this but it's sci fi, so I'll give it a shot whenever it starts.

  8. Oh, you beat me to it, my fellow stupid-feeling person! *High five*

  9. I did as well xD

  10. Don't feel stupid. This guy is the head of programming development at Syfy:

  11. Ugh, as if the movie wasn't bad enough.

  12. Probably won't last past a season, if it even makes it that far.

  13. God, no!
Love the movie. Can't say the same about the network.

  14. Will it be as high budget as Sharknado? :P

  15. I was thinking that a show about 12 monkeys may be a documentary of the behind-the-scenes day-to-day activities of SyFy Network executives, but that would be degrading to monkeys everywhere.

  16. Movie was a mess!
I can see potential for a serial format that could possibly clean up that mess, but I am not hopeful.

  17. Nope. You are not alone. I also think it could only be good if it's NOT like the movie was.

  18. You are not alone.

  19. Ha! XD
guess we had the same thought process!

  20. That'd be the best case scenario, but I'm with you, I am not hopeful.

  21. I was slightly confused. (In my defense, I'm really tired.)

  22. Well,count me in.

  23. No they need the money for the sequel Sharknado 2....and i'm serious!

  24. Why is this happening? SyFy already has a Time Travel series...................IT'S CALLED CONTINUUM, and it's a great series! There's no need for a second series of this genre. This is like having the "Office UK" and the "Office US" on the same network/channel........WTH? 4 A SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIENCE, I am still Nobody!!!

  25. I liked the movie, I think they could do something very interesting--there is a lot of conspiracy left to consider with just that premise. Especially if they move through time a lot. But it could easily become a confusing mess, or so simple it isn't exciting. Bruce Willis and Brad PItt really carried the movie. I feel like casting and art direction are going to be key.

  26. I would much rather have the Alien Nation project.

  27. I couldn't stand the movie either. This inspires nothing from me.

  28. Ha! What's not funny is that Sharknado was actually successful for them. And people wonder why they keep making such cheesy movies. Answer - the people watching them. They need to automatically take Nielsen boxes away from anyone who can legitimately say that they watched Jersey Shore on even a semi-regular basis.

  29. One would be developed by them rather than bought off another network like Continuum so they get more control over how it's developed.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Very good point, but Continuum is already a hit for SyFy so why try for another hit series of the same theme/genre is my question? 4 A SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIENCE, I am Nobody!!!

  31. The premise could work in TV series format but I don't know, there's way too many unknown variables to make a judgement over how I feel about this...
