new info about the spin-off, which is currently
scheduled to be introduced to viewers in episode
20 of the upcoming new season.
In the Chicago-set episode, Carver said we’ll be introduced to a show that would, if picked up by the network, “explore the clashing monster and human characters” living in the city. In fact, he said, “we’ll have main characters who are both human and monsters.” That will include, added Singer, “families of monsters and families of hunters.” “It’s much more of an ensemble than Supernatural ,” Singer said.

ReplyDeleteCW is really obsessed with spin-offs.
ReplyDeleteWell they only have three shows that are really working TVD, Arrow and Supernatural. They know that Jensen and Jared have been on a long time and they have to plan for the chance that they will both leave after their contract is up at the end of season 10. So, they are getting a head start on it now. Plus if the spinoff clicks, they don't HAVE to work as hard to keep Jared and Jensen onboard Supernatural. It's a strategic move.

ReplyDeleteI'd say they are really obsessed with keeping the network from folding in 2 years. Spin-offs of successful shows need less marketing and already have in-house generated interest. The simple fact is that the CW must have more successful shows to survive. It currently has 3. The easiest way to get that audience to watch other things on the network is to tie in with what they are already watching.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting more and more curious about this. This seems like the kind of spin-off that takes the existing mythology and delves deeper into it, looking at it from different angles similar to what OuaTW in doing - same mythology, different approach.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought that there should be more to the monsters than just being the job of the week and the show kind of adressed that with S6 but I think they've barely scratched the surface and that there is much more to tell.
Kinda sounds a bit like what Angel was compared to Buffy where there was more of the monster subculture being explore. So let me guess... one of the main characters will be a hunter who just happens to have a problem around the full moon.

ReplyDeleteThey are using the glorious name of Supernatural to cover a Being Human rip off, and there will be no Jared and Jensen to sweeten the pot but some family with half-monster kids or something. Oh well
Mr. Carver and Mr. Singer, here's a cool idea: Make a spin-off set as a prequel to the events of Supernatural, about Bobby and Rufus hunting together with some other hunter cameo's that you have mentioned or not shown quite enough in the series (John Winchester, Caleb, William Harvelle, Daniel Elkins, Lee Chambers etc.). You have basically everything set up:
ReplyDelete- Two popular and loved characters that share a past (lots and lots of events you could show, like what exactly happened in Omaha), make a great hunting duo, similar attitudes like Sam and Dean,
- The lore, the setting, everything is already established in SPN, you don't need a "back door pilot",
- Explore clashing monster and human character? What precisely do you want to explore? When both clash, either one or the other loses his head.
- Expand Bobby's past, his relationship with Dr. Visyak, maybe even see a young Sam and Dean
- How did Rufus become a hunter? Show the moment when he helped Bobby with his wife and they met,
And much much more... seriously just think about all the possibilities.
But most of all, it's a safe idea. Otherwise you can risk the city monster nonsense and share the fate of the Bones spin-off. "The Finder" where sadly, the only thing he couldn't find was an audience.
Leaning towards I probably won't like it, but still trying not to judge until I see it.

ReplyDeleteNow THIS sounds more promising! So could we have some of our angel family back? Like say Richard Speight Jr? Demore Barnes? Rob Benedict? And what about our vampire family? Papa himself, Rick Worthy? Ty Olsson? And for hunters - how about Kim Rhodes? Sheriff Mills needs to get out of South Dakota!! The windy city seems like a perfect upgrade!

ReplyDeleteMaybe it wasn't continuously 'glorious' but up until the end of season seven, I certainly enjoyed it.
Season four wasn't one of my favourites, but everyone's taste is different.
It gives them a chance to delve back into the urban legends that have been left behind for so long. We could also get a bigger variety of monsters other than just demons and angels, which have taken up so much focus. I think the menagerie of monsters they can add to this show is fascinating.

ReplyDeleteAlso the show stopped even pretending to try and be scary afterwards. It felt more like an action/drama than horror/supernatural/drama.

ReplyDeletefirst we have in supernatural: being half is not a good thing aka SAM, being friends with monsters is not a good thing, both SAM and DEAN, with Benny and Jules(from Firefly) who play some monster friend of SAM. both ended badly. and now this spin off is going to air in between Supernatural, and Sam and Dean gonna look at them for a episode and are gonna leave that town saying its cool they are doing good? yea way to make me believe(assumption i know, sue me).
Now that really would make it like Angel.

ReplyDeleteThis could be very good. Could possibly surpass the mothership if they get some decent writers on it. After all, Angel became a much better show than Buffy (I still want to know what the Buffy writers were smoking in seasons 4,6, and 7).

ReplyDeleteExactly what it sounds like to me. The shine wore offa that show with me after the first season. I couldn't bother with the UK version after they recast Annie. She was the entire reason I lobbied to get the show picked up.

ReplyDeleteSeason 4 blamed Sam for not being OK after seeing his brother die. And they had Dean not being happy that Sam was not OK after the deal he put him through. So right from the off we had a offensive Dean towards Sam and it set the tone for the season and then we had Sam's story in the background so we can have the developing Dean and Castiel relationship . And screw it wether the audience either cared or sympathized with Sam just so we can have a scapegoat for all that was wrong . Not a fan of season 4 .

Yeah, the angels have turned out to be one of the worst thing introduced and there seems to be no way to get rid of them; now they've invaded the Earth too.:)
ReplyDeleteI felt so sorry for Sam and for the brothers' relationship in season four; ,and season five was depressing but the srory-lines had a logic and a reason so I'm okay with them
Sam was treated badly, but he was originally designed from the beginning as the 'sweet little brother who had a vein of evil in him' and he had to walk down that thorny path, which he did, but he never lost that sweetness even when he seemed to have capitulated.to evil

I agree that SPN went from horror to action/drama but now it's no longer even that. .Now it's an illogical mish -mash.
First thought of reading this is Bobby, as a human hopefully. Main inhuman characters would be Anna? and you would think Metraton would have a substanial role to play because he's the baddie.

“It’s much more of an ensemble than Supernatural" now that is the one thing keeping me interested even if I stopped with the main show after S6. Having an ensemble with like regular female characters who don't get killed would be pretty good.

ReplyDeleteI hope they delve more into the Shtriga from season 1, episode 18, Something Wicked. That was honestly one of scariest/creepiest episodes. Something about putting kids/babies in danger that freaks me out..

ReplyDeleteI'm still weary about this idea, but I'm absolutely on board with the format they're going with. Differentiating themselves from SPN as much as they can is the way to go. It can be a show that functions in the same world, and abides by the same rules, but is shouldn't be a SPN copy.
ReplyDeleteSo it's comforting to see that they're approaching this from the right angle. (Now I only wish Eric was somewhat involved in the spin off... for some reason that would put me more at ease)
