Practicing Magic: TV's Most Mesmerizing Witches

For those Vampire Diaries fans still mourning the untimely passing of Bonnie Bennett in the season four finale, don't write her off just yet. It appears Bonnie will be returning for season five. The question is will she still have the capacity to utilize her gifts in the afterlife? As we've learned from past episodes, dead witches can still retain the ability to tap into their powers. But, if Bonnie is truly no longer a witchy woman, don't fret, because fans of enchantresses of either the good or bad variety can look forward to some fresh faces eager to cast a spell over viewers later this year.

Lifetime's scripted series Witches of East End will focus on the lives of Joanna Beauchamp (Julia Ormond) and her daughters, Freya (Jenna Dewan-Tatum), and Ingrid (Rachel Boston). The series is loosely based on the book written by Melissa de la Cruz.

But, if you feel a lack of mystical energy in your life, and you are jonesing for some supernatural sirens, let's pay homage to some of TV's most recognizable witches.

Samantha Stephens (Bewitched)- Samantha swore that once she married advertising executive Darrin, she would live her life as an ordinary housewife. But, nosy neighbors, a meddling mother and assorted other complications forced this witch to call on her powers on a regular basis. What woman wouldn't love to solve her problems with just a twitch of her nose?

Bonnie Bennett (The Vampire Diaries)- The last in a long line of very powerful witches, Bonnie temporarily lost her mojo after using her gift, governed by the laws of nature, to do some very dark magic. Her powers were restored in a bastardized and wicked incarnation called "Expression" by a devious mentor. This former good girl managed to resurrect the world's oldest immortal who promises to have an unpleasant agenda. Bonnie redeemed herself somewhat by bringing her best friend Elena's brother back from the dead by taking his place.

Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)- Willow's interest in the occult arose after restoring Buffy's good
vamp gone bad boyfriend Angel during the show's second season. Her interest turned into addiction and arrogance illustrated best when she raised her bestie Buffy from the dead in season six. Willow went full on wicked after the death of her girlfriend which caused her to seek vengeance and murder one of the season's mortal protagonists. In the seventh and final season, viewers learned that when Willow resurrected Buffy she unleashed "The First," the source of all evil. When will these witches learn you can't mess with Mother Nature?

Melisandre (Game of Thrones)- Viewers might view Melisandre as more of a master manipulator than a witch except for the fact that she gave birth to a black smoke monster that killed Renly Baratheon. She has psychic abilities and might be immortal or at least resistant to attempts made by other to cause her bodily harm. Her sole purpose is to serve the "Lord of Light," and her connection to this deity might also be the source of her power. She also loves to set things on fire, especially people - kind of an ironic hobby for a witch.

Antonia/Marnie Stonebrooke (True Blood)- Antonia was a powerful witch in the 17th century, who, along with her coven, were tortured and killed by vampires. Marnie, a medium and head of a Wiccan group, called upon Antonia's spirit and harnessed her energy to do some very naughty things. After Marnie/Antonia's quest for revenge against vampires became all consuming, she alienated her own coven, held them prisoner and even murdered an innocent member. Marnie was such bad news even Antonia tried to vacate her body. Even after her death, Marnie remained hell bent on creating mayhem but was eventually metaphorically shown the door by Antonia.

Piper, Prue and Phoebe Halliwell (Charmed)- You just know a show's going to be cool when the theme song is a cover of The Smith's "How Soon Is Now?." Throw in three hot witches, all sisters, into the mix, and you've got a hit. Piper, Prue and Phoebe weren't just your run of the mill witches, they were the most powerful witches in existence, whose collective destiny was to save the world from a staggering number of supernatural baddies. They did a great job until Prue bit the dust season three. How lucky for the remaining two there just happened to be a half-sister waiting in the wings.

Regina Mills/Evil Queen (Once Upon a Time)- Desperate for love and acceptance but doomed to make bad choices,
Regina's motivations for her dastardly deeds aren't always black and white. True, she loves invoking a good curse and ripping out hearts. She's jealous, vindictive and unforgiving but is capable of love and enjoys apple pancakes. Regina embodies all of the worst characteristics of human nature but also some of the best.

Cassie Blake (The Secret Circle)- After the death of her mother, Cassie went to live with her grandmother in the town of Chance Harbor. Her bags weren't even unpacked before she found out she was the integral component necessary to bind together a powerful group of teenage witches. Cassie was the most powerful witch in her coven due to the fact that both of her parents were witches as well; her father's powers stemmed from dark forces and her mother's from good. Cassie struggled to find a balance between these conflicting origins of her power. She had the power to manipulate air and wind, move objects with her mind and create light.

Cassie Hughes (Hex)- Cassie came from a long line of witches but didn't uncover her lineage or discover her powers until she attended a rural boarding school in England. Cassie had telekinetic, pyrokinetic and clairvoyant powers, but could only access them when in stressful situations. Cassie's closest confidant was a lesbian ghost named Thelma who tried to help Cassie thwart the evil plans of Cassie's nemesis/lover, fallen angel Azazeal.

Faye Chamberlain (The Secret Circle)- Faye was brash, sexy and free-spirited. She was often impetuous when she used her powers which had disastrous consequences on several occasions. Faye did not relish being beholden to the other members of the circle for her actions and was constantly looking for ways to assert her independence. In terms of personality, Faye was the polar opposite of Cassie. Faye had the ability to control the weather and manipulate electricity as well as being telekinetic.
