Sean Maguire in ‘Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire’
Someone has made like the Prince of Thieves and “stolen” the role of Robin Hood for Once Upon a Time Season 3.
With Merlin‘s Tom Ellis, as previously reported, unavailable to return to the role he played in the Belle-centric Season 2 episode “Lacey,” fellow Brit Sean Maguire will play the character for a recurring arc, TVLine has learned exclusively.

I can't even get up any enthusiasm. I liked the way they used his character but all the other stuff in that episode was beyond screwed up.

ReplyDeleteThere's almost never a good reason to recast a role. The story rarely demands it because it is so easy to write in a new or old character to take the spot without hurting the storyline. He was hardly an established character with a lot of in-show mythology built up.

He wasn't my first choice but he okay wanted Tom Welling in the role but I give him a shot

ReplyDeleteThat's exactly why there's nothing wrong with this. The previous actor had a brief one-episode appearance, he isn't available to continue, and OUAT seems intent on continuing to use the character. This is the type of circumstance that makes the decision to recast a simple choice.
The only reason that would justify this recast is for the new storyline to involve Rumple and Belle again because than Robin Hood would be a necessity but I do agree with everything you said.

ReplyDeleteI would normally agree with you about recasting a roll but Robin Hood wasn't on the show long enough to establish himself as RH.
ReplyDeleteI'm ambivalent about the recasting since it's not as if we had a chance to get attached to the character in any way. I really didn't like how they basically made him and Marian throwaway roles for the sake of telling what was otherwise an excellent Rumbelle story. If they hadn't done that, they wouldn't need to recast. I just hope they do something more interesting with the character this time around.

ReplyDeleteI still remember Sean from his Grange hill days bless him! He comes from just down the road from where I grew up so Im looking forward to seeing him in this new role. Good luck to him.
ReplyDeleteI think there's potential to parallel them (Robin/Mary) to David/Charming and Mary Margaret/Snow, considering it most likely it was pregnant Lady Mary (Robin's significant other) who Robin was trying to help...
ReplyDeletePlus the theme of thieves will probably be stronger this season given Neverland with both Pirates and boys (and girls?) who never want to grow up...
Not to mention Ariel, the little utensil-stealer. :)

ReplyDeleteI didn't like robin hood the actor or the storyline in the episode. Personally I would prefer not to see robin hood again but if they insist on using robin hood than i'm really glad the recast him with a new actor. Hopefully this new actor will be good and not make me want to change the channel like the last guy.

ReplyDeleteRecasting in primetime is tacky (hell it's tacky in soaps too, but what can you do)... that's why reacting this is wrong.

ReplyDeleteThat's where we differ. Very few actors / actresses can claim that they "own a role." In those cases, recasting is impossible. In all other cases, it's just like any other job. If one person can't do the work they should feel free to hire someone who can.
I'm all for compromising the business with the creative where you can. I just don't think recasting is something you should compromise on.
ReplyDeleteBecause TV is a linear visual medium, I feel it's disrespectful to the storytelling.
It's not just about an actor owning a role or not. It causes mere continuity problems.
I guess I just don't feel the same way about any of this.
ReplyDeleteHe was on long enough for people to remember him though. It wasn't a one line role, where we barely got to see his face. And for me that is enough to establish him in the character, regardless of if I liked or disliked him, and it's enough of a reason to not be happy with this recast...
