Hostages - Not a Mini-Series

29 Jul 2013

On the heels of onetime-limited series Under the Dome ‘s renewal, the cast and producers of CBS’ new fall drama Hostages took the stage Monday at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in Beverly Hills to clarify their 15-episode order.

“This is not a miniseries for us,” executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed. “We’re doing 15 [episodes] and we’re hoping to get not only two seasons, but hopefully a lot more.”

Addressing the mini/event/limited series perception surrounding the show , EP Jonathan Littman explained: “When you’re doing something this intense and this much of a thriller, it’s hard to bang out 22 [episodes], with repeats and weeks that are off, and keep your suspense… The story of this show doesn’t work that way. It really has to be run in a row.”

  2. No but i thought it'd probably get cancelled. I'm going to watch pilot but i don't see it holding my attention in the long run.

  3. Well, yes. Because otherwise CBS would order 20 or 13 episodes instead of 15. So this is new to me. And Hostages really dont seem to have plot that should strech to long. I keep remembering Vanished, Kidnapped and maybe The Event when it comes to this show. It should have last around 15, not 20+ and more season as the networks hoped for.

  4. Not at all. I had never even heard it mentioned as a miniseries. I do wonder how they can keep the doctor involved in the premise though. I could see one season being about her trying to keep the president alive but then the second season would almost have to branch off into the larger picture.

  5. Yeah,me too! If anything i thought it would have one storyline per season. Thinking they could tell different 'Hostage' story next season...but i'm guessing,i have no idea how they plan on keeping this going for more than one season...

  6. I did not think it was a mini-series, but Icertainly did hope it was! XD
The title and the premise do not play well for a series of multiple years! Think of Prison Break and how terrible it was in the later years, not to mention the ill-fitting title.

  7. I wish more shows would be willing to take a chance and go off in a new directions at the end of the season. I think The Following would have benefited from killing off Ryan, Claire, and Joe and started with a new serial killer and a new lead detective. At the very least make this season the story of Mike trying to catch Emma. Either way it would be fresh instead of everyone either rising from the grave or recovering from their near death experiences. I have zero interest in watching brilliant Joe thwart the stupid police for another season. This one feels like it will have the same problem. It's an interesting premise but not a stretched out one.

  8. It could be interesting if the hostage was different each season. It could be the same terrorist cell with a big agenda but the people in the show would have to change. I mean exactly how long can this surgery take.

  9. IT certainly could be.

I personally get tired of those types of scenarios though. IT starts to feel repetitive to me. Plus if they are brilliant enough to plan multiple kidnappings to so many levels with such detail it gets harder to believe they are foiled season after season.

  10. If the main cast are still in their hostage situation at the season finale I will never watch this show.

  11. This is one of the shows I'm most excited about this upcoming season, so YAY! It feels even better when the guy said "not only two seasons, but hopefully a lot more". I know that's not a guarantee for a renewal, but it still brings a little peace to my mind knowing that it's *possible* :D

  12. I hear ya! It was an insult to the viewers thinking they could do that without people getting frustrated and angry by it..Even if they wanted to keep Ryan i could live with that, but everyone else...don't know if i'll be watching, but maybe by then it won't matter as much.

  13. I am actually good if they are not foiled every season...provided that the good guys get some wins along the way too. It gets less realistic if only one side wins every time

  14. I never thought it would be... which is why I am worried about the show's longevity.

  15. *nods* EXACTLY!

  16. Yeah with that kind of story line and with that kind of time frame i don't think they can make it to season 2 without losing at least half of it's watchers.

  17. I will give it a shot and I love the short seasons shown without breaks.

  18. This isn't the kind of show that needs multiple seasons, I was already wondering how'd they fill up an entire season with this story.
