Filming in Iceland began yesterday and will run until August 1 according to Morgunblaðið (The Morning Paper).
In addition to the previous location of Þingvellir listed here, there is now confirmation coming from Morgunblaðið that Game of Thrones will also be filming in Þjórsárdalur and Hengill.
Þjórsárdalur:
Hengill:
Morgunblaðið spotted Game of Thrones filming in Nesjavellir yesterday as well.
"It appears that shooting of the popular tv series, game of thrones, has started close to Nesjavellir today and according to our sources the cast and crew were spotted in Dyrfjöll above Nesjavellir in the sun today."
Also of interest, and a bit of a surprise to me, is that Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) have been spootted in Iceland this week! Both were spotted by Morgunblaðið and by fans who shared photos.
Well we can assume that the Summer shoot in Iceland will be for Arya's and Brienne's arcs, at least in part.
- The mountains and shorelines could make for a nice Maidenpool or Crackclaw Point for Brienne, perhaps even Duskendale. Will we get Ser Hyle Hunt this year?
- I would guess that the Arya scenes will be her travels with/ without Sandor in the Vale of Arryn or maybe the Saltpans. An outside chance some of it could be used for Braavos as well perhaps...
Iceland is just so, so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to find out Gwen and Maisie are in Iceland, but I'm glad it helps to narrow down what will be shot were. To some degree at least!
A little unrelated humor...

I just finished season 3, so it's sad there's like 8 months to go. :(
ReplyDeleteIceland is absolutely beautiful, wish i knew how to pronoun the names,i don't even know where to start!
ReplyDeleteHow tall is Gwendoline Christie?
A long wait indeed! :(
ReplyDeleteGwen is 6-3!!
ReplyDeleteNot as tall as Brienne would be, but this is reality after all. XD
I know what you mean about Icelandic pronunciations... If it helps at all the " Þ" is similar to a "th" if I recall correctly. So Þingvellir is Thingvellir.. or Thing Fields in English. A "Thing" in Icelandic is the same as a "moot" or large social or governing meeting and that location used to hold moots more than a thousand years ago. Making it perfect film location for the upcoming Kingsmoot !
The name of the one site Þjórsárdalur is Thjors-andular. Maybe Thor's something... canyon? Valley?
Maybe some native Icelandic speaker will help out more.
The problem I have with Gwen and Maisie being in Iceland is that Brienne shouldn't be in that area until book 4 and by that time Arya should be long gone from that area. It seems like Brienne's timeline is going to continue to be pushed forward due to the fact that Jamie got back to King's Landing way too early. I really hope they fix the timeline some how to make everything line up probably.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say that from Season 4 on the events from the books will happen, but not necessarily in the same order they happen in the books.
ReplyDeleteI agree though and hope that they are filming Brienne scenes that will be towards the end of the season. It is not too big a chronology shift if she begins her quest in the last few episodes of the season.
Please,if nothing else you gave me a great starting point, thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd YIKES! Gwen must of eaten her Wheaties, every single morsel! Seriously,i knew she was tall but i thought it was the way they film her..wow,nice!
I agree that if briennes there at the end of the season it should be fine.
ReplyDeleteThe timeline in book 4 and 5 is confusing so for some parts it won't matter. Like if things happen faster at the wall than in the erie thats fine. But for brienne and arya its important because brienne very much follows arya and meets the same people. As she has that person who tags along with her and for that to happen the royal wedding has to happen.
i want to go there someday! that place is beautiful
ReplyDeleteGood Stuff!
ReplyDeleteCurious to Maisie and Gwen together, maybe they'll team up? Not having read the books puts me at a disadvantage! xD
ReplyDelete-dalur meens valley and Þjórsá is the name of a river nearby
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Darque. Just cause she's there now doesn't mean that her story will start out from there. They are clearly shooting all the Iceland locations in bulk (shout out to the Production Manager and the ADs for running that ship. The shooting schedule for the show must be a complete clusterfuck with all those locations and that ginormous cast) which would explain why they're both there now.
