Doctor Who - 50th Anniversary Episode to be Simulcast Worldwide

Jul 26, 2013

DOCTOR Who’s 50th anniversary special is to be beamed around the world — at the same time.

Global broadcasters yesterday agreed to the “simulcast” to avoid plot leakage.

The 3D episode goes out here on November 23 and is expected to air at 8pm on BBC1, so fans in LA will watch at noon while it airs in Sydney at 7am the next day.

It has been sold to 200 countries and is expected to reach more than 100 million viewers, making it the biggest-ever global drama simulcast.

  2. I think this has more to do with trying to curb people watching a stream of the BBC working or downloading it hours before it airs in their country then it does about plot leakage. Dr. Who fans for the most part avoid spoilers.

I'm just wondering is it going to air straight thru on BBC America like it does on BBC1 or will there be commercials.

  3. Does that mean no adverts as well? otherwise it will start to lag around the world as the BBC zips through it

  4. Right now my gut says yes and that the stations that normally air commercials will use sponsors instead. I'm sure there are some companies that would pay a decent amount to sponsor the 50th annv episode commercial free.

  5. I don't have the BBCA, so I'll probably still download it. But that's great news!
I wish theaters would show it.

  8. Can't wait, hope I'm back home from my cruise in time for it. 8pm Uk = 3pm Est, if the special is on 3D does anyone know if 3D glasses are being offered to watch it? Cause if you don't have a 3D TV then shooting it in 3D just became pointless for many fans of the show. *there's your budget Moffet*
