#Boss movie will not happen, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht says. #TCAs13 Farhad couldn't make it happen and they didn't want to do without him.

Starz' Chris Albrecht interesting point: If he had picked up a S3 of #Boss, he would have likely had to pick up more seasons to make it...

Boss may be riveting, Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of Mayor Tom Kane may burst with charisma, it doesn't make Lionsgate & Starz want to pursue efforts to conclude this political drama series, or shop the show around (to Netflix?). We knew the show wouldn't get a third season, and now we know all this "talk" of a 2-hour TV movie was a decoy to appease fans, critics, whomever loved the show - AKA all those who watched.
Deep down, we all know that this 'TV movie conclusion for cult favorites' thing never happens.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht was the CEO of HBO when they cancelled Carnivàle, Rome and Deadwood in 2006. Those shows have had TV movie/feature film rumors too.
This is pure bad faith, as Albrecht put all those shows on the air in the first place and he got them to have a few seasons, but still, Boss's cancellation stings.
And Magic City might be next - it certainly follows the same path, having been renewed before season 1 even started to air (to justify the cost of production?) and it still gets incredibly low ratings :
Could be Dead Wrong In Public on this, but having heard TV Exec Speak for years, not getting the renewal vibe on #MagicCity….

So... what about that Party Down feature film ?
Upcoming Starz series include Black Sails (already renewed for season 2...) & Outlander (16 episodes ordered).
Let's hope one day a Starz series will go beyond 2 seasons / 20 episodes - other than their one true hit, Spartacus.
Starz is a mess really, heard they won't be picking up Steven S. DeKnight's Incursion which sounded so awesome and had a female lead. Really now that Spartacus has gone my interest in the channel has as well.
ReplyDeleteI want to have faith in Starz, because out of all the premium channels they have the best movie selection, and some great concepts for TV series but they never last so I never watch them. Ugh. I'll watch that Outlander show though, and Black Sails, and if Da Vinci's Demons isn't canceled after season 2 I'll watch the second season of that.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I can't think of one Starz project I have any interest in. I watched the entire first season of Magic City hoping it would improve but it didn't and I haven't even considered giving season two any of my time and attention.
ReplyDeleteI found Magic City terribly boring gave up after a few episodes and Demons is just plain embarrassing. Shame because Starz could do some interesting things but hasn't really risen the challenge yet.
ReplyDeleteI actually made an exception for Da Vinci's demons. I find it to be a good time-killer if you don't waste time thinking too much about it. It's like a Syfy show with swearing and nudity.
ReplyDeleteStarz is disappointing, it seemed promising at first with the success of Spartacus, but it doesn't seem to have much else after that unfortunately. :(.
ReplyDeleteStarz tv shows get minuscule ratings...
ReplyDeleteI have never truly understood their reasoning for renewing shows before its initial series premiere. Even if the show gets sold to tens, if not hundreds, of countries, I would always wait and see the ratings first if I was a network exec.
ReplyDeleteWhat made Spartacus a success was the compelling story and themes. I'm not catching that with any of the other shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by Magic City, it looks great and touches on some interesting issues with Castro in Cuba and political gerrymandering along with mobsters and whatnot, but I can tell that nobody is watching. It's like it's just running its course.
The only thing I'm getting out of this is that JDM might be available to make an appearance on SPN this season...
ReplyDeleteYes I am that narrow minded...
That and there's barely any buzz around it like there are on other shows.
ReplyDeleteExactly. When I watch, I feel like I'm just waiting for something to happen, but it never really does. Others have bailed long ago.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I definitely feel like not many people are watching.
ReplyDeleteOh crap. I was looking forward to a season 3 of Magic City. How are they going to finish the story with only two episodes remaining? Come on Starz, you're better than this. You seem to come up with great show ideas, great acting, but something along the way isn't keeping viewers entertained. I am looking forward to Black Sails, but I want my Magic City also.
