You can now see who Voted Up your @Disqus comments

Jun 13, 2013

Disqus have just rolled out new little feature that now lets you see who has upvoted your comments.

Simply hover over the Up Vote counter and a little popup will be displayed.

If you want to see a persons profile you can then click on their name.

This will then display their full profile and give you the ability to follow them.

Note: Still no word from Disqus yet about either having the ability to disable down-votes or to see who has down-voted a comment. We'll keep you informed of any progress.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask in the comments below.

78 comments:

  1. Feel free to upvote this comment so you can see how it looks

  2. That's cool. But I think the downvotes should remain anonymous. Or someone may go all Harvey Dent and go after the people who downvoted him/her and downvote all their comments (extreme example but one can't not see the point :P)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Nice feature thank you for the share.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep, I can see both sides of the arguement. Personally I'd like Disqus to give us the option to remove them completely. Failing that at least let the site owners spot and ban the downvoting trolls :)

I hate it. It's no use to me, and just covers comments I'm trying to read. ANNOYING!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Just don't hover over the counter then

    ReplyDelete
  7. This makes no sense AT ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Some sites that use Disqus will send an email when someone comments about one of my comments without me clicking on subscribe via email. How does that work?

    ReplyDelete
  9. rehabber if you have a disqus account you can edit your notifications settings here

    http://disqus.com/dashboard/#account

There is a notifications tab that allows you to control that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks, but it does not seen to work on this site if I don't click on subscribe via email and then I get all comments not just the ones directed to me. Works on political sites great. Wondered what the difference was.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There should be no difference. Drop me an email darkufo@spoilertv.com and we'll try to see why it's not working for you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Okay, this is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  13. i like this feature. I too wish that downvoting didn't exist. It seems some people come in and down vote every comment for no reason.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I know, I've asked @disqus several times about this and they have said they are looking into options. Most of the downvotes comes from just 1 or 2 individuals who have nothing better to do than to downvotes large numbers of comments.

Once we're able to identify them, they will be banned :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah the downvotes are very much troll territory but I do admit that sometimes I have downvoted a comment or two which I've strongly disagreed with and I really didn't want to get into an "discussion" why.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I do like this feature because I would dearly like people to know that I liked their comment and I agree with them without having to have a discussion with them.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'n glad Disqus decided to give us the option to see who gave us a 'like',now all we need it to do away with the down vote...Better yet, leave the down vote option as long as we can see the person who does down vote you, you know will know who is doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Simply voting will cause the popup to appear, and it is annoying as hell. Plus the popup sticks around for way too long, and sometimes doesn't auto-close. It really spoils the whole Disqus experience.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If they got it where we could see who was down voting, there would not be much of it going on. They like living in the shadows. lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ya,that's the point,ha! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. @DarthLocke4 You're officially an STV celebrity now that Andy has used your profile in a screenshot!

On topic: I love this feature, at least you can see who is like-minded.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey @Ricky Terry good to see you over here :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ya, I saw that and I kind of wanted to run away!

J/k. I can be made an example of :P It's cool. (At least my avatar is time of year appropriate)

And besides my doppleganger "the other Laura" is also featured! XD

On one hand I agree the feature is nice to see who might be like minded and could enhance online friendships, but I also agree with others, that if they do this for the down vote, they could produce some extra conflicts.

Personally I have always hated the down vote, because I think it's rude. I think it's more polite to be able to like something or just not give a like at all. On a bad day knowing who hates you, could really rub one the wrong way!

Oh, And welcome back, Rick! XD

    ReplyDelete
  24. I dunno. People are so brazen, I think some will still go out of their way to do it to make a point/game of it! -But maybe I'm wrong and it would eliminate a good chunk of it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would be very happy if it went back to the way it was, with just the up vote. It would end all the grief it caused.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Missed us huh? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Exactly, I like the online friendships that have come to me personally via STV, and DarkUFO. Also I am glad to be back posting on here too. I have been lurking around in my "Absence", but you know me the ever vocal one with strong opinions. I also don't suffer trolls for too long as you know, I am sort of the anti-troll, but I am trying to stay away from that occupation as much as possible. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep! I missed the interaction, but I needed a break for a time. I like this feature though I know disqus is trying its best to curb the global troll epidemic. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, this is so cool. I've always wondered who Voted Up my comments. Very nice feature. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Glad to be "back" I didn't go anywhere, just went radio silent to regroup. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah,i understand,i'm about ready for a break myself. I have a few things to do and two books to read so as soon as this Monsoon stops and the sun comes out i'm outta here for awhile..tho i'll pop in and out! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Although, if the downvotes weren't anonymous anymore it would allow the one who was downvoted to at least address the downvoter and try to form a discussion to come to some common ground rather than just take it. Also it would then spotlight the downvoters who refuse to contribute to the discussion at hand, which would allow the curious commenters who look to see who downvoted that particular comment to ignore their non-contributions in the future if they so please.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So you are getting the remnants of the superstorm I heard about yesterday now huh? I hope y'all are staying high and dry.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And would allow me to ban the downvoting trolls who just downvote everything :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. yeah, geez its been non stop for 6 days now,ive had it! I'm getting a little cranky from this weather! Now watch it stops and the damn cicadas come out by the millions! ha,just my luck! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. That will be sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  37. This might happen if you are mentioned in a comment, or someone replies to one of your comments.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Right, but it does not work on spoilertv. If I have not clicked the sub via email I do not get comments that reply to one of mine. But since this is my favorite tv site I will just make sure to sub when I leave comments. So all is good. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. So now I have to sign out to upvote my comments? Disastrous.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with you and I'm very torn about the " Vote Down" option being removed or remaining. I always very carefully consider "WHY" I vote a post down and I use the feature sparingly. If the Vote Down feature can't be removed it should remain anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I see your point but sometimes in very heated discussions I know that I DON'T want to get into a discussion WHY I disagree and "have it out with the poster" if I voted their comment down. I think that the best is to eliminate the votedown all together rather than have it not be anon.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I absolutely agree with you. I wish that people used the Vote down wisely but if I had the choice I would removed it completely. I definitely don't want people to hound me on the fact that I disliked their comment if I don't want to get into a discussion why you know?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fair enough. I'm just more confrontational I guess. I just feel like there is more integrity in saying that you disagree, and why you do so, in a civil debate point/counterpoint type discussion rather than just anonymously disliking something. I feel like there is a passive-aggressiveness to downvotes, and unlikes. I feel like if you don't like something you should either have the fortitude to say you don't like it, and be prepared to defend your opinion. or just leave it alone altogether. The only reason to downvote is to show the commenter that he/she is disagreed with, but without a reasonable debate then it only serves to make the downvoter feel a false sense of accomplishment, and the commenter gets annoyed.

This is obviously my take on it, and the way I see it, so not necessarily everyone's opinion on the matter, but I invite a civil debate on this point. I also invite anyone who agrees to speak up as well.:)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I totally understand your stance on the issue, because I was once a VERY vocal commenter on here from the early days, and have made quite a few friends on here that have led to friendships elsewhere on the internet as well. But recently in the last year or so there has been an influx of trolls on the internet, and it made me feel rather tedious about my commenting here and elsewhere. I have missed being able to have discussions like this one in particular, where we both have differing views, but are capable of being civil and even friendly about it.

I'd say the optimal situation would be to disable the downvotes if it were possible, and that would basically force someone who disagrees with a given comment to actually put in words that they do so, and thus allow the original commenter to address their concerns, and even possibly be swayed, or sway the other individual, or agree to disagree. Trolls would then have to be out of the closet in order to troll a comment, and that would lead to the comments being moderated.

Have a great day my friend! :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks so much for the great discussion! I found it to be very refreshing :)

You too have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Will do, and I would discuss with you any day of the week. :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Although, if the downvotes weren't anonymous anymore it would allow the one who was downvoted to at least address the downvoter and try to form a discussion to come to some common ground rather than just take it."
As one who has used the "downvote" option sparingly, I only downvote comments that have previously been vigorously debated to the point of near-shouting matches on SpoilerTV and other boards. There are just some contentious elements of tv shows where there never will be common ground.

    ReplyDelete
  48. First choice is definitely removal but it can't be eliminated there are just elements of tv shows where more discussion is without value because the subjects (s) have already been thoroughly debated with no consensus reached, just increasingly vehement arguing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is very true!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree. I would not mind seeing downvoting eliminated entirely, and I use it very infrequently, but when I do use it, it's usually to express disagreement with a comment without wanting it to turn into a big to-do. If I get the sense a commenter is going to make it personal and can't simply discuss the point in question without things getting heated, it's sometimes the better option.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm not sure that would be effective. I worry a person with the time and energy on their hands to troll would simply make a separate account to do so. Some people would get their noses out of joint if someone disagreed with them and go back to retaliate against all their posts. I'd support either eliminating down voting or else keeping it anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I hear what you're saying and I could see that working fine in some instances... but in my case, I use downvoting very sparingly. Like I probably vote 99 posts up for every one I ever vote down. When I do give a down vote, it's usually in an instance where either the point has already been hashed out thoroughly by others ahead of me and I have nothing new to contribute to the discussion, or where I am concerned the commenter may be in too personal a place on the subject and getting into it may cause a fight rather than a discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I see what you're saying, and you're just the kind of person I'm sure I'd enjoy having that discussion with. But, for instances where someone is heavily convinced of a certain pairing or another and are ranting that other characters are useless and must die because they get in the way of Apollo and Starbuck getting together, sometimes that isn't the person who can have a reasonable debate. When they've posted "DEE MUST DIE!!!!" in five different places on the thread just because that character stands in the way of their OTP, sometimes a downvote is a simpler way to convey you disagree without starting a big hoopla.

    ReplyDelete
  54. There are so many "guest" votes even seeing them does not tell you much. I don't mind the down votes, I never go back and look and since most don't comment I never know someone does not like my comments.

    ReplyDelete
  55. A little more than a year ago we didn't have the downvote button, and what a pleasure it was.If a person disagreed we had a discussion or at least we knew why they disagreed. It was civil, and usually polite, and friendly. I personally want that button done away with, but if it has to stay but you could see who down votes you they wouldn't do it as much, and they would be banned anyway.

Lets hope Disqus doesn't take another year to figure out a way to disconnect it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am okay with them taking it away too. That would probably be the easiest solution. Works that way on other sites and is fine.

I'm not sure being able to see who downvoted you would make anything better. The people who want to troll would just make false accounts and continue. Some people might also get butthurt if someone downvoted their post and go back and stalk the person who did it. Happens all the time over on other sites. Just gives the minority of users who take things a little too personally another way to get something stuck in their craw.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I've missed that feature so that's good news.

Re down-voting: I'm fine with it being anonymous or being taken off completely.
