From this list, I went for Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, and Sarah Michelle Gellar but ever since Tatiana Maslany came onto the screen in Orphan Black, I was completely shocked by how never even hearing of her before and how crazy talented she is by playing not 1, not 3, but 7 different personalities. It is insane! If she doesn't win in the Critic's Choice Awards, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with them. I have a feeling in the next few years that Tatiana's name will be everywhere.
I feel like they're someone missing (for me I mean) i picked Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Tina Fey, and Sarah Michelle Geller (oh! the woman who played Fred on Angel) Most of the other names on the list have seen their momentum slow down. Nathan Fillion seems to have gotten bigger. Ms. Ackerman (recalled her last name still not her fires) is working a lot...and seems to have capitalized on her time on Angel.
Not sure who else i would have added on this list, so from those included i went for Steve Carell, Nathan Fillion, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Tatiana Maslany and Jennifer Garner...
It's a kinda subjective question. In the end it's really going to boil down to who do we like the most? In my case Stana Katic because before Castle she always seemed to be the extra with a Russian accept, Nathan Fillion because of his work with Joss Whedon, Amy Acker because her characters Fred on Angel and Kelly Peyton on Alias could not have been more different, Jennifer Garner because I absolutely fell in love with Sydney Bristow, and SMG because she basically made a cult icon.
Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. Maybe Stana mostly, because she's really only broken through in the last years, thanks to Castle and has been rising and rising ever since. Nathan, even before Castle, broke through and started to rise when Firefly happened, but he's gaining more mainstream recognition with Castle. So with those reasons, I had to vote for both in this poll.
Well, since this is my poll, i guess i ought to have an answer. here's the 5 that I would choose: kiefer sutherland- 24 sophia bush- one tree hill nathan fillion- firefly steve carell- the office sarah michelle gellar- buffy
even though i haven't seen buffy, firefly, the office or 24, i acknowledge that all of these actors and actresses are certainly well known and all of them are some of the biggest tv stars currently right now. (i guess i should go ahead and binge watch 24 and the office then... ok, i'll put it on the list, and watch them after i power through veronica mars, friday night lights and bones)...
there have been a few tv stars that i unintentionally left out... here are some of them:
zach braff- scrubs erin karpluk- being erica poppy montgomery- without a trace peter krause- six feet under ginnifer goodwin- big love dule hill- the west wing bryan greenberg- one tree hill lauren graham- gilmore girls eliza dushku- tru calling
this was a very fun poll to create. made me realise how much shows i'm missing out on. now off to prioritise and figure out which shows to binge on in the near future :)
To me a breakout star is a star that succeeded to move from the small screen to the big screen. From this list, the stars that I think did this are Jennifer Garner, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, and Ashton Kutcher. As for the others, I love SMG for example and she did participate in some successful movies, but in the end she got stuck in the same horror\action movies typecast and eventually had to return to TV.
i think i should've broken up this poll into biggest tv stars of the past, biggest tv stars now, and biggest tv stars in the future... ah well.
in 5 years time or so (or maybe even earlier, i think both katie leclerc (daphne vasquez- switched at birth) and tatiana maslany (sarah manning and other clones- orphan black) will both be well known (if they're not already)...both are talented actresses, and both switched at birth and orphan black i'm sure will both be standouts in terms of family drama and sci-fi respectively.
is it really from the small screen to the big screen? are you 100% sure on that? I always thought a breakthrough role for an actor/actress was the role that got them noticed no matter the format (tv or movie). All of these options above are valid in their own right imho... but I could be wrong- I found out the definition of 'breakout role' through wiki lol! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_role
i guess if it has to be anyone from psych i would say maggie lawson hands down. when she was first on the show, everyone kinda saw her as an alicia silverstone look-a-like but over the years, she has really developed and matured as an actress, and has really improved the quality of psych as a whole.
yes, i agree tatiana will be a rising star of the future. i also think (if orphan black does well enough), the show will also be a standout and highlight of the 2010 decade. definitely my favourite new tv show of 2013 so far.
I'm not clear on the definition of "breakout star", but voted for Carell, Fillion and Jennifer Garner. I like them for different roles and they seem to be pretty big in cult and/or mainstream circles. Funny though, that the actress I never heard of is winning. Guess she's only famous for this one show (with Fillion?) but has some die-hard fans. To me though, you'd have to be successful and memorable in more than one role to be considered a star, but to each their own.
Nobody from Lost on this poll? When the show first started Matthew Fox was the only recognizable name but by the time it ended everyone on the show was. Whenever I hear someone from Lost is on a new show or movie I always try to check it out.
I would have loved to see Jamie Foxx listed or Kerry Washington. However, the list is representative of Hollywood and its push for the same actors and faces. Vote for Stana Katic!
I agree with Nathan Fillion being in the top because he's had major roles on, firefly, buffy and castle. However Stana Katic hasn't been major on anything but castle. I don't think one show should qualify you as a TV star, especailly not the top.
Meant to add Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer. Viola went from small roles to starring with Meryl Streep then on to Oscar nominations. Octavia Spencer won an oscar. Where is Jennifer Hudson on this list. she lost American Idol then responded with a role in dream girls to win an oscar, She also won a grammy. Short sighted to say the least in submitting names.
Amy Acker has quite the list of roles and seems to be known pretty well in the sci-fi and supernatural genres.
Guess off the list it would be actors like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ashton Kutcher.
These are names I hear often by people from more than one fandom. To me someone not well known suddenly getting a role and being known by a bunch of groups defines "breakout".
Stana Katic, I wouldn't know her if her character's name wasn't next to her name. She's well known only to the Castle fandom.
I think this used to be the case but since TV has been producing bigger, meatier roles it is not so much the case anymore. Nowadays famous movie people can do to TV and get more acclaim than they did in the movies. A great example of this would be Keifer Sutherland, who was a movie star in the 80's before ever appearing on 24 (making me question his presence on this list since he's been a star for more than 15 years). However 24 made him even bigger than he was in movies.
from the listed, it would have to be Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, as they have achieved success on both the small and big screens... but honestly the biggest breakouts in my mind are the creators behind the scenes... namely Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams
From this list I went for Stana Katic only, but I'm totally shocked not seeing Ben Browder (commander John Crichton from brilliant and genius "FARSCAPE") here... C'mon, he and "FARSCAPE" are ten thousand times better than "Firefly"...
Breakout star of the last 15 years has to be Mariska Hargitay. Prior to landing the role of Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, she was mostly known as the daughter of Jayne Mansfield, and only had some minor roles in various television series. As SVU begins its 15th season this fall, Mariska has become one of the highest paid actresses on television, is beloved by so many people and one of the most inspiring women in the world for what she has accomplished since SVU's debut in 1999.
The only people who really fit the bill for a "breakout star" on this list would be Steve Carell, Nathan Fillion, and Ashton Kutcher. Kiefer Sutherland and Patrick Dempsey don't count because they landed big roles as far back as the eighties, predating the 15 year scope of the poll. The rest aren't big enough or are only known for one or two specific roles.
Obviously all the big actors, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Steve Carrell, Tina Fey and I picked other; Melissa McCarthy who's now a well sought after, big named, box office hit actress who started in Gilmore Girls.
Psych would not be and cannot be Psych without her. She has become a vitally important part of the show yeah she is really beautiful, sweet and quite talented BUT the only role that she has had success with is Juliet O'Hara and that is all she will ever be remembered for. Every other show/role she's had has failed miserably and if the preview i have seen for her new comedy is anything to go by that too will be cancelled after a few episodes as well (she is just playing Juliet with a catchers mitt (the same mannerisms) it's a joke). It's a good thing she is sticking with Psych as well because she going to need it. I do love her and i always have but i am just telling it how i see it. She should not be on this list. I do think however that her real life boyfriend and co-star James Roday should be on the list along with her other co-star Tim Omundson.
People aren't even voting for these actors because of their so called “talent” they voting for them because they are from their favorite show or one half of their favorite ship. What a joke!
are you sure that's what she'll ever be remembered for. that seems a little harsh of a judgement... i still have hope for 'back in the game'. hopefully this comedy is something that will be on abc for some quite time yet. the reason why i placed her in the poll is because for me she was the breakout star out of all the other psych candidates (aside from dule hill which i unintentionally forgot- his breakout role was in the west wing). not sure if people know tim omundson and i guess many people could still recognise maggie lawson because of the alicia silverstone factor. personally, my favourite characters on psych are gus and jules.
i truly agree. stana katic is a breakout star, but i don't think she's 'the' breakout star as the results of this poll suggests. i think if i were to pick one person, it would be sarah michelle gellar.
I would say some people are,you will find that in any poll, but to say 'people' the way you are is implying everyone does that, and that is just not true.
You may think it's harsh and it is, but it's the truth. Maggie is great (bless her) but she doesn't have what it takes to headline a primetime show, especially on ABC where it's very rare that a comedy lasts even a season. Obviously there are exceptions but “Back in The Game” is not going to be one of them. The premise is ridiculous, and has a limited time frame and limited appeal, especially overseas, where baseball just isn't popular. James Caan looks like a hobo and like i said before if i didn't know it was a different show i'd think that i was watching “The secret life of Juliet O'Hara”. I love Maggie, i do but this is just history repeating itself. FYI my favorite character on Psych since she first appeared in episode 2 is also Juliet O'Hara. Also why didn't you include Roday? His work on Psych has been outstanding, not to mention the fact that he writes for the show, directs episodes and is also a producer. He just directed and starred in his own motion picture called “Gravy” (with a great cast) which will be hitting theaters in December, plus he runs his own theatre company and actually directed Maggie in one of their plays a couple of years ago.
I voted for Jennifer Garner, Kerry Russell, Tina Fey, Patrick Dempsey and "Other". Other breakout stars for me would be: Katherine Hegl: Greys Anatomy, Peter Dinklage:Game of Thrones, Zoey Deschanel: New Girl, Michelle Williams: Dawson's Creek, Josh Duhamel: Vegas, Simon Baker: The Mentalist, Sofia Vergara: Modern Family and Mila Kunis: That 70s Show.
Have to go with Tatiana Maslany. Brilliant yet underrated actress.
Everytime someone fangirls about N-Dobrev or some other subpar actor playing "two characters oh my gosh" I can't help but laugh, because Tatiana Maslany is playing FREAKING SEVEN and all seven actually FEEL like different people.
I think a breakout star is just that, someone whose roll broke open a person's career from just another working actor to having a full career and being a well-known star.
5. Kiefer Sutherland Despite his father's fame, Kiefer Sutherland was not a household name for badass until "24". Now he's a icon - because of that show. Fox kept "Touch" on as long as it did because of him. He also was a voice on "The Simpsons" for years, and is the Serg. Voice in "Call of Duty's World at War". Basically, if you want to cast a smart, badass - it's Kiefer Sutherland.
4. Stana Katic She was just another talented working actress, a guest star on shows for years, and then Castle came along. Now she's on magazine covers, one Maxim's hot one hundred, was in one of the best-selling itunes movies ever - the artsy "For Lovers Only" She's The Voice for Lois Lane in the video version of "Superman Unbound" and Talia al Ghul in the "Batman Arkham City" video game. she's also in new "CBGB" film as rock star Genya Ravan, and the arthouse film "Big Sur" which stars Kate Bosworth. It's this mix of projects that lets her walk the line between an indie film starlet and red-carpet hottie.
3. Nathan Fillion While "FireFly" gave Nathan a cult following which is what got him "Castle" and helped the show start off, he wouldn't be the household name that he is now without "Castle". Now he's got two million + twitter followers and is three different mainstream movies, Joss Whedon's "Much To Do About Nothing," the Pixar sequel to Monsters, Inc and The Percy Jackson film franchise.
2. Sarah Michelle Gellar Sarah Michelle Gellar was on a soap opera before Buffy, so if you didn't watch daytime you wouldn't have a clue. Because of Buffy she's regular TV/Movie star who could take time off to have her kid, come back years later and have her name STILL sell a primetime series to greenlight status.
1. Tina Fey She went from being the funny girl on SNL, to the creator/writer/producer/actress of her mega hit show, and a two time Golden Globe winner. However, You know you're a mega star & Hollywood comic genius when you host the Golden Globes and they been beg you to do the Oscars.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Definately Steve Carell. He's a comedy genius. :)
ReplyDeleteFrom this list, I went for Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, and Sarah Michelle Gellar but ever since Tatiana Maslany came onto the screen in Orphan Black, I was completely shocked by how never even hearing of her before and how crazy talented she is by playing not 1, not 3, but 7 different personalities. ReplyDeleteSarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Garner
ReplyDeleteI voted Sarah Michelle Geller, Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau and Kerri Russel.
ReplyDeleteYou mean Amy Acker.
ReplyDeleteIt's a kinda subjective question. In the end it's really going to boil down to who do we like the most? ReplyDeleteYeah I can tell, Tatiana's gonna be one of my fav actresses as the years progress. Already is at the moment.
Keri Russell! Such an amazing TV AND Movie actress... she should have way more votes.
ReplyDeleteThat's my defintion. To each his own.

ReplyDeleteMarcia Cross wasn't really a breakout star when she had been in Melrose Place
ReplyDeleteI think this used to be the case but since TV has been producing bigger, meatier roles it is not so much the case anymore. ReplyDeleteKsenia Solo and Colin Morgan as well.
ReplyDeleteTimothy Olyphant (Deadwood and Justified)

ReplyDeleteUhm, The Librarian? For Lovers Only? Also, you might wanna check what "breakout star" means...
ReplyDeleteKristen Bell - Veronica Mars.
ReplyDeleteStana Katic and Nathan Fillion, and I'm not just saying this because I'm a huge Castle fan. XD
ReplyDeleteYou forgot to add Anna Torv from Fringe!
ReplyDeleteAnna Torv
ReplyDeleteJennifer Garner
Nathan Fillion

ReplyDeleteThe first person who comes to mind when looking at who's missing from the list - Nina Dobrev.
ReplyDeleteGirl can act! Not only does she play two characters brilliantly, but she plays so many different incarnations of each, and off each other!
I think she definitely has an amazing career ahead of her.
You may think it's harsh and it is, but it's the truth. ReplyDeleteTatiana Maslany, Anna Torv and of course John Noble.
ReplyDeleteAndrea Parker, Michael T. Weiss, Ryan Merriman
ReplyDeleteI usually not respond to provokations but in a nice way:

i picked Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell
ReplyDeleteAnna Torv definitely, I thought you of all people would have mentioned John Noble.
ReplyDeleteKiefer Yeah too, I hated him as an actor until 24 came along....
OMG i didn't put his name down!!!! That shall be fixed in a jif, thanks for bringing that to my attention! Whew, dont know how that happened,ha!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of Kiefer either, and after Lost Boys i really didnt care for him,but he redeemed himself in 24

I think a breakout star is just that, someone whose roll broke open a person's career from just another working actor to having a full career and being a well-known star.
ReplyDelete5. Kiefer Sutherland
Despite his father's fame, Kiefer Sutherland was not a household name for badass until "24".
4. Stana Katic
She was just another talented working actress, a guest star on shows for years, and then Castle came along.
3. Nathan Fillion
While "FireFly" gave Nathan a cult following which is what got him "Castle" and helped the show start off, he wouldn't be the household name that he is now without "Castle". Now he's got two million + twitter followers and is three different mainstream movies, Joss Whedon's "Much To Do About Nothing," the Pixar sequel to Monsters, Inc and The Percy Jackson film franchise.
2. Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar was on a soap opera before Buffy, so if you didn't watch daytime you wouldn't have a clue. Because of Buffy she's regular TV/Movie star who could take time off to have her kid, come back years later and have her name STILL sell a primetime series to greenlight status.
1. Tina Fey
She went from being the funny girl on SNL, to the creator/writer/producer/actress of her mega hit show, and a two time Golden Globe winner. However, You know you're a mega star & Hollywood comic genius when you host the Golden Globes and they been beg you to do the Oscars.
I do not Know that How much TV star for doing a Performance in the recent last 15 years?
