The SpoilerGirl's Pilot Scorecard 2013/14 *Updated 4th June*

Jun 4, 2013

Update: 4th June Watched 4 more pilots last night. The Goldbergs, Resurrection, Lucky 7 and The 100. Also re-watched Killer Women, slightly better on 2nd viewing.

Update: 3rd June Had a chance to watch a few more Pilots (The Night Shift, Believe). I also watched a Crisis again and downgraded it, sorry.

I've recently had the privilege of having access to large number of pilots and new shows for the upcoming season. A lot of these were not final production version but were more than enough to allow me to decide if I liked them or not.

Now, obviously TV is very very very subjective, especially in comedy, so please bare that in mind when reviewing my chart below.

I've tried to keep it simple with a basic ratings system:

"Loved It" (green) ie can't wait to watch the next episode
"Still unsure" (yellow) ie shows promise and I'll probably catch a few more episode to make my mind up
"Junk" (red) ie totally hated it and won't bother checking out any more episodes.
"Not Yet Seen" (white) fairly obvious duh!

I hope to watch the remaining ones soon and I will update this post and table as and when I do.

So which ones are you looking forward to? Tell me in the comment section below.

  1. good to see a lot of fox shows get the 'green light'. thanks sharon for doing this. now i guess i can prioritise now...

btw, which shows do you all think will be renewed for season 2 this time next year? considering only seven drama shows were renewed for season 2 this season past (revolution, elementary, B&theB, the carrie diaries, nashville, the following, arrow), here's what i think will be renewed come may next year:

    almost human
    crisis
    agents of shield
    OUAT in wonderland
    the blacklist
    the tomorrow people
    the 100
    mind games

as for comedies, i'm not really sure. after what happened with go on (i really wanted this show to get a second season), and if only 2 new comedy shows are going to be renewed for next year, my money's on the crazy ones and the michael j fox show.

not sure about gang related because it's going to premiere spring/summer 2014 and it may be a summer show from the outset... if so, then it's a good thing they've announced it from the bat and this time, there is hope that gang related could get renewed for season 2...

i'm still going to check out rake though, even though it is in 'red', i'm still gonna watch it- greg kinnear is a great actor.

  2. I've seen The Tomorrow People and it's awesome. It's the only pilot I was actually interested in. Other pilots just look rubbish. Compared to some of the stuff that came in last year (2012-13), it's not good.

  3. It's a pleasure @Jonathan

I'm terrible at predicting renew/cancellations. Some really bad comedies go on for years whilst good drama/sci-fi gets cancelled. I'll never understand the viewing habits in America.

From your list I think Mind Games might struggle if it does not get good early promotion and good pilot ratings. Crisis may also be in the same boat.

The others, based on the Pilots I think are good shows.

Comedies are even harder to predict. Very taste and talent orientated. I find Two and a Half men totally unfunny yet it has huge ratings.

Rake was a big disappointment. I hope you enjoy it more than I did

  4. Any chances we could see your scorecard for the previous years too? Since TV is very subjective, it will help me to see if last year we were on the same page too.
Also, could you add The Originals to the list and what you thought of it?
All pilots I want to check are in green in your list, and that is reassuring, except for Intelligence.
What was it about Intelligence that made it 'still unsure' for you?

  5. I agree, TTP is the strongest of the CW lineup. The Blacklist and Agents of Shield are very good.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The Blacklist looks pretty similar to The Following, which I'm not really interested in. Agents of Shield doesn't appeal to me at all. Everyone has different views though.

  7. yeah, i also don't like those type of comedies- anything with a laugh track is a big no-no for me.

but yeah, mind games for me does seem the most shaky out of what i predicted to be renewed. but i still think it has a good chance- it has the christian slater and steve zahn factor, plus the creation of the show from kyle killen (who created awake before).

i really hope mjf succeeds for michael j fox's sake at least. i do love me some robin williams comedic humour but i'm not sure if a 60 something year old man can draw in viewers week in and week out and do well in the 18-49 demos... ah well, it's up against sean saves the world (i think that show is DOA) so i guess cbs did that scheduling correct then...

most of the good shows that i want to see are in the midseason anyway- the 100, rake, gang related, intelligence, believe, crisis, mind games and resurrection. so it's only 5 new dramas (almost human, the tomorrow people, the blacklist, agents of shield and OUAT in wonderland) in september/october

  8. Thanks for doing this! Nice to see that most of the shows I'm waiting for have a green light from you ;)

  9. MJF was surprisingly good. Crazy Ones I think will become tired. I love RW and SMJ but something just did not sit right.

and yes laugh tracks should be banned.

  10. Hi.

This is the first time I've done this.

FYI: My Favourite shows in the past have been Fringe, Lost, Person of Interest, early Bones, Castle, OUAT, Psych, Dexter, Homeland, AHS, The Killing, Walking Dead, Arrow, Justified , The Americans plus a lot of others I watch>

The pilot for the originals has already technically aired. They are filming a new one for the full series so that won't be released anytime soon.

Intelligence was ok, I love Holloway and Megan but the concept is pretty dumb and I think it's novalty will soon wear off. I really need to see more episodes to make a full decision. It certainly did not jump out as must watch like other pilots (LOST) have done in the past.

  11. Had fun doing it !

Any shows that I've not watched yet that you're interested in? I'll try to do them next week if I get time.

    ReplyDelete
  12. yeah i know, i just can't stand laugh tracks too. dunno what people see in shows like HIMYM, 2 and a half men and TBBT...

i still have hope for the crazy ones...maybe the series can prove the doubters wrong...

glad that 'back in the game' was in green. many people on other news article sites were writing that show off from the outset... personally, i think it's a good refreshing comedy family show from the previews. really hope that show suceeds- love maggie lawson from psych.

btw, do you just watch new fall tv screeners or summer new tv show screeners as well... because i'd really like to see a section on this site (similar to this post) that has green/yellow/red for new summer shows coming each year. that would be good. i'm definitely looking forward to under the dome, as well as twisted and graceland. will take a look at camp, the bridge, the fosters and king and maxwell.

  13. I think Believe is the one that stands out the most from the rest. Also the 100, but I'm actually gonna watch that one myself;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. You didn't make it easy for the colorblind :( This chart is basically just teasing me, as I was only interested in seeing what shows you put on the green light. I cannot see the difference between green and yellow. Next time, I suggest you use colors with much more contrast between them. After all, I am not the only colorblind out there in the world. I was really looking forward to reading this once I saw the title, but I have no way of doing it now :(

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hope you enjoy the 100. I will be checking out Believe soon. I think that's the one where the kid comes back alive after being dead for years?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Blacklist is a lot more interesting than the following. I enjoyed the following a lot but it's quite a different feel.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't have access to FX shows I believe. I know that the spoilertv team do get some screeners from FX eg Americans, Justified etc so hopefully they will send screeners to them and they can get one of their writers to write a preview.

if I do get to see any others I'll update the table.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hmm. I may give some others a try but TTP is the only one that I picked out straight away as being good.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that one is "Resurrection" on ABC. "Believe" is the one with the girl with powers, and scientists and other people are after her.

    ReplyDelete
  20. believe actually sounds very familiar. didn't fox do a show like that called 'touch'? and doesn't 'resurrection' sound like the 4400? really hope those two shows do good but i'm sure those comparisons will definitely be made every time people watch both shows.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Pretty much what i expected it would be

    ReplyDelete
  22. shocked to see star crossed and reign in the red.is this the show the talked abt game of thornes burnoff .but i am quite interested in hostages .i dont know why the have to make intelligence tv series when the already have person of interest.this is gonna kill either one of the show.good to see batb getting season 2 AFTER ALL the hatred.

  24. So jealous that you've seen all these already! I'm massively looking forward to TTP, SHIELD, OUAT in Wonderland, Intelligence, Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow. So happy that all but Intelligence were green :D I'm sure I'll enjoy Intelligence anyway, don't mind the concept enough to overpower my Josh Holloway crush :P Thanks for this!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thank you so much! :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. Most of the shows i want to watch are green, great :) but Reign is red :/ was it really that bad?

    ReplyDelete
  27. does anybody know if some of these pilots premiere this year all do all premiere next year?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks :) I love many of the shows you mentioned too. Thanks for explaining about Inteligence too. I want to check it more because of the cast and less because of its premise.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think there are many original ideas left anymore, and even if the idea is similar, it's execution will differentiate between the shows.

    ReplyDelete
  30. These will debut Fall 2013 and the mid season replacements in early 2014.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think @JoshuaAndre21 is right and you mean "Resurrection". I'm actually willing to give this one a shot, but I'm more interested in NBC's Believe and the little girl with some powers.
BTW, do you have a favorite pilot episode from the ones you've already seen? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Seems we have similar taste in shows,so i am very happy with your hit and misses!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for doing this Sharon.
some of the reds are kinda surprising, The Millers and Super Fun Night for example. From the promos, The Millers looked promising, and there has been a lot of hype about Super Fun Night.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Most of these are in the fall schedule, while the remaining are midseason replacements.
