Star-Crossed - Pilot Screener Preview

Jun 10, 2013

Here's my 2 cents after watching the screener for the CW's Star-Crossed pilot:

First Thoughts:
Star-Crossed seems like a good fit for the CW, the human alien romance doesn’t really break any new ground but was more entertaining than I expected (though my expectations were pretty low).

Theme:
The major theme of the show is how human society treats the aliens very obviously a social commentary on bullying and discrimination against minorities; the aliens aren't particularly alien either with very human appearances.

Romance:
The human-alien romance is at the center and there is excellent chemistry between the two leads (Aimee Teagarden and Matt Lanter) and while the show will probably resort to the usual love triangles there is no believable chemistry between Aimee Teagarden and the human males and the show would do well to avoid a central love triangle.

Characters:
The alien characters are generally more intriguing than the human ones who are mostly completely forgettable and unsympathetic besides Malase Jow’s cancer suffering Julia but there are no real standout supporting characters, Matt Lanter gives a good performance as the male lead and his character is likely to be loved by female viewers and should be the focus of the show rather than Aimee Teagarden who does decently but feels somewhat passive for a lead character.

Overall feel:
After the very sci-fi start to the pilot the high school setting takes over giving it more of a teen drama feel, the show is overall much lighter than the Vampire Diaries but would be a good fit to pair with it should Reign fail. It could also pair well with Beauty & the Beast.

  1. I like your objective, right-to-the-point overview of the pilot, Tariq. According to your review, everything in the pilot seems to be what I expected:
    - Too much teen angst and not enough sci-fi
    - Aimee Teegarden seems to be a wishy-washy lead
    - The human characters are afterthoughts except for Malese Jow

I'm surprised to read the favorable review given to Matt Lanter. I wasn't expecting much. Simply out of morbid curiosity I'll probably check this out when The CW airs it but I'm not expecting to stick with it.

  2. hmm i'll check out the pilot, and probably the second episode to see the quality of the show.
cast + teen angst romance + awful promos + weird face tattoo on aliens + using sci fi just for the sake of having something different than a teen drama + the title itself + your review = my very low expectations of the show. But in any case u never know until u actually see it!

  3. Couid you get Shenae Grimes as the lead actress lot fans might watch it if she was in the role they had good chemistry on 90210 was one of the best couple on that show

  4. I'm going to give this one a pass. The CW has good shows that all focus way too much on star-crossed lovers anyway so a show with that in the title is a bit of a turn-off. Sounds sappier than Roswell. If it was a teen drama that mostly centered on the drama and politics of being an alien teen stuck with human teens...that could be good. And they might deal with that a little but I feel like every cool theme they will have available to them will be sacrificed and not given attention for sake of the romantic dramatic tension.

Too much of that on Vampire Diaries lately!

  5. The only reason I'll be checking this out is for Malese. It's not really my style of show, but who knows, maybe I'll like it
