Wow already? I mean I know June is practically over already, and we're just starting July soon, but come on, to tease us this early when it's not even late July is just too much. :(
I know CBS has positioned POI to grow a lot next season, but I'm actually a little worried. I'm glad that POI already has plenty of ratings and viewers to sustain success already. I'm worried because of all the NSA stuff that has recently come out. You know, all the tracking of phone calls and whatever else they've been doing. And, they're using it to stop terrorist attacks no less, at least so they claim. Sounding familiar? POI is very close to reality. It practically is reality. I'm worried that some of the new viewers next season might get creeped/freaked out at how close to reality the show is and not want to watch it because of that. I'm not really worried about all of us current viewers, just the new ones. Of course, it's also possible that by late September all of this will have blown over and people might not freak out so much. But who knows. This is just something that I've thought about.
It took you until the recent news that just came out this Summer to realize that stuff like this actually happens? Well of course POI is reality! Where else did you think the writers got their inspiration from? Asides from the constant surveillance that's been around in London for decades, this show is a clear reflection as well as the reality of living in a post 9/11 world buddy. Did you really think that hypocrite Obama would really shut down the Patriot Act programs that Bush started, and he so staunchly criticized? What's been exposed on the news recently is nothing new. Why else do you also think as Michael Emerson has mentioned in interviews that what's interesting about this show is that it isn't based so much on Science Fiction, but in actual reality.
Ok whoa whoa settle down. I know POI has always been a reality in the aspect of cameras and surveillance. That's one of the things that I liked about it in the first place because I'm a tech guy. The sci-fi and unreal part is the Machine. I don't mean any disrespect from this, but you sound like my mom in the way of how you criticize Obama. Don't get me wrong, I don't like him and she really hates him. My point from that is that I don't pay much attention to politics, not because I'm totally disinterested, but because my parents make me sick of the subject by listening to all the radio talk shows every day and every night. So, if it has been going on for a while then I might not be aware of it. However, I have been aware for a while of the tracking that many of the internet companies like Google have been doing to users. Also, even though the more attentive people like you might have known about it for a while now, I doubt the masses knew about it until the NSA scandal started. I think most people who already watch the show probably know just how close to reality it is, and yet they still watch it, which is why I'm not worried about those viewers. But additional viewers seeing POI for the first time this fall might feel a little differently. Of course, the funny thing is that the government has apparently been able to track and sort through all the data without the help of a machine, making the basic concept of POI a full reality without the help of the computer. Also, I never intended or wanted to start a political debate with that comment and I still don't want to. I have enough of that to deal with already in my house and within my family. I had actually originally included that above statement in the first comment but I edited it out before posting it because this is a TV site, not a political site, and I was hoping because of that no one would go there. I hope I explained myself and where I was coming from.
I still don't see your point about new viewers being uncomfortable watching this show in the Fall of 2013, even if they're ignorant enough to not realize until now that what has been "exposed in the news about the NSA" is so close to reality. Because since it already is reality in many ways, there's not much they can do about but keep on living their lives. So I don't see why they would have a real problem. And besides, it's not like they don't already have their a very large and strong fan-base with millions of viewers per week. So I don't really see what the worry is all about.
My worries are based on the fact that's a TV show vs real life. Most TV shows have an element of escapism or fantasy, etc. in them. But POI is literally real life, and not only that, but it's right in front of peoples' faces. I would say that the Machine is the element of fantasy, but the government has taken care of that. Most people aren't used to shows being as real as that. Sure, a lot of shows come quite close, like CSI. CSI is real life, depending on where you live I suppose because some cities are safer than others and therefore some people see more of that kind of thing than other people. But they aren't real life and right in front of your face. What I'm trying to say is that when people watch TV, I'm not sure if they expect something as real as something that is currently in the news to come at them. For clarification I should mention here that I'm not counting reality shows as real. After all, they might be called that, but they're not actually real. I guess you could call it a shock factor. It might be too real. I'm not sure if it will effect the ratings at all, and hopefully it won't. It's just an interesting thought that I had.
As for the strong fan base and millions of viewers, I agree completely there. That's why I don't understand why people are still angry that they changed the time slot. Especially with the huge potential of the long-term gains in viewers with having the two NCIS's as lead-ins. I'm all for the time slot change and think that it's a very smart move.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
The wait until September 24 just got longer
